Tiny Tumblers
for pre-school and youth, ages 3-8, with disabilities Marion Diehl Recreation Center, 2219 Tyvola Road January 14 - February 18th (Mondays) * no class January 21st * 5:30 - 6:30 pm Stacey.Thomas@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov Abigail.Bergman@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov Tiny Tumblers is a fun and positive introduction to gross motor skills. The weekly classes will develop confidence and build strength, balance, and flexibility. Your child will make new friends while enjoying pre-school and youth gymnastics equipment, obstacle courses and various teaching aids.

Schools Out Club for Youth


for kids, ages 6-12, with disabilities Marion Diehl Rec. All of these activities are used to promote peer interaction and appropriate social skills, physical activity, and independence.

During the 4 sessions, children will have fun with their friends and work with their parents to develop basic sports skills as well as have fun with basic social games and activities. Karate
for pre-school and youth, ages 3-8, with disabilities. Marion Diehl Recreation Center, 2219 Tyvola Road January 4 March 22 (Fridays) * no class Jan 18th, Feb 15th, Feb 22nd, and March 15th * 5:00 6:00 pm Cost: $75 (includes cost of karate uniform) Stacey.Thomas@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov This program is geared to introduce karate to children and incorporate appropriate training for their age and abilities. Participants will work on listening, cooperation, balance, safety and beginner karate skills while being challenged and encouraged to succeed.

Youth, Teen and Community Programs


Challenger Basketball for youth and teens, ages 6-21, with disabilities Marion Diehl Recreation Center, 2219 Tyvola Road January 8 February 12 (Tuesdays) 6:00 7:00 pm $45 Stacey.Thomas@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov Participants will learn the fundamental skills and drills needed to play basketball. Participants will learn to dribble the ball with either hand, proper ball handling, shooting techniques and good sportsmanship.

Summit Parent/Caregiver Group


Mahlon Adams Pavilion at Freedom Park, 2435 Cumberland Ave., 28205 January 15 (Tuesday) Note 3rd Tuesday 7:00 8:00 p.m. FREE Karen.Howard@mecklenburgcountync.gov A monthly group for parents, guardians, and caregivers that is facilitated by a Therapeutic Recreation staff person but is directed by the group members. This FREE informal group gives participants the opportunity to meet and talk with other parents and caregivers who are experiencing the challenges of parenting a child, teen or young adult with a disability. In January, we will receive information from Ryan Platt of A Special Needs Plan please join us at our special location for this informative presentation!

Beyond the Book will allow individuals an opportunity to gain a new leisure skill or enhance their current leisure interest of reading, while meeting new people in the community in a casual setting. With input from the group we will pick an appropriate book to read followed by a group discussion. We will relate topics from the book to life, relationships, values and other topics of interest to you.

Spill Your Beans provides the opportunity for young women to talk about and gain support for issues theyre facing in their lives, such as health & safety, independent living, relationships, friendships, and self-esteem (participants will have the opportunity to choose the topics to learn about). Each month we will host a guest speaker or lead a discussion about issues that are important to you.

Fuel for Life

Fuel for Life provides the opportunity for young men to talk about and gain support for issues theyre facing in their lives. Each month we will host guest speakers and discuss different topics, such as employment and job skills, relationships, life goals and values, and other topics that are important to you.

Band of Brothers

Come hang out with "Band of Brothers" every Tuesday night from 6-8pm. You can practice social skills, meet new people, enjoy community outings and develop positive relationships, all while enjoying some "guy time".

For teens and young adults age 13-35 with disabilities Meet at Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center, 800 E. Howies Cafe
for adults, ages 18 and up with disabilities Marion Diehl Recreation Center, 2219 Tyvola Road January 12 February 9 (Saturdays) 10:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. $75.00 Karen.Howard@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov Welcome to Howie's Cafe, where you are the chefs! Adult participants with developmental disabilities will improve or master basic cooking skills, with an emphasis on attractive food presentation and restaurant-style table serving. Additional skills taught will include kitchen safety and hygiene; making healthy food choices; and proper food handling and storage practices. Fees for this 5-week class include all materials and food.

Creative Arts
for adults and seniors, ages 18 and up with disabilities Marion Diehl Recreation Center, 2219 Tyvola Road January 7 February 25 (Mondays) No class on January 21 10:00 a.m. 12:00 noon $70.00 for 7-week class Karen.Howard@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov Break out the brushes, paints, clay and much more! Spend Monday mornings expressing yourself through a variety of art media: painting, sculpture, collage and pottery, to name a few. All materials are included in the program fee.

Gifted Gardeners
for adults, ages 18 and up with developmental disabilities Marion Diehl Recreation Center, 2219 Tyvola Road January 8 February 26 (Tuesdays) 10:00 a.m. 12:00 noon $80.00 for 8-week class Karen.Howard@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov Gardening class in winter? YES! Theres plenty to do in the winter garden, including composting and soil improvement; starting seedlings for spring vegetables, flowers and herbs; caring for houseplants; and crafting items using plant materials. All equipment and supplies are provided.

Dance & Fitness
