Fun at the beach
High school student arranges
trip for those less fortunate
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Marlton Sun
Getting to area beaches is a
short trip for Marlton residents.
However, for the less fortunate,
leaving the city limits can be a
rare occurrence.
Taylore Shea, a student at Bish-
op Eustace High School and Marl-
ton resident, holds a strong con-
nection to the small beach town of
Sea Isle City located in Cape May
County.
Ive been going there since I
was little. I wanted to incorporate
the beach with giving back, said
Shea.
Shea had always enjoyed serv-
ice projects done through school
or other local organizations, but
wanted to create a project of her
own.
She contacted Sacred Heart
Church, located in Camden,
which assisted her in finding kids
interested in visiting the beach.
I realized that [Sea Isle City] is
vacation for most people, and not
everyone gets to experience the
fun at the beach, said Shea. I
had been trying to initiate a serv-
ice project for quite some time,
and then I realized this is what I
wanted to do. Most of the kids
had never even been to the beach
before, and they were ecstatic
about all the fun activities we
were going to do.
Tim Schenk of Sacred Heart
organized the children.
I had led some beach trips in
the past. I work at the front desk
in the summer, and Taylore ap-
proached me, wanting to do a trip.
I got the students together who
wanted to go on the trip, said
Schenk.
Kids in grades kindergarten
through eighth grade were able to
make the 70-mile journey using
funds raised by Shea.
Shea sent letters to neighbors,
family members and friends to
donate the money needed for the
trip. Additionally, she placed do-
nation cans in various businesses
in the area.
I contacted both the public
and private sectors to obtain do-
nations needed for the project. We
needed shade tents, boogie
boards, buckets and shovels,
beach tags, continental break-
fasts, lunches, snacks, water, ice
cream, fudge, t-shirts, printing,
and a shell ornament for a beach
memory with Sea Isle and the
year written on it, said Shea
Upon arriving in Sea Isle, Shea
had shore-related activities set up
for the kids.
They had everything taken
care of. It was amazing what they
had for the children. She was
very focused on our kids, said
Schenk.
I contacted the chamber of
commerce, and they directed me
to an educational beach combing
activity. After they ate, we did
beach combing where a volunteer
from Sea Isle City taught the kids
about different kinds of shells
and animals of the Jersey Shore.
Then the kids got to walk around

Cookies with Santa is in December
Maria's Mom's Italian Cookie
Cupboard will be holding its 5th
annual "Cookies with Santa"
event during the month of De-
cember.
On Saturday, Dec. 8, Dec. 15,
and Dec. 22, from noon until 3
p.m., families will be able to visit
with Santa at Maria's Mom's
Marlton bakery. Each family sees
Santa privately, and children re-
ceive a complimentary home
made cookie. Parents are encour-
aged to bring their cameras.
"The kids really like visiting
with Santa in his Winter Wonder-
land," says Maria Ritter, owner of
Maria's Mom's. "Parents do too.
We've had quite a few return visi-
tors since we opened the bakery.
It's become our Christmas tradi-
tion."
Maria's Mom's has been fea-
tured on NBC10's The 10! Show,
Comcast's Best of the City, and has
been named Best Bakery by both
SJ and South Jersey Magazines.
Some of Maria's signature
cookies include anisette, raspber-
ry filled, potato chip, and lemon
sprinkle. This year, Maria's co-
conut macaroons were featured
in the swag bags at the Daytime
Emmy Awards in Los Angeles,
and the Sports Emmy's in New
York City.
After Ritter's mother recovered
from cancer, the family decided
not to wait until Christmas to
bake their traditional cookies, but
to make them year-round. The
popularity of their cookies led
them to open the bakery in 2008,
where they make not only cook-
ies, but pound cakes, Italian pies,
biscotti, cannoli, and seasonal
specialties.
All of Maria's Mom's products
are baked daily, using fresh ingre-
dients and no preservatives.
Maria's Mom's Italian Cookie
Cupboard is located at 13 North
Locust Avenue in Marlton.
"Christmas is the reason we're
here, so this time of year is espe-
cially important to us," says Rit-
ter. "We're trying to give some-
thing back to the community."

