Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and Salam Sejahtera.

It is with great pleasure I present to you The United Kingdom and Eire Council's (UKEC) publication of its Annual Report for the term 2011/2012. This annual report provides the summary of the wide array of events hosted by the UKEC committee over the past year, spanning from October 2011 up until August 2012. I am pleased with UKEC's accomplishments in organising various nation-building initiatives throughout the past year. 2012 kicked off with Projek Amanat Negara (PAN) in January encompassing a series of talks aimed to promote active dialogue between Malaysian students and frontrunners in their respective fields. March and April saw CV workshops in various parts of the UK, culminating in the inaugural Corporate Luncheon and our Annual Career Fair in London, in efforts to tackle the brain drain problem. UKEC also organised the Amazing Race in cities up Far North such as Durham and Newcastle, as we believe unity can likewise be fostered via wholesome recreational activities enjoyed by all. This July and August will be the second year for UKEC's community service initiatives UKECharisma, a student volunteerism summer program. Another brainchild of the UKEC is Projek Pelita, a book donation drive that aims through break the poverty cycle by cultivating the habit of reading. In addition, UKEC recently also launched [i]mpact, a movement to showcase the many different forms of positive action. Throughout the year UKEC has been active on the social media platform with our magazine, CEKU, alongside our production house, Connectwork, to provide avenues for the younger generation to express their views and opinions. Last but not least, the Malaysian Students Leaders Summit (MSLS) which was held on the 14th and 15th of July, UKEC's flagship event right here in Malaysia, continues to grow with each passing year. The growing reputation on MSLS has given credence to the desire within the youths of our nation to be actively involved in intellectual discourse, one of the basic foundations of nation building. Since its inception, UKEC has garnered a reputation of being an inspiring and remarkably successful youth movement by spearheading its own nation-building agenda through its core foundations. Having supported UKEC as its patron since its formation in 1995, I am confident that UKEC together with other youth organisations will continue their noble efforts in contributing towards nation building by inspiring young people to take on larger responsibilities and take bolder actions.

"Good habits formed at youth make all the difference". Aristotle's words couldn't be more true regarding the intricate process of nation building. UKEC has kept these words close to heart as the promotion of nation building through various activities will provide a solid foundation for Malaysia's leaders of tomorrow. As such, I hope that the youths currently abroad in the United Kingdom and Ireland should seize the opportunity presented to you - to maintain an open and inquisitive mind, learn as much as you can, speak up and let your voice be heard. It is the injection of the fervour from the youth that will propel Malaysia to the unparalleled heights of the future. Thank you to the sponsors for your generous support investing in Malaysia's promising young minds, enabling for the success of the myriad of events hosted by UKEC. Without your continuous support, UKEC's brand of student youth movement wouldn't have been the success that it is today. May UKEC continue to be the beacon of light for the continued progression of student activism. Terima Kasih.

CHAIRMANS

FOREWORD

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and Salam Sejahtera. On behalf of the United Kingdom and Eire Council of Malaysian Students (UKEC), it is with great honour that I present to you the Annual Report of the UKEC for the session 2011/2012. Over the past year, we have managed to host a plethora of events centred around UKEC's brand of student activism. Already in its 17th year, UKEC continues to go from strength to strength and this is evident with the expansion of existing projects and the introduction of new projects under our various portfolios. Firstly, allow me to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to UKEC's Corporate Sponsors as well as our sponsors for our flagship events, without whom none of our achievements would be possible. I would also like to thank the members of the Executive Council for all their hard work and effort in realizing our myriad of events over the past year. We deeply appreciate the astounding enthusiasm and fervour shown by our student population - both studying locally and abroad whose unwavering commitment to nation building has been the driving force behind the success we have seen over our one-year mandate. We at the UKEC truly value the support we have received as we endeavour to scale greater heights together for our beloved nation. Over the years, the role of the youth in nation building has taken a more central role than we have ever envisaged. Youths, particularly the young scholars of Malaysia have realised the need for an injection of fresh, new ideas that are needed for a revitalized approach towards nation-building. Malaysia is indeed moving out of its adolescent-stage of nationhood. From being an agrariancentred country, we have moved forward and embraced the impending wave of globalization. Our insatiable desire for progress has propelled us towards becoming one of the most competitive economies in the world and achieving the elusive status of a developed nation. Being the next in line to lead our great nation, we as youths must take note of the challenges and hurdles that we must face in the not too distant future. Race and religion will soon be blurry lines amongst Malaysians as unity and identity take precedence. We have to realise that it is our differences that will propel us forward, and not act as a hindrance. Now is no more the time to accept and understand. If we are to truly grow as a country, we have to assimilate as a society to forge ahead and write a better future for Malaysia.

