DELPHOS St. Johns boys basketball coach Aaron Elwer is used to biding his time this time of year getting prepared for the new season. After all, for the previous four seasons, he has had to do the same thing while the gridiron Blue Jays play out success in that arena. Currently, he has 13 players practicing while he waits for the football playoffs to round out: fourth-year senior letterwinner Curtis Geise (14.1 markers, 4.0 boards, 3.3 dimes per game), third-year senior letterman Ryan Buescher (10.9 counters, 6.0 caroms, 2.2 assists), senior Cole Fischbach

Lady Jays a handful for veteran cage coach Grothouse

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com DELPHOS Dan J. (Beeze) Grothouse will have a handful to deal with in 2012-13 a handful of letterwinners, that is as he commences his 24th season at the helm with a 344-182 slate. That includes last winters 14-7 edition of the Lady Blue Jays (5-4 in the Midwest Athletic Conference). We have some experience back but out of our 11 players on the varsity roster, we also have a lot of inexperience. We have a usual mix of veterans and new players that we have to put together and become a team, Grothouse said. Right now, were still facing a lot of uncertainty in our lineup, as far as finding our roles and who will fit in where. Its not really happening as fast as wed like but our schedule doesnt allow that to take a long time; were going to having to accelerate that process because we open with one of the MAC favorites, New Knoxville, in our opening game. He does return a good measure of size and will have that throughout the 11-girl varsity roster as third-year senior Katie Vorst (5-11 post; 8.6 markers, 5.6 caroms per game), third-year senior Jessica Recker (5-6 guard; 5.6 points), senior Madison Zuber (5-8 guard; .6 points), junior Erica Saine (5-9 wing; 2.8) and classmate Emilie Fischbach (5-4 guard; 1.0) are back from a unit that averaged 41.8 points and ceded 38. Defense will remain the focus on the 2012-13 Jays. Weve built our teams on defense the last few years and well need defense to set the tone for us even more this year because our struggles mostly are on the offensive end, Grothouse continued. Its a matter of gaining confidence and a level of comfort in trusting

We have decent size overall but we arent as quick as we have been; quickness has been one of our strengths and were going to have to come up with ways to off-set that strength that we had before. We will also have to focus on rebounding as we do every year because we have size but we arent huge overall and we play against some big teams and big girls nightly; you have to find ways to counter that each time.
Dan J. Grothouse, head coach, Lady Blue Jay basketball

some big teams and big girls nightly; you have to find ways to counter that each time. We always look for leadership every year to take charge and make them their team; were still a work in progress. We have to come together as a group at some point and we need that to happen right away; I figure it will and its only a matter of when and how quickly it happens. Grothouse will look to fresh faces such as senior Casey Schnipke (5-5 guard), junior Brooke Zuber (5-6 guard), Amanda Boberg (5-7 guard), sophomore Rebekah Fischer (5-8 guard), sophomore Tara Vorst (5-7 wing) and freshman Sydney Fischbach (5-11 post). The Jays added Paulding as a part of their new 22-game varsity schedule but will face their usual bevy of non-conference heavyweights, as well as the usual tough MAC slate. Assisting Grothouse in the varsity coaching duties is Dan Youngpeter. Coaching the junior varsity is Gordon Fairchild. The members of that team are Fischer, Tara Vorst, Sydney Fischbach, sophomore Emilee Grothouse (5-8 wing), See LADY JAYS, page 10

what we are doing as individuals and a unit; for most of the girls, varsity ball is a new experience its intensity and level of play and they are uncertain right now as they figure it out. Especially since he lost due to graduation the likes of 3-year varsity players Courtney Grothouse (5-10 guard; 11.6 points, 3.8 boards, 5.6 assists) and Shelby Reindel (5-11 wing; 10.0 markers, 7.2 caroms, 2.0 assists) and glue girl Julie Bonifas (1.4 markers, 4.4 rebounds). We have decent size overall but we arent as quick as we have been; quickness has been one of our strengths and were going to have to come up with ways to off-set that strength that we had before, Grothouse added. We will also have to focus on rebounding as we do every year because we have size but we arent huge overall and we play against

Sterling expects solid mat season for Jays

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com

DELPHOS Derek Sterling has been the St. Johns wrestling coach for three years and has had to endure late starts due to the football teams success in that time. He has compiled a 19-10 dual mark (5-3 in 2011-12). With only three seniors graduating from last winters edition state qualifiers Logan Heiing and Logan Looser and Adam Haunhorst he expects another strong campaign with nine starters back. Back in the lineup are senior Will Buettner, senior Luke Wrasman, senior Brett Schwinnen, senior Aaron Deffenbaugh, junior Austin Martin, junior Nate Schroeder, sophomore Wes Buettner, sophomore Alex Haunhorst and sophomore Justin Siefker. We are coming off a pretty successful season; we have four wrestlers back that went deep in the district tournament. Will Buettner is a returning state alternate, while Brett is coming back after placing sixth at districts, Sterling noted. Also, Austin was a match away from a chance to

Its the best of the situation we found ourselves in and hopefully, it will pay off earlier in the season. He should get the football-playing members of his crew back this week or next as they finished out their season with a loss in the Regional finals Nov. 16. Gone from last season due to graduation are the likes of deep-shooter Alex Clark (9.2 points, 37.3% 3-pointers), Ben Warnecke (3.3 points, 3.0 caroms), Tanner Calvelage (5.1 counters, 1.9 dimes), Josh Rode (.2 points in 15 games) and Aaron Ledyard (5 games). Paul Sadler will return as the varsity assistant coach, along with Steve Recker, with Craig Hershey and Brian Clark doing the same for the junior varsity outfit. St. Johns is slated to open the 201213 campaign on Friday, Dec. 7, at home versus Crestview.

We are coming off a pretty successful season; we have four wrestlers back that went deep in the district tournament. Jefferson boys taller, younger for 2012-13

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com DELPHOS The last couple of seasons, the Jefferson boys basketball crew has not had a lot of height in its arsenal. This years edition may not be giant but eighth-year head man Marc Smith has far more size and an even younger overall roster for 2012-13 as he seeks to bounce back from a 3-19 team a year ago. That mark included a 1-8 record in the Northwest Conference. Five lettermen return from that crew, including starters in third-year

We are very excited to get this season underway. We have some talented players that are expected to step up and fulfill various roles for our team success. Overall, we return five key contributors from last years squad whove had another year to gain strength and improve their basketball skills. As with any successful team, we must learn to play together and accept our individual roles.

junior Ross Thompson, a doubledouble machine (6-2 post/guard; 10.0 points, 10.5 boards per outing), third-year junior point guard Austin Jettinghoff (6-0; 5.0 points, 2.0 assists) and second-year sophomore Nick Fitch (6-2 post; 4.0 markers, 4.5 caroms). Also back is sixth-man Zach Ricker (5-11 senior guard; 3.0 points) and senior Seth Wollenhaupt (6-0 post/ guard). If the season would start today, wed have a starting five of Austin,

Zach, Ross and Nick. Ross is a returning all-NWC selection from a year ago, Smith noted. We were disappointed with our 2011-12 season and we appear to have the appropriate mix of experience and young talent to do better. We are very excited to get this season underway. We have some talented players that are expected to step up and fulfill various roles for our team success. Overall, we return five key contributors from last years squad whove had another year to

gain strength and improve their basketball skills. As with any successful team, we must learn to play together and accept our individual roles. Only two players exhausted their eligibility when last season ended: Nick Dunlap and Shayn Klinger. Those holes will need to be filled by a trio of varsity newcomers: Jordon Williams (6-3 junior post/ guard), junior Tyler Mox (5-11 guard) and freshman Trey Smith (6-4 guard/ post). Trey would be our fifth starter right now; he brings good athleticism and has the potential to be a really good player for us, Coach Smith acknowledged. Jordon is an athlete and could compete for a starting spot. Tyler and Seth will be players off the bench for us and provide the depth we need to try and play the up-tempo game I prefer on both ends of the floor, where we can extend our defense at times and try to get into transition. We are excited about the potential of our newcomers as they get their first taste of varsity basketball. We must improve on the defensive end of the floor and stay competitive on the boards while playing to the talents of our returning players and talented newcomers. We hope to improve as the year progresses so we are playing our best basketball as the tournament approaches. If needed, Coach Smith can turn to further depth and size provided by junior Tyler Rice (6-1 guard), sophoSee JEFFERSON BOYS, page 17

