The Mt. Laurel Sun
The holidays are here, bringing
along aromas of cinnamon and ginger-
bread, stores packed to the brim with
avid shoppers and plenty of local
events to make this season count.
So, where to begin?
A special visit
Santa Claus is taking a break from
busily preparing for the holidays to
make a pit stop in Mt. Laurel.
This will be an outing before his
main visit on Christmas Eve, of
course.
Arriving grandly on a fire truck,
residents can meet with Santa

T
he holiday season has arrived.
And that means that many
good-hearted people and organ-
izations will be gathering food, cloth-
ing, toys, money and other items for
those less fortunate.
At The Sun, we want to help make
your event as successful as possible.
But to do that, we need your help.
Many retailers count on Black Fri-
day to help put their business in the
black for the year. If holiday sales are
strong, they have a good overall year. If
sales are soft, they struggle to get by.
The same theory can hold true for
nonprofits and other groups that de-
pend on the publics generosity during
the holiday season to see them through
the rest of the year. People, naturally,
are more giving during this time of the
year. So, in the coming weeks, youll
see bell-ringers, donation drives and a
lot of other efforts to help those in
need.
We salute everyone who holds a
drive to help those in need. But we also
want to help make those efforts as
grand and successful as possible.
To do that, we need to know about
your event well in advance (at least two
weeks is best). We need to know what
types of items you are trying to collect,
who will benefit from the drive, and,
most importantly, how people can get
involved to help you.
Email is the best way to send us this
information, and youll find our news
email address throughout this paper.
Then, after we get your information,
well take it from there. Well get it into
the paper and let everyone in town
know what it is you are trying to ac-
complish and how they can be a part of
it.
The recent storm has made giving
this year more important than ever.
Many families are still struggling with
the economy. There always are people
in need.
Let us help you to help them. Send
us your event information and lets
make this a big donation year.
in our opinion
Holiday helpers
Its the season to help others; let us know about your fundraiser or drive
The need is there
From devastating storms to an econo-
my that still isnt humming along, the
need for donations this holiday period
is strong. Tell us about your fundraising
effort or donation drive, and well tell
everyone else.
Nickelodeon films at Paulsdale
By KATHLEEN DUFFY
The Mt. Laurel Sun
A few local teenagers who are involved
in the Alice Paul Institutes Girls Advisory
Council (GAC) will be gracing national tel-
evision sets next March on Nickelodeon.
The segment will be part of a feature
honoring Womens History Month.
Kiersten, Keyanna, and I are going to
be on Nickelodeon's Nick News in March!
wrote GAC member Devon Hartsough in a
blog post last month. The episode will
focus on womens rights, and we were
asked to appear on the show to talk our ex-
perience lobbying Congress in Washing-
ton, D.C.
In our interviews, we spoke about the
history of the Equal Rights Amendment
and what it would change, if passed. It was
an amazing experience, and we are very
thankful that Nick News allowed us to
share our story with others, she contin-
ued.
Hartsough is a 16-year-old Mt. Laurel
resident and a junior at Lenape High
School.
For Alice Paul Program Associate Sarah
Bear, the experience was a new one.
It was really exciting, Bear said, ex-
plaining that she had never before wit-
nessed the behind-the-scenes action that
goes into creating a TV episode.
Nickelodeon, she said, reached out to the
girls, based on their involvement in
womens rights issues.
The filming took place on Saturday, Oct.
27, Bear said, and the exact release date has
yet to be determined.
Its really cool to know what we did and
our message is going to get out to young
girls, said GAC member 17-year-old
Burlington resident Keyanna Wig-
glesworth, who is currently in her fresh-
man year at Harvard University.
GAC is involved in several events
throughout the year, ranging from partici-
pation in a national press conference in
Washington, D.C., to helping with daycare
on Womens Equality Day and baking
cookies for next months Holiday Open

ment.
An employee of DeSimone
BMW, 1220 Route 73, reported that
tools valued at $350 were stolen
from a work truck that was

on Nov. 6 and 7:30 a.m. on Nov. 7.
A padlock was cut off of a toolbox
to gain access to the tools.
A resident of the 400 block of
Equality Court reported that his

While in Washington, D.C., last
March, the girls met with Con-
gressman Jon Runyan and shared
their appreciation for his spon-
soring of the Congressional Gold
Medal Act for Alice Paul and to
speak about the importance of
the Equal Rights Amendment, ac-
cording to a release.
Its really great that were
being recognized for our support
of the Equal Rights Amendment
on national TV, said 17-year-old
Mt. Laurel resident Kiersten
Campbell, who is a senior at
Lenape, in a statement.
Members range in age from 13
to 17 and are in high school.
Recently, the group began a
blogging project. It will run for a
year and discuss issues of impor-
tance to each member.
Theyre very active in Pauls-
dale, said Bear.
The blog launched on Oct. 11,
which is the International Day of
the Girl.
Since then, the girls have been
writing away, posting a new entry
each week.
For Hartsough, the opportuni-
ty was surprising.
I never thought that lobbying
our congressman would turn into
an appearance on Nickelodeon,
she said in a statement.