Mistakes of the past will duly serve as a lesson to us all, the future generation, who will one day take helm of this country. As such, this has been the central pillar of this year's UKEC Executive Council to ensure the student activism movement continues to flourish over our time presiding in office. UKEC has continued to provide platforms across all disciplines for intellectual discourse amongst the movers and shakers of our country, which will then spur on a myriad of productive debates amongst the youths of our nation. We sincerely hope that the Malaysian youths would make full use of this glorious opportunity to discuss these issues pertaining to the goal of nation building and hopefully reaching a desired conclusion at the end of it all. Truly, it has been a great and enriching year for both myself and as well as the UKEC Executive Council. We have grown and developed by leaps and bounds with the successes of our flagship events in the United Kingdom, namely Projek Amanat Negara, which was held in January as well as our Career Fair in early April. The success of MSLS added another feather to our cap, rounding off an excellent year for the committee. These events have shown the great enthusiasm that lies within our generation to continue seeking for improvements within our own capabilities. It has truly been an honour to be able to serve the UKEC and the country. Thank you. Yang Berkhidmat untuk Negara dan UKEC BUILDING OUR UKEC FOR A SUSTAINABLE TOMORROW

HISTORY
The United Kingdom and Eire Council of Malaysian Students, better known by its acronym UKEC, is an umbrella body for Malaysian student societies across Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland. UKEC'S mission is to contribute towards nation building by championing our brand of student activism, which focuses on the following :

OF UKEC
Officially founded in 1995, the council serves as a common platform of interaction for Malaysian students across the region, at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. UKEC traces its humble origins as far back as the pre-war years when a group of hopeful students initiated an unofficial student movement in London. This movement was instrumental in creating a socio-political network among the educated Malayans back then. Camaraderie created through this network pioneered the fight for independence and later helped establish Malaya's post-Merdeka governments. The country's first two premiers, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj and Tun Abdul Razak were among the prominent members of the network. It has been widely said that the nation first two premiers started discussing the road to independence in the 1940s. However, this united movement disintegrated in the 1960s, when more Malaysian students attended British universities outside London. Malaysian societies in these universities were then founded and hence the need for a centralized organization was muted. As time progressed and the Malaysian student population burgeoned, the need for a common platform for Malaysian students across the country resurfaced. To address this need, a group of pioneering undergraduates formed an organization which brought together the leaders of Malaysian student societies in universities nationwide.

01 Community Development 02 Tackling Brain Drain 03 Developing Employability 04 Strengthening Unity 05 Providing Platforms for
Non-Partisan Intellectual Discourse

02

This new council tapped into new technology; most importantly the internet in connecting with the student population at large. The union of Malaysian students then spearheaded many beneficial activities with emphasis on raising awareness of national issues among the bright young minds. In 2006, the council unanimously voted to include Malaysian societies in the Republic of Ireland under its wings and embarked on a re-orientation program to make itself relevant to the changing demographics of the Malaysian student population. From then onwards, UKEC, a politically neutral student movement has grown by leaps and bounds in becoming a mature student movement with the assistance of the Malaysian Students Department (MSD) and financial aid from generous corporate sponsors as well as government agencies. UKEC today consists of the Executive Council and the Supreme Council. The Supreme Council is made up of all the Presidents and Vice Presidents of all the Malaysian Student Societies in universities across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. They are voted in by members of their respective societies. Then, every year at the Annual General Meeting (AGM), the Supreme Council votes the members of the Executive Council into office. This system ensures UKEC's role as a representative of Malaysian students in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

The council headquarters is currently located at Queensborough Terrace, Bayswater, London- a site hosted by the MSD (now known as Education Malaysia London).

INTRODUCTION
UKECharisma is an organization created to encourage student volunteerism by providing a reliable and sustainable framework for community service and leadership projects to be carried out in Malaysia. After a successful debut year in 2011, which saw two projects held simultaneously involving foreigners and locals as volunteers, the initiative has successfully expanded this year. Under the new directorship of Sharifah Shahirah Idid, UKECharisma organized three projects in July and August this year in Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan, and Sabah.

