Version B Version A
I prepared two versions of sketches of Arrivals hall. Version A describes the normal situation of Arrivals hall in an airport excluding people. On the other hand, in Arrivals hall in Version B, my design idea is implemented. All parts of the idea are described here; the touch-pad screens on the fences, the big projected screen on the wall, and people around those new facilities show possible using scenarios. What I planned to do at this workshop was to; (1) Introduce my new interaction vision to the group members. (2) Give them Version A and let them brainstrom and sketch on it; design ideas which they think t the interaction vision. (3) Let them briey explain their ideas. (4) Show them Version B and explain my idea. (5) Discuss. So my intention was to inspire my group members and myself to come up with ideas by providing a large but also largely empty sketch of the situation (Arrivals hall). I thought the discussion session could be more useful and eective by letting other members brainstorming and generating ideas by themselves before discussion.

Amit brought sheets of paper to the workshop. Illustrations of several kinds of hairstyles, top clothes, and musical instruments are printed on the paper sheets. He briely explained his design goal and a new interaction vision and let us play with these sheets, try some combinations [Picture1], and tell what we thought about it. Below are some comments we came up with after trying Amits design prototype. 1. Its missing the reason a person needs to take an action to appreciate another persons taste. Why would people do that? 2. An association between a certain icon and a certain genre of music needs to be stronger. The illustrations now are somehow weak to represent ones taste of music. (They are more like fashion tastes.) 3. There needs to be a connection between actions of making avatar and interacting with others. Amit was thinking of interacting in a digital way (i.e. through mobile app) but we suggested immediate, direct interaction be more powerful.
Amit made it clear that he wanted to keep the core goals of this idea, which are time-illing at the coffee corner and expressing a taste of music. Then we together started generating ideas based on that. An idea we reached at the end was about making a musical band with others on the table using coffee cups[Picture2]. One can take a paper-cup with a picture of a musical instrument which represents his music taste on and join a table with other people also with cups. Each table might stand for a certain genre of music. In this way, its possible to interact directly and have a conversation on the spot. I hope Amit soon tests his avatar idea or this a band on a table idea and see either works in a real situation and its his interaction vision. Im looking forward to seeing the result!