Hoffman back for 31st year at Jefferson girls helm

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com

DELPHOS Jefferson girls basketball coach Dave Hoffman achieved a milestone not many have accomplished by going over 400 wins for his 30-year varsity career. He did so with a crew that finished 16-7 and Division IV district runnersup (13-time district level), claiming his 10th Northwest Conference crown (champ or co-champ) at 8-1. He commences the 2012-13 campaign with a 401-255 mark 200-86 in the NWC (437-285 overall with seven years as boys freshmen coach) and returns six letterwinners back from that edition of Lady Wildcats. Despite that experience, no seniors are on the new roster, leaving Hoffman with a veteran but still youthful lineup. Back for another go-round are junior Rileigh Stockwell (5-7 guard; 3.5 points, 3.2 rebounds per game), junior Gabrielle Pimpas (5-3 guard; 1.9 points, 1.9 boards), junior Hannah Sensibaugh (5-5 guard; 1.8 counters, 1.7 caroms; coming off injuryplagued 2011-12 in playing only six games due to ACL), junior Makayla

We will only have 15 total players, so depth will be a problem. Still, we look to improve as the season goes on and the young players get game experience and develop team chemistry with the experienced players we have; well need to understand the roles that those girls will need to play. Varsity newcomer Heather Pohlman (5-5 guard) will also play an important part as the year progresses.
Dave Hoffman, head coach, Lady Wildcat basketball

Binkley (5-4 guard; 1.3 markers, 0.5 rebounds), junior Katie Goergens (5-8 guard; .9 markers, 1.3 caroms) and sophomore Brooke Culp (5-5 guard; 3.1 points, 2.6 caroms; played in only 10 games due to ankle injury). Those six players will be counted on to lead this team this year, along with varsity newcomer Brooke Hesseling (5-4 junior guard) will be counted upon to lead the Lady Cats for the 2012-13 season, Hoffman said. However, five seniors exhausted their eligibility when the season ended last winter, including long-time Lady

Wildcats in first-team All-NWC performers and leading scorers Courtney Lewis and Kennedy Boggs, along with forward/center Megan Gilden, forward Elizabeth Schosker and guard Samantha Thitoff. Kennedy and Courtney were 1st-Team NWC and composed most of the scoring output for us last year. We do not have any seniors on the team this year, so we will be very young and inexperienced in the leadership area but do have those six experienced players, Hoffman continued. We will still be rely-

ing on our quickness and aggressive play to force an up-tempo game and by using pressing and a trapping defense; however, do have some strength inside with (junior newcomer) Jasmine McDougall (5-7 post) and height with Shelby Koening (6-1 sophomore post). Jamie Lewis returns for his 23rd year as the junior varsity coach and Ryan Carder will be a volunteer coach. We have a good group of JV players with five freshmen and three sophomores combining playing time on the varsity because of lack of depth caused by lack of seniors. This group of younger players is very athletic and looks to be very competitive, Hoffman added. The NWC should be very competitive this year. Crestview, Columbus Grove, Lima Central Catholic, Allen East, Ada and Lincolnview all have excellent teams, along with Paulding, Bluffton and Spencerville being very competitive.

Wilson hopes for successful encore and more in sophomore mat campaign at Jefferson
The Delphos Herald Wildcats is expected to be the likes of senior Quinten Wessell who missed out on a chance at state last winter due to an injury in the districts senior heavyweight Geoff Ketcham, senior Colin McConnahea and others. For the first time ever, the Wildcats will be able to vie for the 1st annual State Dual-Team Championship approved by the Ohio High School Athletic Association, along with the normal individual and team titles. The state will be divided into eight regions, each having approximately 24 teams (per division), and each region will be geographically subdivided in half. Each half-region will seed four teams and the regional quarterfinals will be held at the highest-seeded schools in Jan. 23. The winning two teams will advance to the Regional semifinals on Jan. 30. Each team from each semifinal will advance to the Regional finals Feb. 5. Eight regional champions per division will meet on Feb. 9 to wrestle for the OHSAA Dual-Team Championship. The tournament site is yet to be determined. One more change for 2012-13 in agreement with the National Federation of State High School Associations includes a stiffer stalling penalty: wrestlers called for a third stalling violation will not only receive a 2-point penalty but the opponent will now have the option of position on the next restart. Jefferson begins the 2012-13 process on Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Oak Harbor Invitational.

DELPHOS Mike Wilson had a pretty successful debut as the head varsity wrestling coach at Jefferson in 2011-12. He had the second individual state wrestling champion in the programs 12-year history Curtis Miller, who topped the 215-pound ranks in the 2011-12 Division III State Wrestling Championships, as did his brother, Stuart, in 2008-09. However, the 3-time state qualifier graduated, as did Darren Edinger. Leading this years crew of

Turnwald returns handful of vets for Ottoville boys cagers

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com OTTOVILLE Todd Turnwald returned home in 201112 to take over the helm of the Ottoville boys basketball crew. Beginning his sophomore year at the helm of the Big Green boys, he brings back a handful of returning players to try and add to his 6-year mark (overall) of 69-59, fresh off a 3-17 team last winter. We are pleased with the quality of kids we have in our program. This group of kids has worked extremely hard in the off-season, Turnwald noted. They have what it takes to be successful on and, most importantly, off the floor. These young men have gained a lot of experience from last year and they are wanting nothing more than to build on that. Hoping to do just that are the five letterwinners back, including senior Derek Schimmoeller, senior Cory Honigford, senior Ryan Honigford, junior Luke Schimmoeller and sophomore Brandt Landin. Gone via graduation are Jared Byrne and 6-6 Kevin Schnipke, as well as others that chose not to go out this winter. Seeking to replace those that are no longer around are promising newcomers such as senior Cory Fischer, sophomore Austin Honigford, Tyler Roby and Matt Turnwald. Assisting Turnwald in the coaching duties are Adam Koester, Terry Byrne and Brandon Miller. Our coaching staff is extremely proud of these kids for wanting to get this program back to where it was a few years ago. The coaches and players are striving for the same purpose and as long as we achieve that, it will be a successful season for us, he added. We are very excited to get started and also very excited to welcome some new teams on our schedule. It should be a fun season for all. The Big Green boys commence 2012-13 on Friday, Nov. 30, on the road at Cory-Rawson.

Lady Green loaded for banner cage season

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com OTTOVILLE Ottovilles girls basketball team has built up quite a legacy under head coach Dave Kleman, entering his 21st year at the helm with a 373-95 career mark. With six letterwinners back from a team that was eliminated in the Division IV regional semifinals with a 23-1 record, he has the tools to keep adding higher numbers to the left side of his record. That edition of Lady Green cagers also swept the Putnam County League with a 7-0 slate. This crew will be led by fourth-year starter/letterwinner Abby Siefker, the PCL and District 8 Player of the Year, a firstteam All-Northwest Ohioan and secondteam All-Stater (6-2 senior post; 14 points, 10.8 boards, 2.1 assists per game). As well, fourth-year letterwinner Rachel Beining (6-0 senior post; 8.0 counters, 6.8 caroms), third-year player Nicole Vorst (5-6 senior guard; 6.0 points, 3.1 assists), returning starter Rachel Turnwald (5-6 senior guard, 7.0 markers, 3.2 assists), Tonya Kaufman (5-7 junior guard; 6.0 counters, 2.5 dimes) and Taylor Mangas (5-10 junior guard; 3.0 counters) also bring veteran presences back for Kleman. With all this experience, Kleman will be able to play the usual game he prefers, especially a balanced offense. We should be very strong on the inside with some excellent size. We should be an excellent rebounding team and will look to run our usual uptempo style, Kleman said. We should be a very solid offensive team with multiple scorers. A trio of Lady Green players exhausted their eligibility a year ago, taking with them 11 letters: Lauren Kramer (guard/forward), Lauren Koch (guard) and Megan Bendele (forward). Thus, Kleman must find replacements for that trio amongst top prospects such as Kendra Eickholt (5-8 junior wing), Monica Sarka (5-7 junior wing), Annie Lindeman (6-0 sophomore post/wing), Courtney Von Sossan (5-5 sophomore wing) and Haley Landwehr (5-4 sophomore wing). We will have to develop some depth at all five positions, Kleman added. We expect to have an excellent season, led by a core group of seniors that have had success throughout their careers. We should be fighting for the PCL crown and would like to make a deep run in the tournament. Our main goal is to play as hard as possible in practice and games to make us the best team we can be. We want to do our best and enjoy every minute of the season. Vaughn Horstman and Deb Lindeman serve as Klemans top coaching assistants. The remainder of the varsity roster has sophomore Chelsey Boecker (5-3 guard), Lexi Wannemacher (5-10 center) and Lindsey Wannemacher (5-10 center). The junior varsity unit has Von Sossan, Landwehr, Lindeman, Boecker, Lexi Wannemacher, Lindsey Wannemacher, freshman Dana Eickholt (5-6 guard), fresh-