KL EDUCATION PROJECT
Date: 14th - 27th July 2012 Venue: SK Seri Setia Participants: 200 students from schools in Kuala Lumpur Volunteers: 18 volunteers from local and UK universities.

INTERESTING ELEMENTS
The bonds created between volunteers were very strong towards the end of the 14 days project, although almost all of them met for the first time. This is because of the shared accommodation and intense scheduling which increased the chance for these young, bright volunteers to become closer with each other. It is hoped that this group can create greater impact in the future. Diversity of volunteers who came from countries like Poland, Kazakhstan, Ireland, Scotland and England and not forgetting Malaysia. For the Malaysian volunteers, they all came from different states, from Penang to Johor to Kuala Lumpur.

SIGNIFICANT QUOTES
Two weeks of pure amazing and inspiring teaching (and shouting 'competition with the kids') with the most enthusiastic people on earth. Two weeks passed in a blink of an eye but made us felt like we've known each other for ages. When we work, we get things done and workshops run so smoothly in a team but we turn into kids no older than those we teach in school when we play, -Kiew Khai Cheng (volunteer) Joining UKECharisma 2012 was definitely one of the best decisions I've made in my life. I met the most amazing people to be around and to work with. The reason we were brought together was with the aim to teach English but what we received was much much more rewarding than expected. Two weeks passed by way too fast, but I'll be looking back at our voluntary work with big smiles and fond memories, -Farah Raihanah (volunteer)

EDUCATION PROJECT KELANTAN

Date: 16th - 19th July 2012 Venue: PondokModen, Jeli Participants: 120 top science stream form five students from 6 different schools across Jeli. Volunteers: 10 volunteers from local and UK universities. Aims: To increase English proficiency and to develop team building skills among the students.

INTERESTING ELEMENTS
First UKECharisma project outside Kuala Lumpur First UKECharisma project which is a full day camp. Before this, the projects were mainly after-class help and activities, alongside weekend seminar and workshops. As both volunteers and participants stayed at the same accommodation, there were more interactions between them. Volunteers conducted an essay writing competition where participants write a letter to the facilitators telling them their hope and dreams. We successfully generated an influx of highly ambitious letters which showed the enthusiasm of these students towards the end of the camp. Volunteers and Participants got in touch with each other after the event through Facebook due to a closer relationship between them, as it was a camp where more time was spent with each other.

INTRODUCTION
ProjekPelita was founded in 2011 as one of the social development initiatives under UKEC (United Kingdom and EIRE Council of Malaysian Students), with the objective of providing assistance for educational purposes for those living in rural Sarawak, irrespective of race, religion or creed. This year, Projek Pelita hosted the biggest book drive in Malaysia's history. The books were then used to restock schools in rural areas or public libraries in Sarawak. In its second year, Projek Pelita expanded exponentially under the directorship of Razin Rozman, with prominent social media presence, increased media coverage, and the recruitment of a large number of enthusiastic volunteers from all over Malaysia. The highlight of the achievements is the inclusion into Malaysia's Book of Records, being certified as the biggest number of old books collected at 58 100 books, almost double of the previous record which stood at 30 000.

INTRODUCTION
Blurb! is UKEC's very own pre-departure guide for students who are about to embark on their maiden journey to the United Kingdom and Eire. It was first published in 2009 and the first three Blurbs were produced in booklet form. This year, several changes had been introduced. We tried to make Blurb! more user- friendly and accessible to students by turning it into a blog, as an electronic platform allows for flexibility in updates and also is far more accessible to students and parents alike. While staying true to the aim of Blurb!, i.e. to be a one-stop centre for students to obtain information in preparation for their new life abroad, UKEC has taken the initiative to make it easy for students to navigate their way through the blog. This was done by introducing a timeline where visitors can clearly see which post they should read in a chronological order. In the mean time, we are currently working on making the website more mobile device friendly as well, to make it even more accessible.

