Awards for the fifth annual Scarecrow Contest, in which Belleville area residents and merchants are invited to decorate a scarecrow that adorns Main Street for a few weeks, were handed out to contest winners at the Nov. 5 Belleville City Council meeting. The award for the best entry among families or individuals went to youngsters Maddie and Luke Lieb, although only Luke was able to be at the meeting.

The award for youth groups was given to several students from Savage Elementary School, as their principal Kelley Villa watched proudly from the back of the council meeting room. The award for adult groups was claimed by several members of the Belleville Garden Club, while Klean Dirt Cleaning Services placed first among local businesses. Among items of general business, council members unanimously authorized DPW Director Keith Boc to solicit bids to line sanitary sewer pipes on Maun Street from Denton Road to South Huron River Drive, and the alleyway along South

expanded this year with workshops, entertainment and displays of students projects. Stefanie Halliday, Belleville High School media specialist and chairwoman of the book fair, said a pair of afternoon and evening sessions will showcase the new building and spotlight how students are applying the educational lessons theyre learning.

Were very excited about it, she said about turning the book fair into a community event. We thought what a good opportunity when we know people want to come in and look at the place and see whats happening and see what kids are doing. ... Were going to have a lot of student projects on display, she added, things like videos the kids

have done or web-based projects they have done. Beyond a glimpse at students creativity, the events evening session (5:30-8:30 p.m.) will feature performances by the high school jazz band, school store sales and information from community organizations such as the Belleville