man Nicole Kramer (5-6 guard), Madalyn Herman (5-5 sophomore forward/center), Alexa Marlow (5-5 freshman forward) and classmate Carly Kortokrax (5-8 forward). The Lady Green opens 2012-13 at the Van Wert McDonalds Tip-Off Classic on Friday, Nov. 23.

Von Sossan back for more at Jennings helm

We look to be competitive and improve as we gain more experience. We have a chance to score some points if we can guard and rebound; those two areas, if we can do them well, will be a big boost to our chances this season.

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com FORT JENNINGS John Von Sossan has coached a lot of years in the Fort Jennings boys basketball program, well over 40 at last count. He begins his 27th year at the varsity helm in hopes of adding greatly to his 303 wins and not so much to his 283 losses. He returns five lettermen, including a pair of starters, from last seasons 10-12 edition (3-4 in the Putnam County League) that was beaten in the sectional finals. Back for another go-round as starters are third-year veterans in senior Kurt Warnecke (6-3 forward) and classmate Chad Recker (6-1 forward). Also returning is third-year senior

Brandon Kohli (6-4 center), sophomore Nick Von Sossan (6-0 guard) and classmate Connor Wallenhorst (6-1 forward). We have good chemistry with those five our probable starting five and the new guys. We have decent shooters for our 4-out, 1-in offense, the coach said. We like the ability we have to penetrate and move the ball. Those will be

keys for us. Our sophomores in particular I figure to surprise some people and Kurt is an all-league candidate to me. However, with not a lot of heft in this group of the 11 players on the varsity, none go over 195 pounds rebounding and the defensive end are concerns for the long-time mentor.

Those two areas are things we have to work on constantly, as well as cutting down on turnovers. We have a lack of quickness in our role players and that worries me, he continued. With those areas to deal with, Von

Horstman takes over Lady Musketeer cagers

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com FORT JENNINGS Kevin Horstman served as the Fort Jennings girls basketball junior varsity coach and elsewhere within the program for 16 seasons for the past several campaigns under head coach Matt Myerholtz. He moves over a seat on the bench for 2012-13 as he takes over the reins for the Lady Musketeers off a 7-14 edition a year ago (2-5 in the Putnam County League). Though his perspective will be different, much will be the same for the Musketeers in the upcoming season. One of those is the lack of height that the Orange and Black have struggled with lately. We dont have a lot of overall height. We also dont have a lot of depth at this point; we appear to be only seven deep to start the season, so developing our sophomores will be a priority, Horstman began. We have a total roster of 19 girls for both varsity and junior varsity. Also, rebounding is a big concern. We hope to be a fast-break team but we need to finish off our defensive stops in order to run. All is not negative for this bunch of Lady Musketeers as they are an overall veteran group from a year ago. We return five letterwinners, led by third-year senior guard Macy Schroeder (5-4; 2nd-Team All-Putnam County League in 2011-12; 10.7 points, 3.5 assists, 3.1 steals, 3.3 boards per game). We return a second starter in senior

Horstman

Von Sossan
(Continued from Page 22) Sossan figures to use some zones in addition to his trademark man-to-man defense to help compensate. Newcomer senior Dylan Eldridge (5-7 guard) looks to provide depth in the back court. Senior Drew Stechschulte (6-3 center), junior Josh Wittler (6-1 forward), junior Nathan German (5-10 forward), junior Logan Sickels (6-3 center) and sophomore Austin Kehres (6-1 forward) are other options up front and on the wing. We look to be competitive and improve as we gain more experience, Von Sossan added. We have a chance to score some points if we can guard and rebound; those two areas, if we can do them well, will be a big boost to our chances this season. Sophomore Tyler Ricker ((5-11 guard) and sophomore Mark Metzger (5-9 guard) will float between varsity and junior varsity. The JV team, headed by Logan Smith, consists of Ricker, Metzger and freshmen Jeremy Smith (5-1 guard), CJ Cummings (5-4 guard), Aaron Neidert (5-7 guard), Kyle Hellman (5-7 forward), Alex Berelsman (5-8 forward), Drew Grone (5-11 forward), Lucas Ricker (5-8 center) and Zach Finn (5-9 center). Todd Bullinger is the varsity assistant. Jennings hosts Arlington Friday, Nov. 30, to open the new season.

(Continued from Page 23) Gabbi German (5-7 post; 5.8 markers, 4.4 caroms), Horstman continued. Our point guard play, with Macy and (junior letterwinner) Ashley (Gable; 5-1 guard; 1.0 counters), should be a strength for us, especially wanting to push the ball. Gabbi is an excellent leader and hard worker in the post for us. Veteran senior Gina Stechschulte (5-10 post; 1.1 points) provides what size the Musketeers have. One other experienced player returns: junior Cassie Lindeman (5-6 wing; 4.1 markers, 3.6 rebounds). Notable losses include 3-year letterwinner Morgan Schroeder (8.3 points, 1.8 assists, 3.2 boards) and 2-year letterwinner Kelsey Von Lehmden (7.7 counters, 4.3 boards). Both were honorable mention in the PCL. Junior Alyssa Schimmoeller (5-5 wing) and classmate Emily Kehres (5-8 post) will be the ones likely to step into the void. Also available to Horstman as both varsity backups and likely junior varsity starters are sophomore Erin Osting

(5-7 post), sophomore Gabby Clippinger (5-6 wing), sophomore Hannah Clay (5-5 wing) and Jenna Calvelage (5-7 sophomore guard). We appear to be highly motivated this season and our chemistry looks good early, Horstman added. We will mostly run a basic motion offense and half-court man defense. Favorite in the PCL should be Ottoville. We hope to compete to finish in the upper half of the league. Assisting Horstman at the varsity level is Andrea Mead. The junior varsity team, headed up by coach Bill Calvelage, has Osting, Clippinger, Clay, Jenna Calvelage, junior Min Metcalfe (5-2 wing), junior Kelsey Klausing (5-2 post), sophomore Keri Eickholt (5-4 guard), sophomore Alyssa Louth (5-5 wing), freshman Madison Grote (5-5 wing), freshman Kylie Jettinghoff (5-5 wing), freshman Kasidy Klausing (5-6 guard) and classmate Jessica Young (5-6 post). Fort Jennings opens the season Friday, Nov. 23, at home versus Perry.

