Implementing Technology News

I Integrating Khan Academy in a math class by Peter McIntosh

Key Implementation factors

1. Technology is integrated into every intervention class period. Principals provide time for teacher professional learning and collaboration at least monthly. Students use technology daily for online collaboration (games/simulations and social media). Technology is integrated into core curriculum weekly or more frequently. Online formative assessments are done at least weekly. Lower r student-computer ratios improve outcomes. Virtual trips are very powerful. The best schools do these at least monthly. Students use search engines daily. Principals are trained in teacher buy-in, best practices, and technologytransformed learning.

PROPERLY IMPLEMENTTING TECHNOLOGY LEADS TO SUCCESS.

Most children now have access to mobile devices , teachers are using this to their advantage by incorporating devices that students already own into classroom lessons and projects. From mobile phones, i-pods, tablets to laptop computers, teachers and students are increasingly bringing technology to the classroom. Numerous studies have highlighted the benefits of one-to-one computing programs in nurturing creative thinking, positive classroom behaviour, and increasing attendance and test scores. Unfortunately, for many school districts, there is a lack of funds, to provide devices for each student. The solution may be found in asking students to bring their own devices to class, cutting back on the number of mobile devices the school needs to provide while still enhancing the learning experience.

PROJECT RED
Project RED (Revolutionizing Education) reveals that schools with 1-to-1 computing programs, report students achievement scores on high-stakes tests are on the rise up to 70 %. However, that number is increased to 85 % for schools with 1-to-1 computing programs that use proper implementation strategies ; including electronic formative assessments on a regular basis and frequent collaboration of teachers in professional learning communities. This study is believed to be the largest complete look at how technology is being used in schools, and what factors lead to the greatest success in education technology. The results indicated that: schools properly implementing 1-to-1 programs achieve more educational success than schools with higher student-to-computer ratios. Leadership and vision are two essential components in technology implementation, the study found, and while all schools can benefit from technology, the study shows that when principals receive specializing training and technology [is] properly implemented, the benefits increase even more, according to Project RED. Technology-infused intervention programs were the top predictor for improved high-stakes test scores, lower dropout rates, and improved discipline. Daily technology use was one of the top five indicators of better discipline, better attendance, and increased college attendance. http://www.eschoolnews.com/events/conferences/necciste/

Mobile Learning Mobile devices are a perfect
extension of snack learning . This concept, allows learners to engage in short bursts of learning while waiting in line, on the bus or sitting on the couch.

IMPLEMENTING TECHNOLOGY ISSUES

Professional Development
PROJECT RED confirmed each of the following plays a fundamental role in integrating technology. Daily technology use in core subject-area classes frequent technology use in intervention course and a low student-tocomputer ratio. Underutilization of technology may be a reflection of too little professional development, both for teachers and administrators.

Social media Collaboration and social

media are increasingly important as 21st-century skills become key factors in k-12 schools, colleges and workplaces. Web 2.0 social media substantially enhance collaboration productivity, erasing the barriers of time, distance, and money. Collaboration can now extend beyond the immediate circle of friends to include mentors, tutors, and experts worldwide. Real-time collaboration increases student engagement, one of the critical components for student success. http://www.projectred.org/

Professional development is important not just for educators in knowing how to use technology effectively in their classes, but also for administrators in leading transformational change in their schools. Schools with devices can help students learn, but proper implementation drives even greater gains. Michael Gielniak

Questions to ask before implementing technology

1. What are the goals for student technology proficiency? 2. What would a well-educated student from your school know and be able to do with technology by the end of 12th grade? 3. How do the various technology devices and tools used at your school lead to the proficiencies described above? 4. What professional development will teachers need to be successful in helping students meet the proficiencies described above? 5. What data should be collected to track the progress of your educational technology initiatives?

Educational technology has the potential of transforming education, so students develop 21st century literacy skills. A clear plan for implementation provides the framework for the successful and efficient use of educational technology.

Reader Beware
When studies are conducted and results are released, the reader must be aware of the validity of the study, that is, who is conducting the study and the purpose of the study. Intel is Project REDs lead sponsor, and the initiative has received support from Apple, the Pearson Foundation, Qwest, and eChalk. The stated goal of

Project RED is to prove that when properly implementedCaption describing picture or graphic. student achievement and investing in technology can boost will result in monetary savings for schools and local governments. The reader is left wondering if there a vested interest in the outcome of the project that may influence the findings, or is the study being conducted is such a manner, to prove a predetermined desired outcome.