UKEC
SUMMARY
GRADUAN, for the eighth time, jointly organised the UKEC-GRADUAN Career & Education Fair 2012 at University College London from 28th March to 2nd April. UKEC-GRADUAN 2012 included the following engaging activities: Northern Career Fair (Newcastle) Corporate Luncheon (London) UKEC-GRADUAN Career Fair (Central London). Representatives from nearly 40 companies and institutions from Malaysia and the UK participated in this fair. Over 150 professionals from both the government and corporate sectors attended the fair. Some of the participating companies started their own programmes a few days before the actual fair, conducting interviews, seminars and networking sessions. Participating companies also attended a briefing session on 31st March, a day before the London Career Fair, hosted by GRADUAN and UKEC. Participating companies were then led to set up their booths right after to prepare for the next day. Other than booth spaces, companies were also allocated with interview rooms, to ensure candidates would maximise their opportunities and time at the fair. Based on the statistics compiled by Education Malaysia (MSD) in London, there are more than 12,000 Malaysians currently studying in the United Kingdom and Eire, enrolled in at least 68 colleges and universities throughout the UK and Eire.

GRADUAN

CAREER & EDUCATIO

The event was another tremendous success and proved to be an important platform for the private sector as well as Government Linked Companies (GLCs) to promote their organisations to a pool of potential employees, namely Malaysian UK graduates. More companies this year offered positions in their organisations to a number of candidates from various academic backgrounds and universities. In the past years, this strategy proved to be effective in ensuring that candidates return to Malaysia for the jobs they had been offered.

MISSION 2 : T A C K L I N G BRAINDRAIN

ABOUT THE FAIR

The UKEC-GRADUAN Career & Education Fair was initially created based on the demands of Malaysians studying in the UK and Eire. Many of these students are seeking for information and opportunities back home. Through the fair, they are able to receive the knowledge they seek as well as the assurance of securing jobs when they return after their studies. This year, the fair has attracted participation from nearly 40 organisations from Malaysia. Not only that, the fair also witnessed a substantial increase in the number of student attendance.

OBJECTIVES
The main objective of the fair was to formally introduce and promote Malaysian UK undergraduates to the Malaysian job market and the opportunities that are available to them. Through the fair, graduates had the opportunity of meeting with representatives from nearly 40 Malaysian-based companies from various industries. The fair also provided graduates with a strong platform to enter the Malaysian workforce, with its many opportunities and resources. As for the participating companies, the fair was a great opportunity for them to promote their organisations as potential employers. This was a great branding exercise for the companies, as the fair gave them the chance to reach out to prospective candidates. Also, as most graduates lacked sufficient information on the career prospects in Malaysia, the fair gave participating companies and institutions the opportunity to profile themselves effectively.

CORPORATE LUNCHEON
INTRODUCTION
For the first time, UKEC-GRADUAN Careers Fair organized the Corporate Luncheon 2012 to add value to the Careers Fair Week. Corporate Luncheon 2012 is a one-day event where students with top Curriculum Vitae were given the chance to listen and meet with top Malaysian corporate leaders. It was a hybrid between a talk and networking events, where there were two forums in the beginning and a networking lunch to end the event. The event was held in Thistle Hotel, Marble Arch London in between the Northern Career Fair and the main Career Fair in University College London. The inaugural Corporate Luncheon hosted more than 10 top corporate leaders and attracted more than 2000 applications, in which 150 top students where invited.

OBJECTIVES
As a learning platform for future corporate leaders. Through this event, it is hoped that Malaysian students in the UK and Eire can learn from the intellectual discourse by the current corporate leaders in Malaysia. Help address the brain drain problem.

52

N
INTERESTING ELEMENTS
The Corporate Luncheon was initiated to connect top Malaysian students in the UK and Eire with the top corporate organizations in Malaysia. The annual career fair has managed to connect Malaysian students in general with companies in Malaysia. However, the Corporate Luncheon aimed to advance this further by accommodating to the top cohort of Malaysian students. The exclusivity of the event made it more attractive. Where most Malaysian networking events are open to public, the Corporate Luncheon was exclusive to selected final year students. The selection was done by our partner, Graduan, as they have vast experience in dealing with corporate bodies in Malaysia. This element of exclusivity aims to cater to the demands of top corporate organization in Malaysia to find suitable graduates for potential recruitment.

The Corporate Luncheon also aimed to be balanced in terms of its input, as to capture the attention of the participants as well as to inspire them. The choice of topics for the forums were neither too niche nor too basic. Networking sized upon, to students teract and in particular was emphaand ample time was given and corporate leaders to inconnect with one another.