New coach, same game plan for Lincolnview boys

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com RURAL MIDDLE POINT Though long-time assistant Brett Hammons has replaced Rob Welch as the head coach of the Lincolnview boys basketball unit, the game plan remains the same for the 201213 edition as they finished 11-11 a year ago. We have experience returning at both the guard and post positions; because of that, our guards and posts should be able to get out and run this year. I also feel that we have good depth, Hammons began. Three starters return for the first-year varsity coach: Nick Leeth (5-8 senior guard), senior Kade Carey (6-1 post) and Kyle Williams (5-10 junior guard). As well, three others are back to lend an experienced hand, including some size in 6-3 senior Mark Evans (post), 6-2 senior post Brooks Ludwig and 6-3 junior post Conner McCleery. However, as any coach does this time of year, especially a new one, Hammons has concerns. One is that we need players to step up into new roles this year. The second is we need our post play to develop and get better with scoring and rebounding, he explained. Our style of play is to get out and push the ball and play good man-toman defense. I feel that if the players can continue to buy into the new system we are teaching and continue to be more consistent, we could have a good year. Two newcomers in particular: Justis Dowdy (5-10 sophomore guard) and Eli Farmer (6-1 junior post); are likely to replace graduated starters Sloane Whitaker and Clayton Longstreth. As well, senior Angelo Katalenas (5-8

Williamsons Lady Lancers ready for new season

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com

RURAL MIDDLE POINT Dan Williamson has compiled a 13-30 record in two years at the Lincolnview girls basketball helm, including last seasons 6-15 mark (2-7 in the Northwest Conference) that ended at the hands of familiar foe Jefferson in the sectional semifinals. However, with only one main player departing via graduation in Carley Springer, Williamson has high hopes for a quick turnaround in 2012-13. Our biggest strength will be our team speed and athleticism, as well as an experienced lineup with four seniors who have been playing varsity basketball since their freshman year. Our biggest weakness will be our lack of size and ability to guard taller teams, Williamson began. We will try to be very deliberate on offense and limit our turnovers. Likewise, we hope our defense will be able to force turnovers which lead to easy scores. Our goal for this season is to be toward the top of the standings of the NWC. Teams to look out for are Ada, Allen East and Crestview. By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com RURAL MIDDLE POINT Lincolnview head wrestling coach Curtis Miller continues to struggle with numbers in his varsity program. He has had 11 the last two seasons but that has dropped to a mere eight in 20-12-13. With that number, that means that at least six weight classes will be voided in a dual meet and every wrestler will have to do well whenever the Lancers battle in a multi-team invitational.

Fourth-year senior Jaquobe Markward, third-year junior Doug Hicks, third-year junior Josh McKinsey and veterans Alex Rodriguez, Donovan Burdg and Johnathon Jordan are back. Two newcomers account for the final parts of the roster: Jacob Gibson and Braxton Mathews. Assisting Miller in the coaching duties are Kevin Markward (a 2012 graduate and 4-year letterwinner) and Steve Pardon. Statistician is Autumn Proctor. Kortokrax just keeps on going and going ...

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com KALIDA What more can be written about the legendary boys basketball coaching career of Kalidas Richard Kortokrax? The veteran mentor will find out in this, his 53rd year of coaching varsity hardwood and 38th at the helm of the Wildcats. With last years 18-6 edition completed at the hands of Edgerton in the Division IV district finals, including 5-2 in the Putnam County League, he ended up with an 840-329 record (72% winning percentage). However, with the loss of what he terms seven excellent seniors, this years crew will have a decidedly different cast than 2011-12. He must replace long-time varsity players in 6-5 Ben Schroeder (3 years), Drew Stechschulte (6-5; 3 years), Kevan Unverferth (6-0 1/2 guard/forward; 3 years), Austin Roebke (6-3 center; 2 years), Paul Utendorf (5-11 guard; 2 years), Tyler Kortokrax (6-1 forward) and Nathan Kortokrax (6-1 forward). They were all excellent players for me, Kortokrax acknowledged. Their loss leaves quite a challenge for this Members of the Kalida boys basketball team for the 2012-13 season (front row, from left) are Randy Zeller, Devin Kortokrax, years team with no returning starters. LadyCats dependent on aggression, quickness for 2012-13

I feel fortunate that I have a group of kids willing to do whatever is asked of them each day to get better. Summer and Amy have started and played a lot of games over the last couple years and should provide us with strong leadership at the top. By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com KALIDA Adam Hubers Kalida girls basketball unit finished 13-10 last winter, including 4-3 in the Putnam County League, faltering in the district finals to Ottoville. Entering his 11th overall year of coaching and seventh at the school, including his third as head man (22-22 mark), the Defiance College grad has some rebuilding to do with the loss of six letterwinners from last seasons edition of LadyCats. Gone from a year ago are the likes of 3-year veteran and second-team PCL performer Nicole Kaufman (9.8 markers, 6.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists), 2-year and honorable mention PCL Alexis Wurth (5.1, 2.7, .6), 2-year Haley McIntyre (3.1, 4.0 .1), 2-year Brandi Merschman (4.5, 3.9, .1), Kaylyn Verhoff (2.2, 1.1, .3) and Katie Schmitz. Our four seniors we graduated in Nicole, Haley, Brandi and Alexis provided us with a great deal of leadership

that will be missed. Also, Nicole was our leader in every major statistical category, so we are going to need others to step up and fill her shoes, Huber said. Two seniors do return with experience: third-year Summer Holtkamp (5-1 guard/wing; 6.0, 2.3, 1.3, 2.0 thefts; HM PCL) and third-year Amy Smith (5-6 guard/wing/post; 3.3 points, 3.7 caroms). A third: Julia Vandemark (5-3 guard/ wing; 6.3, 2.0, 1.4, 1.5 steals) is likely out for the year due to injury. Other second-year veterans include Kristi Honigfort (5-5 senior wing, 1.0 points), Elizabeth Turnwald (5-8 junior post, 1.6), Jackie Gardner (5-7 sophomore guard/wing, 2.2 markers, 2.3 caroms) and classmate Nicole Recker (5-7 guard/wing). I feel fortunate that I have a group of kids willing to do whatever is asked-

of them each day to get better. Summer and Amy have started and played a lot of games over the last couple years and should provide us with strong leadership at the top, Huber continued. We are quick and athletic on the perimeter with a number of girls who can handle the ball and apply pressure defensively, which is where we will need to hang our hats this season. We are not very tall, so what we lack in size we need to make up for with aggressive defense and pressure on the outside. We also are inconsistent scoring the ball and we need to capitalize on any opportunities we get to score easy points. We also need to take care of the ball and cut down on our turnovers. Top prospects include Kiersten Recker (5-5 junior wing), Nicole Reindel

Every year, you lose players and have to mix in new players; that, along with a competitive schedule, means it will take time to build team chemistry and make a strong run at a league title and the tournament. Because of the competitive schedule we play, we will need the first part of the season to establish a style of play and team chemistry we need to battle for the PCL crown and to do well throughout Northwest Ohio.

speaking captain Austin Horstman (6-4, 216, center; 16 minutes per game, 51% from the field, 8.2 points, 6.0 boards) he will have to do some work to add to his 615-229 mark at Kalida. Expected to take their place in the much-smaller overall Kalida lineup, either as starters or off the pine, are a group of varsity newbies: Cody Mathew (5-11 forward) is the only other senior and captain; junior Adam Langhals (5-8 guard), Randy Zeller (6-2 forward), Andrew Krouse (6-0 center), We strive to play with spirit and pride every year. We dont want to rest on our tradition but build on it, the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall-of-Famer observed. We are dedicated to having another winning season in a number of ways, not only wins and losses but in a positive mental attitude, team chemistry and a work ethic in which everyone is giving their best on a regular basis. We focus on winning humbly and being gentlemen about it, not only on

the court but in life. We have a creed that all players are expected to follow: if your behavior is going to embarrass your church, home, school or personal self, it is wrong; just dont behave that way. Also in the mix is the success of the boys soccer team, which finished the 2011 season in the district finals, slowing down the progression of the teams development. Kortokrax has a time-tested philosophy to deal with all the new faces on this years varsity roster. We expect our captains every year to lead by example and that will be up to our seniors, he added. They are to strive to be the best they can be, both on and off the court. Still, I expect everyone on this team to do the important things: scoring, rebounding, defense. We emphasize the team concept and team effort to strive for another championship season. I realize that sometimes, this is not a popular concept, to emphasize team over individuals, but that is my philosophy. Helping Kortokrax as the main varsity assistants are Rick Kortokrax and Eric Rampe, along with further assistants Bob Gerdeman, Joe Horstman, Gene Stechschulte, Jr., and Scott Unverferth. Scott Schnipke is the junior varsity coach and Chad Ehrsberger the freshmen coach. Kalida is scheduled to commence the 2012-13 season on Saturday, Dec. 1, at Vanlue.

