About this Manual Weve added this manual to the Agilent website in an effort to help you support your

product. This manual is the best copy we could find; it may be incomplete or contain dated information. If we find a more recent copy in the future, we will add it to the Agilent website.

Support for Your Product Agilent no longer sells or supports this product. Our service centers may be able to perform calibration if no repair parts are needed, but no other support from Agilent is available. You will find any other available product information on the Agilent Test & Measurement website, www.tm.agilent.com.

HP References in this Manual This manual may contain references to HP or Hewlett-Packard. Please note that Hewlett-Packard's former test and measurement, semiconductor products and chemical analysis businesses are now part of Agilent Technologies. We have made no changes to this manual copy. In other documentation, to reduce potential confusion, the only change to product numbers and names has been in the company name prefix: where a product number/name was HP XXXX the current name/number is now Agilent XXXX. For example, model number HP8648A is now model number Agilent 8648A.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Operating Note A schematic diagram of the HP 11635A bias decoupling network is shown in Figure 1. In addition to eliminating the possibility of inductance related oscillations when biasing active devices, the HP 11635A also has circuitry which insures oscillation-free operation when biasing bipolar transistors. Both the High and Low Capacitance Supply sections provide the proper terminations to prevent low frequency oscillations when biasing bipolar transistors.
Initial Inspection

This Operating Note contains information c required to install and operate the HewlettPackard 11635A bias decoupling network. . . Listed on the back cover is a microfiche part number. The number can be used to order 4 x 6 microfilm transparencies of this Operating Note. *. .. . . Specifications . . Instrument specifications are listed in Table1. These specifications are the performance standards or limits against which the instrument is . tested
l

Description

The HP 11635A bias decoupling network prevents bias oscillations from occurring when applying bias to transistors or negative resistance devices through HP bias networks or S-parameter test sets. The HP 11635A should be used when biasing any transistor through the following S-parameter test sets that have a serial number preceding or including the one indicated in the table below. If the test set has a later serial number, the HP 11635A should be used only when biasing bipolar transistors. . The HP 11635A should also be used when biasing any transistor through the following HP bias networks: HP 11589A*, HP 11590A*, or HP 11612A.

Inspect the shipping container for damage. If the shipping container or cushioning material is damaged, it should be kept until the contents of the shipment have been checked for completeness and the instrument has been checked mechanically and electrically. If the contents are incomplete, or if there is mechanical damage or defect, notify the nearest Hewlett-Packard office. If the shipping container is damaged, or the cushioning material shows signs of stress, notify the carrier as well as the Hewlett-Packard of&e. Keep the shipping materials for the carriers inspection. The HP office will arrange for repair or replacement at HP option without waiting for claim settlement.

Iing network is connected in line between the bias supply and the specific bias network, or between the bias supply and the speci$c bias input of the network analyzer test set. Refer to Figure 2.
Mating Connectors. The mating connectors for

BNCconnectors are the opposite sex BNCconnectars. A 23 cm (9 inch) BNC cable is included for connection from the BIAS OUTPUT connector on the LOW CAPACITANCE SUPPLY section to the BIAS INPUT connector on the far right of the HP 11635A. For connection to the HP 11612A, bias network, a BNC male to SMB female cable is included.
Operating Environment

The instrument may be operated in environments within the following limits: Temperature . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0 to +55*c Humidity . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . up to 95% Altitude *..**a Up to 7625 meters (25,000 feet) The instrument should be protected from temperature and humidity conditions which cause condensation within the instrument.
STORAGE AND SHIPMENT

Different connections are made to and from the HP 11635A depending on the type of bias supply used, the type of device being biased, and the device configurations. Various set-ups are shown in Figure 3. These set-ups also appear on the label on the underside of the HP 11635A. It should be noted that the symbol for the transistor denotes the bias network or S-parameter test set, and transistor. The following describes these set-ups for each type of device.
Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs). When applying bias to the base of a BJT in the common emitter configuration (with or without an emitter resistor) or the emitter follower configuration, the HP 11635A should be installed. The interconnection of the HP 11635A depends on the output capacitance of the bias supply to which the emitter or collector is connected. If the collector/emitter supply has an output capacitance less that 0. lpf (as do the HP 8717B, 4141A and 4145A bias supplies), install the HP 11635A in the base circuit as shown in Figure 3a.

The instrument may be stored in environments within the following limits: Temperature . . . . . . ... . ... -40C to +7sc Humidity . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ... up to 95% Altitude . . . . . . Up to 7625 meters (25,000 feet) The instrument should be protected from temperature and humidity conditions which cause condensation within the instrument.
Packaging Tagging for Service. If the instrument is being

returned to Hewlett-Packard for service, attach a tage indicating the type of service required, return address, and model number. In any correspondence, refer to the instrument by model number.

If the collector/emitter supply has an output capacitance greater than 1 pf (as do .the HP 6200 series supplies and batteries), install the HP 11635A in the base circuit as shown in Figure 3b. . When using the HP 11612A bias network or HP S-parameter test sets manaufactured prior to 1984, and biasing a bipolar transistor in the common emitter configuration (with or without an emitter resistor), or common base configuration, the HP 11635A should be installed in the collector circuit as shown in Figure 3c. A similar installation of an HP 11635A should be made in the emitter circuit when biasing a bipolar transistor in the emitter follower or common base configuration.