A
lot of things impact the econo-
my, perception perhaps being
one of the greatest influences.
We often hear about consumer confi-
dence and why it is essential to get
things moving in the right direction.
When consumers feel secure in their
job and finances, they are more likely
to open their wallets and spend more.
The added dollars help the economy.
A couple of weeks ago, the New Jer-
sey Business & Industry Association
announced that business confidence in
sales, employment and profits has
climbed to a five-year high. According
to a press release, almost one in five
businesses responding to the groups
annual fall survey anticipate hiring
more workers in 2013. When you sub-
tract the percentage of businesses an-
ticipating job cuts, the net percentage
of companies anticipating the need to
hire additional workers is 8 percent,
the highest in five years.
To put it into more perspective, the
percentage of confident companies in
2005 was 19. In 2009, it was a minus 3.
Now, we have to point out that the
survey took place about a month be-
fore Hurricane Sandy so there proba-
bly is some sentiment change. The bil-
lions of dollars in damage from the
storm no doubt hurt the economy.
But the overall positive business sen-
timent is reason to rejoice.
If the survey is accurate, more peo-
ple will be purchasing goods and serv-
ices next year. Businesses will be mak-
ing more money, and, in turn, will be
hiring more people to get the job done.
Good news such as this has been a
long time coming. Clearly, the economy
isnt zipping along as it was back in the
aforementioned 2005. But it also is
showing a lot of signs of life. More
businesses saying they feel good about
their future is a really big sign.
So let the holiday season carry on.
Its off to a great start. More jobs and a
stronger economy no doubt are on the
holiday wish lists of many residents
this year.
in our opinion
Confidence builds
News that more businesses are confident about the future should be celebrated
Back in business
News that businesses in New Jersey
are feeling more confident in their
futures and anticipate hiring more peo-
ple next year is the holiday gift a great
number of residents wanted.
Guardian Hour of Power Lunch Seminar is Dec. 12
Licensed Public Adjuster Virginia Bor-
delon will be the featured speaker at the
next Guardian Hour of Power Lunch
Seminar scheduled for Wednesday, Dec.
12.
Bordelon, who works with Metro Public
Adjustment, experienced hurricanes Betsy,
Camille and Katrina both personally and
professionally as a resident of New Or-
leans and she will address these and other
insurance-related issues in her presenta-
tion Lets Get Proactive!
The seminar, sponsored by Guardian
Settlement Agents, one of the states lead-
ing title agencies serving all of New Jer-
seys 21 counties, will begin at noon on
Wednesday, Dec. 12 at Guardians South
Jersey headquarters located at 1000 Lin-
coln Drive East, Suite Two, in Marlton.
Lunch will be served and there is no charge
to attend.
To register for the seminar, contact
Guardian Settlement Agents President
Drew Whipple at (856) 985-9007 or by email
at awhipple@goguardianinsurance.com.
Using the services of a public adjuster
to help prepare a home for sale is an inno-
vative way for real estate professionals to
get maximum value for their clients, said
Guardian CEO Christopher J. Brown. We
provide valuable information such as this
free of charge every month in our Hour of
Power informational seminar series.
A public adjuster is a professional con-
sultant, licensed by a states Department of
Insurance, who works on behalf of the
homeowner, not the insurance company, to
secure the true repair value for property
damage. In many cases, this damage may
qualify for reimbursement under the
homeowners policy.
Bordelon will explain how public adjust-
ment firms help homeowners receive funds
to repair physical damage, eyesores or cos-
metic impairments to facilitate a faster,
more profitable home sale. Usually, the
homeowner is either unaware of such
claims or unable to present them properly,
but a public adjuster is qualified to profes-
sionally handle claims to maximize the fi-
nancial settlement.