I think we have the ability to be competitive every time we step on the floor to play with our mix of veteran leadership and young enthusiasm but we need to take advantage of every opportunity we have to get better. We are battling through some injuries early in the season but we dont make excuses and expect those that are healthy to contribute when their number is called. At Kalida, we expect to contend in the PCL every year and by the end of the year to be playing our best basketball.

I also look for Leipsic and Continental to have good years with a lot of returning players. I believe we can be right up at the top of the conference as well but as always, there are no nights off in the PCL so we have to be ready to play each and every game. Assistant coaches include Scott Miller (JV), Robb Schultz, Steve Myers, Tony Leaders and Megan Schimmoeller. Kalida commences 2012-13 at home versus Coldwater Friday, Nov. 23.

Grove boys rebuilding around 4 veterans

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com COLUMBUS GROVE Ryan Stechschulte took over the reins of the Columbus Grove boys basketball team from highly-successful mentor Todd Turnwald and took a relatively inexperienced group to a 16-4 regular season, including tying for the Putnam County League title with Lepsic at 6-1 and 7-2 in the Northwest Conference, good for second. With the return of four lettermen, Stechschulte will have to do a little bit of work to keep up that pace in 2012-13. Senior Derek Rieman (6-3 forward) leads the veteran pack, along with senior forward Brady Shafer (6-3), senior guard Collin Grothaus (5-9) and 6-6 junior center Will Vorhees. With the departure of 3-year starter Jordan Travis and 3-year lettermen Connor Kohls and Wade Heffner, plus Dane Stechschulte and 6-5, 280-pounder Blake Neu, some players that were junior varsity last season will need to step up into the limelight for this edition of the Bulldogs to be successful. Among them is senior Blake Hoffman (5-11 guard), senior Clay Diller (6-0 forward), senior Dakota Vogt (6-1 forward), classmate Josh Tussing (5-11 forward), junior Riley Brubaker (6-1 guard) and sophomore Jace Darbyshire (5-8 guard). Serving as assistant coaches are Jon Diller, Kevin Stechschulte and Adam Osterhage. On the junior varsity unit, headed by Eric Maag, are a boatload of sophomores: David Bogart (5-8 guard), Tanner Neu (6-1 forward), Marshall Downing (6-2 forward), Noah Kohls (6-1 for-

New faces abound for Grove girls cagers

COLUMBUS GROVE Chad Ricker finished 10-12 a year ago in his fourth year at the Columbus Grove girls basketball helm, including a 5-4 mark in the Northwest Conference and a 2-5 record in the Putnam County League. With three letterwinners back, he hopes to even up his 35-51 overall mark this season. However, that means he has to replace four letterwinners who used up their eligibility in the Division IV sectionalfinal loss that closed last season: Anna Ricker (13.9 points, 6.0 boards, 2.6 assists, 1.6 steals per game; first-team PCL and NWC, second-team District 8), Nikki Stechschulte (9.5 markers, 7.4 caroms; honorable-mention PCL and NWC), Brooke Brubaker (4.0 counters) and Cece Utendorf (.4). The threesome back for another goround include honorable-mention PCL player Sydney McCluer (sophomore; 5.8 markers, 1.6 boards), senior Breanne Halker (2.6 points) and senior Renee Karhoff (1.7). We will be depending a lot on players getting their first varsity experience this year. We will need to improve our ball-handling to handle pressure defenses and hope that we can develop some consistent shooters, Ricker said. We also need to make rebounding a team emphasis because we do not have a lot of size. That being said, we have a very

Assistant coaches include Matt Myerholtz, Nikki Benroth and Blake Walker. We hope to be competitive in both of our leagues. In the PCL, Ottoville and Leipsic should battle for the top spot, Ricker added. The NWC should be more balanced. I would expect Delphos Jefferson, Allen East and Lima Central Catholic to be among the top teams in the conference but Crestview has a good crew of freshmen coming in and will surprise many teams this year. Grove commences the new campaign on Saturday, Nov. 24, at Lima Senior.

COLUMBUS GROVE Eric Ernie Siefker has been a long-time part of the Columbus Grove wrestling program, serving in various capacities for 16 years. He starts his fifth year as the head man off an 8-3 dual-meet mark in 2011-12. He brings back 11 veterans from the 2011-12 campaign, led by two district qualifiers in senior Brandon Benroth (third year) and third-year junior Brett Sampson. As well, district alternate Adam Johnson (second-year senior) is also back to help Siefker and his crew. Eight more veterans return in hopes of doing well in the Northwest Conference meet and going farther in the tournament, including fourth-year senior Tregg Keysor (6th at Districts), third-year senior Hunter Giesige, third-year junior Alec Gladwell, thirdyear junior Tyler Schroeder, junior Will Selhorst, junior Jonah Shank, sophomore Alex Schaffer and classmate Christian Stechschulte. He will have plenty of options with varsity newcomers in senior Robert Lindeman, senior Kenny Smith, junior Alex Burgei, junior C.J. Bearcat boys a senior-laden crew for 2012-13

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com SPENCERVILLE Spencerville head boys basketball coach Kevin Sensabaugh has built the Bearcats into a solid program in his 10 previous seasons, compiling a 12792 mark. That includes last seasons 15-8 unit, ending 6-3 in the Northwest Conference and earning a sectional title. He returns a handful-plus of veterans from that unit to build the 2012-13 edition around. Three starters return from that team: fourth-year varsity senior Derek Goecke (6-2 forward; 12.6 points, 7.5 boards per game), third-year senior Coleman McCormick (6-2 center; 4.0 markers, 3.5 boards) and thirdyear senior Cole Roberts (5-11 forward; 3.6, 3.3). As well, third-year senior Dominic Corso (6-4 center; 6.0, 4.6) and third-year senior Devon Cook (5-8 guard; 4.4 points, 1.1 assists), along with veteran junior Ben Bowers (5-11 guard; 5.2 markers, 1.9 dimes), lend experienced hands. Pughsley new Lady Bearcat cage coach

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com SPENCERVILLE Katie Kriegs Spencerville girls basketball team won a sectional championship last season, going 10-12 (3-6 in the Northwest Conference). Warren Coach Pugs Pughsley now hopes to build on what she left behind when she returned to her alma mater to coach the LCC girls. This is my first year as head coach of a varsity team. The past 16 years, I have been coaching young men and women in AAU basketball at a high level, Pughsley began. I am excited about our season because of the staff and the players. Our staff includes my assistant coach, Rick Keller and our JV coach Greg Ekis. Our middle school coaches, Bev Wisher and Jason Henline, are preparing our future players and our youth coaches Marci Goecke, Hollie Cook, Norm Koenig and Shane Falke are developing the fundamentals for our younger girls so that they are even more confident in what they are going to accomplish when they get to high school. This years group is paced by two veteran seniors: Abby Freewalt in the post and Alyssa Mulholland on the wing. Last years team won the sectional championship but we lost some key players from that team. Our young players got great experience last year as freshmen and sophomores, he continued. We have three juniors that will have an impact on our season: wing players Karri Purdy and Tori Hardesty and post player Patricia Riley. The strength of our team is the sophomore class because they bring depth to the program. Point guards Schylar Miller and Emilee Meyer both started at times last year and Katie Merriman, Meagan Miller, Amanda Crider, Shania Johnson and Audrey Bowsher all made improvement since the summer. Then our freshmen are going to get great experience this season and may surprise some people. Jacey Grigsby is an explosive wing player, while Caitlyn Propst and Kennedy Sharp play the post. We only have 15 players; nearly everyone

will play in the varsity games while the 10 underclassmen will also have to play in the junior varsity games. We project Schylar, Alyssa and Karri to be our three starting guards, with Patricia and Abby starting down low. We will come off the bench shortly after with Emilee, Amanda and Meagan on the perimeter, with Caitlin and Katie. Shania and Tori will be on the floor soon as well. The coach plans on building around point-guard play. Our key players are Schylar and Emilee because they control everything from the point guard position; Abby and Caitlyn because they have to rebound out of their minds due to our lack of size and Karri; and Amanda and Alyssa because they have to be primary scorers, even though we are asking every player in our top 10 for at least one basket each half. Pughsley has a good handle for his first season. Our strengths are our faith, depth, effort and togetherness, while our weak-

nesses are height, inexperience and fundamental skill level (which is currently being developed into a strength), he added. Our goals are to grow each game and become more of a unit and build something that they are proud of at the end of the season. Our expectations are to win, period! We want to win the Northwest

Conference and go into the tournament and win until we have no games left and that will be our goal EVERY YEAR!!! It has never happened at Spencerville but it will happen soon because we BELIEVE! State in 8! Spencerville begins that quest Saturday, Nov. 24, at home versus Fort Jennings.

