Happy Holidays from College Drive Dental!

It is December again; hard to believe that another year has passed and a new one is right around the corner. It seems that the months fly by in a blink. Work, school, and other responsibilities keep most of us hopping. Stress and anxiety can be a constant companion. It is our hope that all of you may slow down, relax, and enjoy the holiday season. May it be a peaceful, happy time shared with loved ones.
Celebrate the happiness that friends are always giving. Make every day a holiday and celebrate just living!

MY BABY BUMP
Our patients, Mary and Keith Vacey, have opened their own business. My Baby Bump 3D & 4D Ultrasounds, Ltd., officially opened in Orland Park on Sept. 1, 2012, and offers the most advanced, nonmedical ultrasound images of an unborn baby in the womb. My Baby Bump allows expectant parents the opportunity to see their child in 3D or 4D before birth. Mary Vacey has been a registered ultrasound technician since 1983. She always enjoyed sharing in the experience of a mother seeing her unborn baby during a medical ultrasound exam. Mary realized that the experience could be enjoyed by other family members as well, and the idea for My Baby Bump was born. The father, grandparents, and siblings are welcome to share in the excitement and anticipation of the arrival of a new family member. Keith Vacey, who acts as the receptionist at the office, says that he regularly hears squeals of Its a boy! or Shes so cute! while in the waiting room. It is a priceless opportunity to see a child and allows for bonding before birth. My Baby Bump even offers CDs and DVDs of the baby to share with others. Gift certificates make great shower gifts! Mary and Keith are excited to share their new business with expectant parents and their families. They encourage people to check out their website, www.mybabybump3d4dultrasound.com, for a complete explanation of their services. They can also be reached at (708) 590-6473 for questions or to schedule an appointment. Mary and Keith, we wish you the best of luck in this new business endeavor!

Marilyn Dabischs
talented hobby
Our patient, Marilyn Dabisch, has a hobby that is both fun and charitable. Marilyn has been sewing, doing needlepoint, and counting crossstitch for about 50 years. It is a hobby that she does in her free time, making gifts for family members and close friends. Marilyn takes part in a womens craft group, however, for a few hours every Tuesday. The ladies make crafts and donate the proceeds from craft shows to their church, Salem United Church of Christ, in Oak Lawn, Ill. Marilyn has been meeting with the church group for about 30 years. She says that there were more women years ago, but there are about eight members remaining. They enjoy the companionship they share while doing the crafts they love. One woman makes jewelry, while others make scarves or crochet baby afghans. Marilyns specialties are sewing Christmas stockings, ornaments, tree skirts, and wall hangings. They are made of felt and all pieces are hand-sewn, with sewn-on sparkly, decorative sequins. These beautiful works of art are quite elaborate and are a labor of love for Marilyn. She has made Christmas stockings for each of her five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She states that one stocking could take her a couple of months to finish. Because of the time and work involved, she has never sold her artwork in order to make a profit, she has simply done it to bless her loved ones with a gift made from her hands. The items that she makes on Tuesdays with her church group are made for the benefit of her church. Marilyn has a true gift and talent that she shares with others, while enjoying a pastime that provides entertainment and fun.

EXPLANATION OF OUR BILLING STATEMENTS

Occasionally we receive questions regarding our billing statements, so we thought we would take this opportunity to clarify some of the most common questions. The amount billed ages based on the date the procedure was performed. For example, over 30 days reflects unpaid services (insurance or patient payments) that are now over 30 days old from the date you received treatment. It does not always mean the account is overdue, and it is not a late fee. Balance forward is the amount of money that is still owed from the previous month. It does not correlate with a particular service, but a general balance from the previous month that remains unpaid from either the insurance or the patient. The previous balance plus any new charges, and minus any payments received (insurance or patient), make up the new total balance.

IF YOU HAVE INSURANCE

The little star next to a procedure indicates that dental insurance has been billed. You may receive a bill while we are waiting for an insurance payment if your balance due is greater than the insurance claim for which we are awaiting payment. Many times you will not receive a statement from us until your insurance is paid.

LASTLY
We encourage all of our patients to pay for the services rendered on the day you receive services at our office. This saves us from having to send statements to you. This enables us to keep our fees lower, and it saves you the time it takes to read and pay the billing statement. Best of all, it saves paper, which saves trees and energy. If you ever have any questions about your bill, please do not hesitate to call our office at (708) 361-4626 for clarification. Thank you!

Try this recipe with nearly any winter squash, as well as sweet potatoes.
FOR THE SQUASH: 3 lb. butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and diced 3 T. olive oil Salt and pepper 1 4 cup heavy cream 2 T. unsalted butter 1 t. ground cinnamon 1 2 t. ground nutmeg 1 4 t. ground ginger FOR THE MARSHMALLOW MERINGUE: 4 egg whites 1 jar marshmallow crme (7 oz.) Chopped, toasted pecans

Preheat oven to 375F. Toss squash with oil, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Transfer squash to baking sheet; roast until fork-tender, 2530 minutes. Pure half the squash in a food processor until smooth. Mash remaining squash in a bowl until chunky. Stir pured squash into mashed squash until combined. Heat cream with butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger in small saucepan until butter melts and mixture begins to steam. Stir cream mixture into squash. Transfer squash to a 2-quart ovenproof baking dish. Increase oven temperature to 425F. Whip egg whites for meringue in a clean, dry bowl with hand mixer on medium speed until soft peaks form, 12 minutes. Gradually add marshmallow crme, beating until stiff peaks form and meringue is glossy, 45 minutes more. Spoon mounds of meringue on top of hot squash, starting at the edges and spreading to the center. Bake squash until meringue peaks are golden, 45 minutes. Sprinkle pecans onto meringue and serve immediately. Makes 8 servings.
