Examinations are synonymous with the education world.

Life today has become so complex that examinations have come to play an important role in ones education career. Examinations are considered so important that most students are afraid of them. No doubt that examinations have their own cons but the pros are far outnumbered them. First and foremost, the ability to pass an examination is indeed a valuable quality. It shows that the students are able to express his thoughts and ideas to a manner others can understand. It also shows students have acquired a certain amount of knowledge in some branches of study. Besides, a mind of a student, even he is a dull, receives good exercise when he prepares for examination. A students success is an examination, therefore, helps employers and others to assess his mental or general ability. Furthermore, examinations also help us have some ideas about a persons knowledge of certain subjects. For example, if a boy has passed the Primary Six Examination, we can at once know how much knowledge he has. Some goes to a university graduate who passes his exams with flying colours. Accordingly, we can have some ideas on his capability and what kind of work he can do. This is why most employers want to know what examinations a person had passed before he is given any job. Employers need to be sure that their employees are at par with standards of company. Some people, however, argue that examinations test only a certain kind of skills. They say that many people have a good memory and special ability to pass examinations and achieve brilliant results, though they have no capacity for original thought or imaginations. But it should be realised that today the syllabuses are so extensive that a student cannot expect to pass an examination by relying entirely on his memory. The students of today must not only have fair knowledge of the subject matter but also be able to show his intelligence and power of reasoning especially, if he is sitting for a higher level examination. Therefore, students ability to pass an examination must indicate some of his mental powers as well as his grasp of the subject he has studied. Moreover, examinations are essential because they compel students to learn. Without them, students would not learn. So they would know very little about the world. They would only learn subjects in which they are interested in and ignore the other subjects which are thought to be difficult, though they are very important in the modern age. If there were no examinations, most students would have been less informed then they are today. Examinations compel students to read as much as they can, and as they do so, they absorb knowledge unconsciously. Furthermore, because of examinations, teachers have to confine themselves to the syllabuses which are aimed at imparting knowledge in systematic manner, and thus developing mental discipline. Based on the reasons mentioned above, it is clear that examinations are important in academic studies and should not be abolished. Those examinations are imperative to teachers, parents and most importantly, students themselves. Last but not least, if we do not hope to see our educational level to drop in a sudden in the future, we should not abolish examinations.