Thompson returns 3 from state runner-up squad

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com ELIDA Led by Akron recruit Reggie McAdams and three other seniors, Elida achieved a first in its boys basketball history; a Division II state runner-up finish and completing the season 24-4 (8-1 in the Western Buckeye League). However, that quartet has moved on, leaving seventh-year head coach Denny Thompson (80-61) three letterwinners to build this crew around. Leading the veterans are senior Aric Thompson (6-3 senior guard; 7.8 counters, 2.7 caroms), senior defensive stopper Ebin Statton (6-4 forward; 2.4 points, 4.2 boards) and second-leading scorer in junior Dakota Mathias (6-4 guard; 13.1 counters, 39-of114 on 3s; 4.4 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.8 rejections). Lost from a year ago are McAdams (21.1 counters, 8.0 boards, 3.6 assists, 2.8 blocks), Cory Royster (11.9 points, 9.8 boards), Mike McDonald (5.0 markers, 2.7 assists, 2.1 steals) and Jeremy Newby (3.3 points in 10 games due to injury) from an offense that scored 62.2 points per game and yielded 46.2. Still, Coach Thompson doesnt figure offense to be an issue this year. We shoot the ball very well. I anticipate us being very good in transition and being strong defensively in the half-court in our base man defense, he explained. He does have five players that did get limited varsity time last winter to fill in the gaps for the graduated players: senior David Diller (5-10 senior guard; 4 points in 12 games), senior Trent Long (6-3 forward; 11 games), senior Louis Gray (5-10 guard; 2.0 points in 11 games), junior Max Stambaugh (6-2 forward; .4 in 13 games) and sophomore Austin Allemier (6-1 guard; .9 points in 14 games). Our starting five will be the returning guys and then the other two will be a battle. Dakota is one of the premier players in the area and Aric is one of the best 3-point shooters around (45%), while Ebin is one of the areas top defenders; all three are all-league and even All-State candidates, Coach Thompson continued. Louis and Austin are both much improved and can shoot the basketball; they will surprise some people. I feel we will be good again but in a different way; we lost a lot of offense and length when Reggie and Cory graduated. I normally say we would like to improve on last seasons success and Id take that but our hope is to progress as the year goes on. The schedule is tough with a strong WBL (Ottawa-Glandorf, Bath, Defiance

We need to establish an inside presence with Cory, as well as build some depth. We need to be very effective running our set offense when the transition baskets arent available, he added. The JV team has Wilson, Etzler, juniors Aaron Fay (5-9 guard), James Simpson (5-10 guard), Darius Relford (5-8 guard), Jordan Greeley (5-11 forward) and Trent Cutlip (5-8 guard); and sophomores Adam Purdy (6-0 forward), Garrett Brinkman (5-10 forward), Jesse Guerrero (5-7 guard), Patrick Brockert (6-3 forward), Jamil Johnson (5-10 forward) and Henwin Cuffy (6-2 forward). Billiter, Jenkins seek to restore Lady Dawg roar

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com ELIDA Elidas girls cage team finished 4-17 last season under then-head coach Deb Stetler, including 2-7 in the Western Buckeye League. Co-head coaches and former players Chrissy Billiter and Elise Jenkins hope to restore the Bulldog tradition in 201213. They will do so behind an all-veteran core due to various injuries throughout last winter of senior Osha Owens (guard), senior Ericka Smith (forward), junior Torie McAdams (forward), junior Ericka Kiel (guard/ forward), Kylie Downton (junior guard/forward), Lindsey Hall (junior guard/forward), junior Ashley Lowry (guard), Carly Stetler (junior forward) and classmate Caddisy Slusher (guard), sophomore Sabrina Kline (guard/ forward) and classmate Brett Pauff (guard). Traci Sweary is the junior varsity coach. The Lady Bulldogs start the 2012-13 campaign on Thursday, Nov. 29, at home versus Columbus Grove.

Fraleys crew ready for the pool in 2012-13

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com ELIDA Cheryl Fraley is starting her seventh year as the head coach for the Elida boys and girls swimming units. Returning starters include Glenn McVey, Ian Haidle, Tyler Brickner, Austin Ruble and Tyler McComb for the boys and Alaina Jenkins, Abbey Goodman, Jenny Stringfield, Ashley Radebaugh, Lauren Huffer, Hayley ONeal, Alexis Barnt and Rachel Kerber for the Lady Bulldogs. Promising newcomers include Cory Schoonover for the boys and Kali Cahill, Emma Scannell, Summer Grogg and Mercedes Marmon on the Lady Dawg side. Out of 35 swimmers on the team, I only have 13 returning swimmers, Fraley said. I am excited about the attitude of all the kids on the team. Its hard to have that many new swimmers but with their attitudes and drive to do better, that makes coaching fun. Elida hosts its own tri-meet on Tuesday, Nov. 27, to open the swimming campaign.

Smaller numbers greet Bowers at Elida grappling helm

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com ELIDA Elida wrestling crew had 21 members on its 20-11-12 edition under long-time coach F. Kevin Bowers. This year, he only has 15 wrestlers to choose from as he begins preparations for the 2012-13 campaign. With the football team again making the playoffs, he has had very little time to see his troops in practice action, so he will take his time in instilling the discipline and philosophy he has held over his many years of coaching various sports: team conditioning, strength on and off the mat, especially in the classroom; wrestling with discipline and aggression from start to finish; intelligence on and off the mat; and mental and physical toughness. Back for another campaign are the likes of senior Austin Arbogast (a district placer at 126), in his fourth year on varsity; fourth-year senior Nick Pauff, fourth-year senior Nickoli Sackinger

Deep Lady Cougars team must replace three main contributors

By JIM COX DHI Correspondent jimrosie@roadrunner.com VAN WERT For second-year Van Wert girls basketball coach Lance Moonshower, theres good news and bad news in 2012-13. First the bad news: the three top contributors from last years 13-9 team (6-3 in the Western Buckeye League) -- Alex Morrow (Western Buckeye League 2nd-team ), Molly Gamble (WBL 3rd-team) and Brooke Keber (honorable-mention WBL ) -- have graduated, along with Taylor Doidge. Now the good news: theres plenty of speed, athleticism, depth and defensive ability among the returnees. The 2011-12 Cougars surprised everybody, going 6-3 (4th) in the WBL and 13-9 overall. In the sectional final, they lost a nailbiter to Bryan, 45-42. Gamble, Keber and Morrow took with them 54 percent of the teams points and 51 percent of the rebounds. The athletic Gamble was the teams best perimeter defender (46 steals) and second-high scorer (8.0 ppg). Keber was the top long-range bomber (24-68 -- 35% -from beyond the arc). Morrow (now playing at Lake Superior State) was the leading scorer (12.4), rebounder (8.7) and shot rejector (50 blocks). The two returning starters are 5-10 sophomore Alexis Dowdy (7.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 25 steals) and 5-6 junior point guard Cheyenne Handy (28 steals). Three other returnees who saw a lot of playing time last winter are 5-0 second-year junior point guard Kaitlynn Hall, 5-9 sophomore Erin Morrow (6.2 ppg, 22-66 -- 33% -- on 3-pointers) and third-year 5-9 center Livia Butler, who is the only senior on the roster. Six non-letterwinners who are expected to play important roles on an overall young roster are 5-5 sophomore Riley Jones, 5-4 junior Hannah Hulbert, 5-8 junior Emilie Moonshower, 5-6 sophomore Alexa Dunlap, 5-9 junior Claire Butler and 5-8 junior Jenna Weigle. Van Wert was a strong defensive team last winter but struggled offensively, shooting only 34 percent from the field inside the arc and 28 percent outside it. The Cougs also had more than twice as many turnovers as assists (389181). Coach Moonshower cites scoring in transition and consistent outside shooting as the areas needing improvement this time around. This is going to be an interesting year, said Moonshower. Were losing a lot of production with three senior starters lost to graduation. However, we have some good young players that have the opportunity to step up this year. How well they develop into those roles is going to define how successful we can be as a team. Moonshower expects Bath and Celina to be top WBL contenders this season. Although Bath has far and away the most league championships (17 -- followed by Ottawa-Glandorfs seven), in the last 10 years, every school in the league except Defiance and Kenton has

