VFW SHEBOYGAN MEMORIAL POST #9156 NEWSLETTER

Nov/Dec 2012

Commanders Comments

Well it is that time again. Time runs fast. You make plans to get all the reports in and you again find yourself out of time. The fall season is here and it is time to plan your annual trip to the VFW for Santa. Dont forget to look for the dates in the RAMBLIN ON. A lot of things are going on at the post in our canteen. It is the time of year to plan Christmas and New Years. Couple other things going on are: Nov 12th we are having a live remote radio broadcast at the post. I am trying to get and have already gotten different vet organizations to come down that day and put out some info for all the vets in the area. The only way you will get the info is if you show up. The county service office, vets court, WDVA, our honor guard and hopefully the ladies will join in to. That is just some off the groups that have responded back and said they would come down and put out info and field questions you might have. Well that being said, we are at around 87% on membership and still have a couple to go to get everyone paid up. We hit 100% last year and received a streamer for our post colors flag lets see if we can do this again. If you are having problems paying your dues, get hold of me or Wayne Kiley, our quartermaster, and we can help you out. One thing that came out of our meeting at state was that next year the continuous membership will go up $10.00 per membership. So you might want to see if you can get the life membership they offer. Monthly payments on them at affordable rates. We had our annual chicken roast this month and for the first time we ran out of food. Dont know if the weather had anything to do with it or not but it was a very big success. I would like to thank all the people that gave up part of their day to help with the task at hand that day. We are trying to get the post back to things we can do as a family unit again. If you have any ideas please fill out a suggestion card the next time youre at the post and drop it in the box. These are looked at by the board committee and discussed whether they will be able to be implemented or not. Dont forget about the scholarship programs that we offer the deadlines are getting close. Call me for the info and I will get all the info out to you. I would like to apologize for my lack of attendance at the post. I am pulling double duty again as district commander and post commander and I am putting in 6 days a week at work on third shift and schooling two days a week. I will try to make it to the post but dont always have the time. Next year they will get a new commander at district so I will have more time on my hands. If I am elected again you will see more of me. Well, I think I covered everything, if I missed anything keep an eye out for the RAMBLIN ON and check out the calendar of events. Remember, we have state calendars available for purchase. There are 356 chances for everyone to win, three picks a day. Yours in comradeship, Post commander Jeffery Cummings. jsausagelinks@yahoo.com 920-287-8711

AN IRISH BLESSING His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day, while trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby bog. He dropped his tools and ran to the bog. There, mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what could have been a slow and terrifying death. The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman's sparse surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved. 'I want to repay you,' said the nobleman. 'You saved my son's life.' 'No, I can't accept payment for what I did,' the Scottish farmer replied, waving off the offer. At that moment, the farmer's own son came to the door of the family hovel. 'Is that your son?' the nobleman asked. 'Yes,' the farmer replied proudly. 'I'll make you a deal. Let me provide him with the level of education my own son will enjoy. If the lad is anything like his father, he'll no doubt grow to be a man we both will be proud of.' And that he did. Farmer Fleming's son attended the very best schools and in time, graduated from St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become known throughout the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin. Years afterward, the same nobleman's son who was saved from the bog was stricken with pneumonia. What saved his life this time? Penicillin. The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill. His son's name? Sir Winston Churchill.