INTRODUCTION
The North-East Region of England has been a rather quiet and somewhat neglected zone with regards to student activity in recent years. It is still very unfortunate that there are many Malaysians in this particular region who were completely unaware of the benefits that UKEC and RakanMuda has to offer. Besides getting to know Malaysian society members from neighbouring universities, this annual event gave our fellow Malaysian students from other parts of the UK and Ireland a chance to visit the historic North-East of England. This year the UKEC- RakanMuda Amazing Race was particularly special as it offered many modern and exhilarating activities. These activities include paintball, go-kart racing, zorbing, football, rock climbing and shooting. Coming into its third year, the event has garnered strong support, especially from our partners RakanMuda and Tourism Malaysia.

To act as a platform for students to develop and improve their leadership and communication skills. To promote healthy competition and sportsmanship amongst students. To provide opportunities for Malaysian students to meet and exchange ideas. To unite and strengthen friendship among Malaysians from all over the UK. To foster greater interaction and collaboration with students of other nationalities. To help promote Malaysian culture and tourism in the UK amongst the various local students and community members abroad.

EVALUATION
Given the location of the North-East region, the event was a big success with over 150- 200 participating students, many of them being international.

UKEC BUZZ
BACKGROUND
BUZZ is a new initiative by the UKEC to empower students with a voice to express their opinions on national issues. In line with our vision to promote non-partisan intellectual discourse, this project provides a platform for students to bring forward their opinions and engage with each other constructively. The concept involves a round-table dialogue between students, without involving any outside speakers. In anticipation of the 13th General Election, a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on electoral reform, consisting representatives from government and opposition, has been set up to improve our electoral system. The underlying question is, how are these reforms being perceived by us, the younger generation? The first edition of BUZZ was on the Electoral Reform. Views were exchanged on issues such as the recommendations by Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on electoral reform, demands by BERSIH and case studies in other countries. Factsheets were prepared for participants in order to facilitate discussion.

INTRODUCTION
The 9th Projek Amanat Negara was successfully held at the Thistle Marble Arch Hotel, London on the 29th of January 2012. It was attended by over 400 students in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Its resounding success must be credited to the resurgence among Malaysian students to better understand events taking place in the country. Over the course of the summit, various prominent speakers were flown in from Malaysia to engage and share their respective views on various issues affecting the country. As Malaysia strives to become a high-income nation by the year 2020, it is becoming even more important to address pertinent issues which could become obstacles to our drive to achieve Vision 2020.

LAUNCHING CEREMONY
To commence the highly anticipated Projek Amanat Negara IX, UKEC invited Dato' Seri Mustapa Mohamad, Minister of International Trade and Industry to launch the event. The launching ceremony was held on the 28th of January 2012 at Education Malaysia London. The attendance of almost 100 guests including students, officials from Education Malaysia as well as speakers for PAN 2012 reflected the anticipation and support to this year's Projek Amanat Negara. In his speech, Dato' Seri Mustapa talked about the economic transformation program launched by the government. The audience was given an opportunity to listen to the insights from one of the country's best economists on the transformation program, as well as the issues and challenges faced by the government in propelling Malaysia's economy. His speech ended by him launching the Projek Amanat Negara IX and congratulating the UKEC Committee for organising such an event.

VOTER REGISTRATION
FOR STUDENTS STUDYING IN THE UNITED KINGDOM & REPUBLIC OF IRELAND
INTRODUCTION
Elections (Registration of Electors) Regulation 2002 regulates that any Malaysians engaged in full-time studies at any university, training college or any higher educational institution outside the boundaries of Peninsular Malaysia or Sabah or Sarawak can register as absent voters. In a recent discussion with the Deputy Chairman of the Election Commission, Datuk Wira Wan Ahmad Wan Omar has also further clarified that all students, sponsored or private are eligible to register as absent voters for their respective constituencies. The main aim of this activity is to encourage students currently based in the UK & Ireland to register to vote. Voting is a fundamental right of all citizens and the UKEC encourages students to exercise their right to vote. Aware of the various press releases by the Election Commission (EC) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding absent voters, UKEC was delighted to organize a voter registration drive to get as many students as possible in UK & Ireland to register to vote. The step-by-step procedure29 on how to register as a postal voter (absent voter) was 30 published on the UKEC website .
Prepared by: Logeswaran Selvarajah UKEC Regional Chairman Ireland 2011/2012 E-mail: logesselva@ukeconline.com