won or shared at least one title. Van Werts was in 2005-06 and was shared with three other teams. Moonshower, who was a defensive stopper on Van Werts Final Four team of 1986-87, is assisted by Thad Eikenbary (also on Van Werts 1986-87 team) and Rob Adams. The jayvee coaches are Todd Dunlap and Brad Doidge. The middle school coaches are Tom Baer (eighth grade) and Lori McVaigh (seventh grade). Baer and McVaigh are assisted by Pat Jackson, who was also a Cougar in 1986-87. The JV team has junior Shawna Sandy (5-7 center); sophomores Carisa Burgos (5-0 guard), Kelsey Dotson (5-7 forward) and Emily Bair (5-6 guard/forward); and freshmen Alexis Ayers (5-4 guard), Phoebe Eutsler (5-5 guard), Morgan Magowan (5-9 forward), Ali Moreland (5-5 guard), Domonique Grothause (5-3 guard) and Haley Walker (5-8 forward). Van Wert is in its own McDonalds Tip-Off Classic on Friday, Nov. 23.

Froelich seeks to add to Cougar legacy

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com VAN WERT Dave Froelich is starting on his third decade as head coach of the Van Wert boys basketball team. He has a 268-176 mark for the Cougars (409-237 overall) after his Division II Cougars went 15-7 last winter (6-3 in the Western Buckeye League). He must replace four lettermen from that crew of Cougars: Jacob Myers, Reggie Phillips, Joe Moonshower and Chadd Phillips. He has four lettermen to build around, including third-year senior Joey Hurless (6-0 point guard), plus veteran size in senior Nik Wolford (6-4, 205-pound senior post), AJ Smith (6-3 senior guard/forward) and Caleb Markward (6-0 senior guard/wing). Several promising newcomers will bring more size the Cougar court than Froelich has become accustomed to, including Logan Ray (6-6, 210, senior post), Kyle Keber (6-2 junior guard/forward), widebody Matt Bidlack (6-2, 220, junior post), Michael Smelser (5-11 junior

point guard), widebody Elijah Wortman (6-1, 215 junior post), Chris Miller (5-11 junior guard/ wing), Joey Moreland (5-11 junior guard/wing), Connor Holliday (5-11 sophomore guard) and Nick Keber (5-10 sophomore guard). We are looking forward to the challenges that are in store for us. The program continues to make positive strides and is becoming more consistent and competitive as our guys will play hard each and every night, Froelich noted. The players in the entire program have worked in the off-season to become better athletes and basketball players and are anxious to begin the season. The emphasis and focus has been on the individual improvement of skill level and now it is time to bring it all together as a team. We come in to this season with some experience but several holes to fill that will need to work hard to develop over the course of the season. Our team competition for playing time will be intense and we hope to build on that and develop a deep and effective playing rotation. It will take some time for our guys

Allenbaugh anchors Van Wert girl bowlers; boys seeking improvement

By JIM COX DHI Correspondent VAN WERT The Van Wert girls bowling team was a pleasant surprise in 2011-12, finishing 8-5, fifth (out of 14 teams) in the West Ohio High School Bowling Conference, despite being short on experience. This years team seeks to match or exceed that, which could be a challenge. Gone via graduation are Britany Meyers and her second-best average of 159.30, along with Rachel Dettrows third-best 128.95. Fortunately for the Cougars, the leagues 10th-best bowler from last year, Kylie Allenbaugh (171.85, high game of 203) is back to anchor the lineup in her fourth varsity year. Allenbaugh was a district qualifier and first team all-WOHSBC last winter. Other than Allenbaugh, though, the Cougar lineup is a bit short on experience. Seniors Sierra Kesler (128.14 average, 172 high game), Payton Tussing (121.79, 151) and Ashley Buffenbarger (91.09, 131) were varsity rookies last year, as was Celsea Boroff (87.14, 106), now a sophomore. Neither Buffenbarger nor Boroff had ever bowled in an organized league prior to 2011-12. New to the team are sophomore Dayna Gay, freshman Caitlin Ireland and freshman Madison Wannemacher. Ireland and Wannemacher have bowled in youth leagues, while Gay is new to the sport. All eight bowlers are likely to see some varsity action at one point or another but Tussing, Kesler, and Allenbaugh will usually be in the third, fourth and fifth spots, respectively. The first and second positions are up for grabs among Buffenbarger, Boroff, Ireland, Wannemacher and Gay. A teams total score for a match is determined by adding up the pins from 15 games -- 10 individual matches (two by each bowler) -- and five Baker games. In a Baker game, each of five bowlers rolls two frames -- the number

State qualifiers Schalois, Easley lead Cougar boys swim team; Lady Cougs young
By Jim Cox DHI Correspondent jimrosie@roadrunner.com VAN WERT The Van Wert boys swim team will be challenged to match last winters team, which finished first at sectionals and 12th at districts, while advancing a diver and a swimmer to the state meet. Fortunately, that diver (senior Kase Schalois) and that swimmer (junior Eric Easley) are back to lead this years Cougars. Schalois, who is also a strong swimmer, had high finishes in the 1-meter board at the Western Buckeye League meet (2nd), Ayersville sectional (2nd), BGSU district (4th) and state meet (16th). The versatile Easleys top event was the 100-meter backstroke where he finished 12th at state after great performances at the WBL (2nd), sectional (1st), and district (1st). The Cougar boys graduated four good swimmers -- Trey Stemen, AJ Foster, Cody Hanes and Matt Cucciarre. That leaves plenty of challenges and opportunities for returnees, which include junior Adam Jurczyk, junior Daniel Silette, and sophomore Josh Overholt. Coach Kim Clifton has also spotted high potential in some others on the 21-man roster, including junior Jacob Scheidt, sophomore Kory Schlatter, sophomore Spencer Trisel and freshman Cade Fleming. We need for everyone to step up and do their part, said Clifton. We need our top guys to win the big races as well as our second and third men to score. We also need to increase our number of divers and they need to place in the top six at the big meets. It will be important that we condition and avoid shoulder problems, which can be a problem for swimmers, Clifton added. If we work hard, take care of business at practice and always finish strong, great things will happen. You always need to have a goal of finishing in the top half of the league. We also hope to qualify several to the district meet and another trip to state with a male swimmer and/or diver. WBL boys swimming has been totally dominated by Shawnee and Celina. Those two teams have finished in the top two slots every year, with the Indians taking eight titles, the Bulldogs seven. Van Wert has finished out of the top half of the league only four times in 15 seasons. The Cougs top finishes came with third places in 19992000, 2004-05, 2006-07 and 2010-11. Only three letterwinners return for Cougar girls swim team. The good news for Van Wert is that swimmers are many in number. The bad news is that theyre young and inexperienced. Gone via graduation from last years team are the two high scorers, Taylor Grooms and Erin Dingle. The Cougars also graduated two divers -- Gretchen Klinker and Kaylee Meyers -- and two other swimmers -- Brittany Jurczyk and Briana Agler. Last years team was eighth in the Western Buckeye League and second at the Ayersville sectional. The three returning letterwinners are junior Holly Hammon, junior Karlyn Koontz and sophomore Hannah Stemen. For Van Wert to improve on last winters results, coach Clifton will have to see some major improvements from several of the other swimmers on the large roster. She sees promise in many of them, including senior Becca Johnson, junior Andi Foster, sophomore Mackenzie Agler, sophomore Whitney Meyers and sophomore Marissa Sperry. We need to work hard, especially in our weak events, Clifton added. We need to be willing to step up in all events and not just in the same old events. We have gotten stronger and added some promising new swimmers, so who knows what our potential might be. If we keep working hard and finish strong, we will have no regrets. The team goals include a finish in the top half of the WBL meet and to qualify some individuals and a relay team or two to the district meet. Shawnee and Celina have finished 1-2, in that order, in the last 11 WBL meets. The Indians have won 12 of the 15 league championships, Defiance taking the other three. Van Werts highest finishes came with four consecutive third place finishes in 1999-2000, 2000-01, 2001-02 and 2002-03. Clifton is assisted by Angie Stemen, Martha Martin, Keith Rydell and Brendon Moody.

