SEVERAL patients had to be evacuated from Altnagelvin Hospital last night as 50 firefighters tackled a major blaze. The hospital was closed to nonemergency admissions while NI Fire and Rescue, police and am-

bulance personnel dealt with the incident. Translink was also called upon to assist with transferring patients to other hospitals and care facilities. There have been no reports of any injuries. Hospitals across Northern Ireland and in Donegal were put on

stand-by to assist. In a statement issued last night, the Western Trust said it was reassuring the public that there are no injuries and the incident is under control. A number of fire appliances were required to contain the blaze and motorists were being advised to avoid the area due to

traffic disruption. A spokesman for the NI Ambulance Service described the emergency as a major incident. The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said a total of 49 firefighters and 11 appliances attended the scene. Turn to page 12