OBJECTIVES
To encourage students to exercise their right to vote - UKEC would like to further reiterate its stand on the importance of involving students in nation building. This also reflects the motion passed in the UKEC Annual General Meeting 2011 to encourage all Malaysian students overseas to vote. To reinforce the regional government UKEC believes that registering students will allow a more diverse vote bank for election candidates to approach and thus this would lead to a more mature democracy. To cultivate a sense of pride for one's nation amongst Malaysian students - By voting, students demonstrate a sense of belonging to their beloved country. Voting allows students to be connected to Malaysia despite being away from home. To combat the brain drain problem - In the long run, involving students in the electoral process would instil patriotism as they will have a direct say in electing their future leaders.

DRIVE
OUTCOMES
Overall, approximately 200 students studying in the UK and Ireland registered as both normal voters and postal voters over the week after the event was publicised both through email and social media. In addition to that, the Elections Commissions is also mulling the possibility of electing student body leaders as Assistant Registars to enable direct registration through student societies.

SUGGESTIONS
The location of the venue was situated away from the city where most students live and as results of this was difficult to reach. A possible suggestion will be to organize the registration drive in colleges or institutions in the city which is readily accessible (ie; RCSI Hall/ UCD Student Centre). The confusion regarding voters status and possibility of registration arose from a communication breakdown between the Elections Commissions in Malaysia and the Foreign Ministry and its associated designates. A newsletter should be made available to all foreign consulates regarding the possibility for students to register as voters to avoid this confusion. More registration drives could be held to increase awareness regarding the possibility to register as voters for students studying overseas.

CEKU

INTRODUCTION
CEKU is UKEC's online publication, and markets itself as an online student magazine run by Malaysian students for Malaysian students. CEKU is run autonomously by a separate committee, with its director/editor-in-chief being appointed by the UKEC chairman. The website can be visited at http://www.ceku.org.

Melissa Kong, CEKU Editor In Chief 2011/2012 and Levina Lim, CEKU Marketing Director 2011/2012 E-mail: melissa@ukeconline.com

The increase in the number of committee members has enabled CEKU to work on and publish more articles, which in turn stimulated a growth in online readership. It should also be noted that involvement of members from the UKEC committee in the CEKU committee also helps to strengthen CEKU's position and impact through complementing UKEC events, both flagship or otherwise. CEKU can complement UKEC in two main ways: through the publishing of major CEKU issues in conjunction with flagship events (thus extending the effect of the event) and also through publicizing events both before and after they occur by publishing relevant articles and videos on CEKU. It is hoped that UKEC will make an effort to appoint future editors of CEKU who have experience in working with or within UKEC, and thus have an understanding of how UKEC functions, in order to optimize both the UKEC-CEKU relationship and CEKU's performance on a whole. CEKU also works closely with Connectwork by helping to conduct interviews (both individual and voxpop) and in transcribing video interviews that have poor sound or visual quality and thus are not suitable for video release.

COMMITTEE
This year, CEKU significantly expanded its committee. In the previous year, the team behind CEKU consisted of only 4 people. This year, the figure has expanded to 10. The members of the CEKU team are as follows: Editor-in-Chief : Melissa Kong Assistant Editor-in-Chief: Amirah Amir Creative Director: Stanley Liew Outreach Director: Syahirah Syed Jaafar Marketing Director: Levina Lim Editorial Writers: Aira Nur Ariana Azhari Nishyodhan Balasundram Sara Rijaluddin Vivegavalen Vadi Valu Yeoh Tze Ni