Knight boys have solid mix for Best

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com CONVOY Jeremy Best has put his stamp on the Crestview boys basketball unit, compiling a 166-139 mark in 14 years at the Knights helm. However, his team has to replace four key performers from last winters 16-6 edition (6-3 in the Northwest Conference) that lost to St. Henry in the Division IV district semifinal. Lettermen Nick Adam (3 years), Dallis Gibson (3 years), Kole Rolsten (3 years) and Matt Holden departed after last seasons final game. Leading the way for this years crew is third-year senior big man Josh Ream (6-6, 285-pound center), along with veteran senior guard Alec Heffner (5-11, 175), junior Tyson Bolenbaugh (6-4, 175, forward), Damian Helm (6-3, 175; junior guard) and junior point guard Cam Etzler (5-10, 170). Damian and Cameron especially are potential all-league type of players, Best noted. He is looking forward to three promising newcomers to varsity in particular: senior guard Alex Brown (5-11, 165), junior guard Isaiah Simerman (6-0,

We really like the dynamics of this team. It isnt the most talented team weve had here at Crestview but they are a very competitive bunch. Rickard seeks to keep right on moving for Crestview girls

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com CONVOY Long-time Crestview girls basketball coach Greg Rickard has seen an awful lot in his 22 years at the helm of the Lady Knights. He has built up a 343-147 career mark, His Lady Knights finished 12-9 last winter (6-3 in the Northwest Conference) and lost in their first game of the Division IV sectional tournament. Last years crew was experienced but had very little height. However, four of those 3-year letterwinners (and starters last season) are gone: Danica Hicks (8.1 points, 4.4 boards, 2.3 assists), Mackenzie Richard (3.1 counters), Catelyn Mefferd (3.3 markers) and Madison Etzler (3 games played due to injury). Because of injuries to a couple of front-liners, Rickard brings back three starters: third-year junior Kirstin Hicks (5-7 forward/center; 2.6 markers), sophomore Lindsey Motycka (5-7 guard/forward; 8.0 markers, 5.4 boards) and classmate Mackenzie Rigginbach (5-5 guard; 7.8 counters). As well, lone senior Mariah Henry (5-6 guard/forward; 2.4 points) and sophomore Kennis Mercer (5-6 guard;

1.4) are back for the long-time coach. He has two promising newcomers that will give the Lady Knights more size: sophomore Terra Crowle (5-8 guard/forward) and freshman Emily Bauer (5-9 center/forward). What we should do well is rebound and play good defense. What we need to work on now and into the season is consistent shooting and keeping turnovers down, Rickard said. If we play consistent basketball with great effort, we should be able to compete with anyone on our schedule. Also on the varsity roster is 5-5 junior guard Courtney Grote and 5-7 sophomore forward Megan Hartman. On the junior varsity is Grote, Hartman, 5-6 sophomore guard/forward Reghan Waltmire; and freshmen Hannah Bowen (5-6 guard/forward), Brady Guest (5-6 forward/center), Jada Preston (5-5 guard), Danielle Ray (5-10 center), Leslie Skelton (5-5 guard), Kenadie Speith (5-5 guard) and Claire Zaleski (5-5 guard). Assistant coaches are Trent Kreischer, Diane Wilson and Meghan Henry. Crestview opens 2012-13 versus Wayne Trace on Friday, Nov. 23, at the Van Wert McDonalds Tip-Off Classic.

What we should do well is rebound and play good defense. What we need to work on now and into the season is consistent shooting and keeping turnovers down. If we play consistent basketball with great effort, we should be able to compete with anyone on our schedule.

to develop. The same old strengths that have marked the Cougars units of the last several seasons remain. The complexion of our team will be speed and quickness with players who are versatile enough to play fast both inside and out. Our intent early is to push the tempo and create some easy scoring opportunities, Froelich added. We hope to have the ability to score from all five spots on the floor and to be strong and consistent from the perimeter as we groom the inside attack. Our versatility should make for some tough matchups by using depth, quickness and toughness. An important area of emphasis will be our team defense and our ability to rebound It is vital that we have a great understanding of how to play defense and then make the effort to rebound the ball so we can get out and run. We play a very tough schedule both league and non-league and there may be times that teams are more talented but we hope to play together and work harder in order to find a way to win each night. As you watch this team play and develop over the course of a long season, you will see a great group of kids who like each other and who will play hard and give it their best effort every second of every game. Van Wert hosts its own Tip-Off Classic sponsored by Van Wert County Hospital on Friday, Nov. 30, taking on Crestview.

Bowlers
(Continued from Page 40)
one bowler handling frames 1 and 6, number two bowler frames 2 and 7, etc. I see our strengths being the seniors, said coach Tracey Allenbaugh. These four girls can control the teams attitude and how we attack the lanes every week. They know how to stay focused and bowl when they need to. All in all, I would say working as a team will be something that will keep us as surprising underdogs to look out for this season. Coach Allenbaugh expects last years top four teams -- Coldwater, St. Marys, Wapakoneta and Versailles -- to again set the pace, as they have in recent years. Van Wert has a history of good girls bowling teams, having never finished out of the top half of the league. The Cougars won regular-season championships in 2001-02, 2002-03, and 2004-05 (shared with Wapakoneta). St. Henry and Celina have withdrawn from the league, replaced by Russia and Temple Christian. My goals are to have a winning season overall, qualify more than one girl to districts, have someone, if not more, qualify for state, and have a very fun and learning season, added Coach Allenbaugh. On the boys side, the team is looking to improve from an off year. With its tradition of good bowling teams, Van Werts 6-9 record (10th out of 16 teams in the WOHSBC) was an off year. It was only the second time in the history of the conference that the Cougs were not in the top half. Although top bowler, Trent Metzger (189.30 average, 251 high game, first team all-WOHSBC) has graduated, coach Tammy Metzger is counting on several experienced rollers to pick up the pace and improve the teams standing in 2012-13. Back are junior Tyrell Eddins (168.08, 214), junior Jason Zosh (159.12, 203), sophomore Jacob Blackmore (155.60, 189) and junior Andrew Price (147.68, 216). A promising newcomer, senior Alex Chorvas, gives the Cougars a solid fivesome. Metzer is also expecting sophomore Tyler Ruger, sophomore Darin Hofacker and freshman Joey Kinner to compete for one of the five varsity slots some weeks. Coach Metzger sees improved spare shooting as the key to success this winter and, with that, some much-improved averages and a move up in the conference standings. Last year Van Wert had a team average of 811 and a Baker average of 159.4. Wapakoneta is the defending WOHSBC champion with a 15-0 record. Wapak and Coldwater have consistently been among the top teams in the league. Van Wert has had some high finishes -- 4th in 2010-11, 4th in 2009-10, 3rd in 2008-09 and 3rd in 2007-08. Ty Metzger and Mike Zosh are helping Coach Metzger teach technique during the teams practice sessions. Fans can follow the teams progress and individual stats at http:// wohsbc.com.
