    ABOUT THIS GUIDE The following questions are intended to enhance your groups reading of BURNING EMERALD.

    Discussion Questions
    1. The story is told through an outspoken character. Does the narrative voice enhance or detract from the story? 2. Samara deals with a lot of difcult moments at home and in school. Are there situations in her life you can identify with? If so, how? 3. Though overprotective, Samaras mom tries to support her daughter. If you were in the same situation, would you trust your parents with that secret? 4. Being a Cambion takes a great deal of responsibility, and theres a constant challenge to maintain ones humanity. How do you think you would handle it? 5. Samara made several choices that had moral implications. Would you have made the same decisions? Why? Why not? 6. Samara and Caleb share an empathic link where they can sense each others emotions. What would you do if you shared a similar connection with someone? 7. Lilith and Capone have personalities of their own. If you had a sentient being, how would you think he/she would behave?

    8. Tobias has the ability to turn into any human he sees. Who would you turn into? Would you use that power for good or evil? 9. Samaras book, Shh, is mentioned several times. What is its symbolic signicance? 10. Caleb, Samara, and Tobias have an unusual dynamic. Would you consider it a love triangle? If so, how is their relationship different from other love triangles? 11. Life and death is an ongoing theme in the story and they affect the characters in different ways: grief, insanity, depression, revenge. Are the reactions justied? Do they make the characters more sympathetic? 12. Tobias referred to Cambions as demon mutts, establishing a type of classist view regarding his kind. How is this idea relevant in the real world? 13. If irony really had a color, what shade would it be?