PROJECTS & INITIATIVES

CEKU's first initiative was to change its website layout, to make it look more like an online magazine. CEKU also started accompanying each published article with at least one photo or video, to make the articles more visually stimulating. CEKU also started creating factsheets to accompany articles on certain issues, so as to give readers better insight into the basis of the article. The factsheets that have been published so far are about Walk4Freedom and Vision 2020. These factsheets have been saved under the Resources tab on the website, alongside factsheets UKEC has prepared for conferences and summits. The types of articles published on CEKU's website have been increased in their diversity. This year, the CEKU team began publishing written voxpop articles (in which CEKU writers interviewed respondents on various issues and published their responses) and photo essays. This year, CEKU chose to publish 4 major issues: December 2011, February 2012 (in conjunction with ProjekA manat Negara IX), April 2012 (in conjunction with the 8th UKEC-GRADUAN Career Fair) and July 2012 (in conjunction with the 6th Malaysian Student Leaders Summit). Of the four issues, only the July 2012 edition was printed - this was to reduce the cost of other events and also to stimulate our online readership base. The print edition of CEKU this year also endeavoured to have a more colourful and magazine-like appearance in order to attract more readers, as opposed to the journal-like appearance of editions of CEKU in previous years. Unlike last year, where 2 competitions were conducted, CEKU opted to hold only one photo essay competition this year in conjunction with the 6th Malaysian Student Leaders Summit.
Image: Cover of the July edition of CEKU in conjunction with the 6th Malaysian Student Leaders Summit

CEKU continued the initiative of last year's committee in its weekly column with The Malaysian Insider. Two writers decided to stop writing for The Malaysian Insider, and subsequently two new writers were engaged. Currently, the four students writing for CEKU in The Malaysian Insider on a weekly basis are Angeline Lee, Adelyn Yeoh, Ezlan Mohsen and Syazwan Zainal. CEKU chose to discontinue the UKECari research initiative given the lack of resources -no one on the current team has the experience and expertise to conduct such research. By using UKEC as a platform for his or her research, the student in question would stand to widen his or her sample size for his or her research, while UKEC would build a reputation for diversity in its initiatives in nation-building.

STATISTICS
This section highlights the breakdown of statistics for CEKU's website and Facebook page. It should be noted that prior to the CEKU 2011/12 team taking over, the main focus of CEKU was on the print editions of the magazine (of which 2 were printed in 2011, in conjunction with Projek Amanat Negara and the Malaysian Student Leaders Summit) and NOT on the online content. Thus, prior to 2011/12, CEKU did not have much of an online presence except for its Facebook page.

CONNECTWORK

Prepared by: Lisa Amani Abdul Rahim Director of Connectwork 2011/2012 E-mail: lisaamani.a.r@ukeconline.com

SUMMARY
Connectwork acts as the media arm for UKEC. It is also the broadcasting production house for UKEC. Connectwork manages UKEC's Youtube Channel31 which is ukectv. Connectwork also produces audio podcasts. Over the past year, Connectwork made a lot of progress since it was first established in early 2011. Its content ranges from interviews, voice-of-the-people videos as well as event promotional videos. Connectwork has interviewed many notable public personalities such as YB Khairy Jamaluddin, YB Nurul Izzah, YB Tony Pua, Rafizi Ramli & Dato' Saifuddin Abdullah. In these interviews, various issues have been discussed but much revolved around what students can learn from their expertise and experiences. We also promote any form of student-led activities in the UK, like the biggest Malaysian student gathering in the UK, the Nottingham Malaysian Games. At the moment, Connectwork has produced 54 videos and 2 audio podcasts since our formation in February 2011. Connectwork consists of 12 people divided into 2 sub teams, editorial and broadcasting. The editorial team prepares the subject content for our videos whilst the broadcasting team prepares the creative content for our materials. ukectv, UKEC's Youtube channels has now 302,592 views with 264 subscribers. Our videos have been liked 1138 times and commented upon 675 times.

CONNECTWORK

98

As seen in the table above, most of our subscribers are from Malaysia followed by the UK. This can be explained by the fact that our targeted audience base in the UK are less than in Malaysia*.

*According to the Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) there are approximately 13900 Malaysian students studying in the UK.

MONTHLY STATISTICAL SUMMARY

On one hand, the rate at which new videos are added has been quite steady throughout the year. On the other hand, the increment in the number of views that Youtube is receiving has generally been increasing. This is reflected in the total number of views being 14170 in July 2012 from only 1474 in August 2011. Ukectv is becoming more established and popular amongst Youtube viewers(of which its demographics have been discussed earlier). Based on the data for our net change of subscribers per month and the number of likes that ukectv received, it also reflects that UKEC is not only reaching out to more people but is getting the viewers more engaged in our productions.

Despite not posting any videos in May due to examinations, ukectv continues to be watched by thousands.