Participating high schools, in co-
operation with BCC administra-
tion and faculty, determine the
courses, taught in the high
school, that qualify for this pro-
gram. To enroll in the program, a
student must be approved by
their guidance counselor, or prin-
cipal, to enroll in a C.A.P. class of-
fered at their school.
These courses are equal to BCC
credit, and students receive a
BCC transcript for completed
courses when they receive a
grade of a C or higher. Students
can then apply to transfer these
credits to the college they will be
attending.
The cost of classes are deter-
mined every year. During the
2011-2012 school year the cost was
$125 for a three- or four-credit
class, $250 for a six- or eight-credit
class.
In the district, 40 percent of
classes are comparable to college
level courses, according to Heilig.
Superintendent of schools, Dr.
Carol L. Birnbohm, initiated the
program in 2010 while serving as
assistant superintendent.
At Cherokee High School, the
top classes include pre-calculus,
honors U.S. history I and II, prob-
ability and statistics, and Spanish
I and II.
A total of 358 students are en-
rolled in the program. There is an
average of 6.71 credits per student
earned.
Parents save money. Its a good
opportunity for students and
their families, said Heilig. Its
grown. Its been successful.
In other news: John Glyn, mar-
keting director of Whole Foods
Markets presented a check for
$694 to the district.

through the program, Nickels for
Non-profits.
Every reusable bag a cus-
tomer brings into the store saves
a nickel, said Glyn. We then ask
customers to donate that nickel to
the cause.
The customer service employ-
ees chose LRHSDs Transitional
Services Program to spotlight
their assistance to students. Addi-
tionally, the program allowed
them to directly help fellow em-
ployee, Michael Capella.
Hes really become a part of
the Whole Foods family, said
Glyn. It was decided by the cus-
tomer service staff, that through
working with Michael, they had a
chance to do more. They did so,
through this program.
The staff at Whole Foods is
currently planning to run anoth-
er Nickels for Non-profit
fundraiser to donate directly to
the district.
This was one of the first time
[employees] could help a fellow
Whole Foods employee, and they
want to do it again, said Glyn.
Following the presentation, the
board of education passed a reso-
lution honoring Evesham repre-
sentative Barry Fitzgerald, who
was recently unseated during the
November election, for his servic-
es to the district.
The resolution declared
Fitzgerald a valued partner and
an advocate for childrens educa-
tion for the LRHSD.
To say youre an advocate is
an understatement, said Birn-
bohm. Youre an enthusiast.
Regular action was taken on
the agenda.
The next LRHSD board of edu-
cation will not hold a meeting in
December. The next meeting will
be held Jan. 2 for reorganization,
beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the dis-
trict building located at 93 Willow
Grove Rd. in Shamong.

the beach to look for shells and we
talked about their findings,
said Shea.
Additionally, members of the
Sea Isle City Beach Patrol provid-
ed the kids instruction on beach
safety before they entered the
water boogie boarding, swim-
ming and playing on the beach.
Taylore really had devoted at-
tention to the students. She was-
nt just doing this for them, she
was doing it with them. She
played in the sand, went in the
water and boogie boarded with
them. It was great, said Schenk.
The children were also given T-
shirts, fudge, an ornament, a col-
oring book and a beach ball, all of
which were provided by dona-
tions, according to Shea.
One kid told me they had the
best day of their life. It really feels
great to give back to the commu-
nity, said Shea.
The kids felt like they were
part of something. They were so
excited on the way home, and
were all sharing and talking
about their favorite part of the
day, said Schenk. The day really
brought out the excitement.
Shea plans to continue the proj-
ect, and to show kids the beach.
I would love to continue this
program and make it even larger.
Hopefully my act of service will
inspire others to do the same. Al-
though I already knew I was
blessed and I was helping others,
I didn't realize I was impacting
someone elses life through a sim-
ple act of inviting them to the
beach, said Shea.
Despite the destruction of Hur-
ricane Sandy, there are still plans
to head back to the beach this
summer.
We definitely plan to, said
Schenk. We definitely plan to go.
Theres nothing on our end keep-
ing us from going.
So far, there has been no word
from Cape May County or Sea Isle
City whether beaches will be
closed this summer.

Preparing for a Victorian Christ-

took weeks to prepare for Christ-
mas. There were fruitcakes and
cookies to be baked and Christ-
mas pudding was made on Stir
Up Sunday (the last Sunday
before the season of Advent) plus
gifts to be wrapped. There was
excitement in the air thinking
about decorating the home and
Christmas tree. Before store
bought glass ornaments the tree
was decorated with fruit, toys,
small gifts, and homemade deco-
rations. Today we will sip on tea
and make an old time decoration
or two for your Christmas tree.
Some supplies will be available.
