Super Saturdays, Courses & Events with the Bert Sheppard Scout Reserve Winter 2013

Discover SCUBA December 13, 2012 February 21, March 21, April 18, May 16 2013 Take the chance to experience breathing underwater with this Introduction to Scuba Diving session. For youth and adults ages 10 years old and older head on down to The Dive Shop in Calgary for a 2 hour lesson on how to get involved in scuba. An instructor will provide all the equipment and instruction to guide you through the underwater world in the shops own dive tank. If interested, ask about a PADI scuba course in the spring, this might be a good way to see if you are interested in becoming certified diver. Please note: We are offering 1 session on Thursday evenings each month from November till May. Place: The Dive Shop, 4652 MacLeod Trail Time: 6:00 pm 8:00 pm Fee: $30.00 per person Climbing February 10, 2013 (this is a Sunday event) Bring your Cubs, Scouts or Venturers to the University of Calgary Outdoor Centre for a few hours of indoor climbing instruction. This could be a great primer to get ready for trying some outdoor climbing. If you have youth with climbing experience already just let the centre know and they will be happy to help them with some more advanced skills. Place: University of Calgary Outdoor Centre Time: 12:00 2:00 pm Fee: $23.00 per person without shoes. Clean running shoes will work but if you would like to rent shoes for this event there is an extra cost of $6.00 per person, please pay for the shoe rental at the centre on day of event. Wildlife Tracking Workshop February 16, 2013 Have you ever seen an animal track in the snow or mud and wondered who made that? Or perhaps wondered where that animal was going and what it was doing? Join Bryan Hunt for an afternoon tracking wildlife in one of Calgarys newest provincial parks. For Cub Scouts, Scouts and Venturer Scout sections. Place: Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park, meet in the main parking lot Time: 1:00 4:00 pm Fee: $33.00 for youth, $45.50 for adults

Reptiles Up Close March 2, 2013 Join us for a chance to see and interact with some reptiles up close and personal at Camp Gardner. Come and learn about a number of different snakes, lizards, iguanas and other reptiles both native and non native species. This event is great for all sections and particularly Beaver Scouts and Cub Scouts. Place: Collicut Lodge, Camp Gardner Time: 3:00 pm 5:00 pm Fee: $22.00 per person. Nordic Ski Fun Day - March 16, 2013 Want to do some cross country skiing on a variety of winter trail? All sections are welcome to come out to the West Bragg Creek ski and snowshoe trails for a day of learning and exploring. We will start off with a lesson on getting going on skis and then try out some easy and more challenging trails in the area. We will meet at Camp Gardner then carpool to the trails in Bragg Creek. Groups will need to provide there own ski equipment and rentals can be done at Sports Rent on 16 Ave your way out to camp. Place: West Bragg Creek Ski Trails, meet at Camp Gardner parking lot first. Time: 1:00 pm 4:00 pm Fee: $8.00 + rental equipment to be picked up before the trip. From Sports Rent ski package for Adults is $17.00 per day, for Youth $11.00 per day. Please pay for rental equipment fee at Sports Rent. Sports Rent is an easy stop on the way out to camp, they are located at 4424 16th Ave NW Calgary

Outdoor Cooking April 20, 2013 Camp cooking is a big part of any camping trip. If you and your Sr. Cubs and Scouts would like to learn some different techniques for preparing a meal using hot coals, open fires and stoves come out to Gardner for the day to try some new recipes and to get some new ideas for your next campout. Please come on an empty stomach and enjoy some good eats. If you know of any food allergies in your group, please let us know at time of registration. Place: Camp Gardner, Nature Centre Fire Pit Time: 10:00 am 2:00 pm Fee: $14.00 per person

Wilderness Bushcraft & Primitive Living Skills April 27, 2013 Finding basic human needs in the wilderness can take some skill and knowledge. Are you interested in learning about how to build natural shelters using only what you find in the forest? How about building and starting a fire using different techniques other than striking a match? Learn about natural resources found close by to make simple tools like cordage and a tripod. Scout and older sections are welcome to attend this event. Check out this session and try your hand at some of these skills. Please bring a lunch and snacks for the day and dress appropriately for the weather as you will be outside all day. Place: Camp Gardner, meet in the main parking lot Time: 9:00 am 4:00 pm Fee: $8.00 per person Caring for Albertas Hwy May 11, 2013 Cubs, Scouts and Ventures come on out to Camp Gardner for the day and help clean up the highway in front of camp as part of the Caring for Albertas Highways program. This is a great opportunity for those youth looking for service hours toward chief scout, queen vent or duke of ed. Cubs must be a minimum 8 years old. A fire pit will be available afterward so bring along your lunch and enjoy a campfire. Place: Camp Gardner, please meet up in the main parking lot Time: 10:00 am 2:00 pm Aboriginal Spirituality Traditional Sweat Lodge Ceremony - In February 2013 Camp Gardner is proud to introduce monthly sweat lodge ceremonies. This First Nation ceremony is for men and women 18 years and over to experience First Nation songs, prayers and ways of knowing. Elders, healers and ceremonialist from various First Nations will provide a different focus each month. There are only 8 spots each month so please call to reserve your spot.
