Opening Credits Analysis / Post-apocalyptic convention ideas we can incorporate in our production 12 Monkeys directed by Terry Gilliam Narrative

Hooks

Opening text indicating what happened / the cause of the outbreak Ours will have the similar idea -While his horse started galloping, he bends his bow in order to spread PESTILENCE From the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse Green indicates some kind of disease The excerpt text gives the quote evidence of the cause of the outbreak factual

-Red indicates danger or warning - Monkeys: an allusion to the green text saying animals will rule the world -Music throughout the opening sounds like music used when dancing tango; it is very whimsical but almost eerie at the same time. This depicts the descent of a man into madness

Doomsday directed by Neil Marshall Narrative Hook -Newspaper article indicating cause of outbreak - The opening shows documentaries of people with the disease shows severity - The first minute is black and white which only shows reference to death people who died from outbreak -The next minute we see it coloured ; shows people who are alive, running away from the virus -Voice over gives us a more insight on what and how the virus affected the people. Also gives more emotional depth

The Last Man of Earth directed by Ubaldo Ragona Narrative Hook -Montages of desolated city, fields etc *we will incorporate this idea in our film opening -shots show isolation; retrospect to the title Last Man of Earth -montage includes dead bodies. This could show another disease taking over or there could be some unknown entities killing them. The fact that we dont know why theyre dead is a narrative hook -music is again very eerie and has a sense of suspense which is very common in a post apocalyptic film as to show that theres no hope and the ruthlessness of the outbreak - we see a man who wakes up and does seemingly a usual morning routine. This could mean that hed been living the same way during the outbreak. Why hes the only one left is another narrative hook. Knowing directed by Alex Proyas Narrative Hook -black background containing the title dissolves into a shot of the sun and the sky. Although backwards i.e. instead of darkness covering the light (eclipse), this could still indicate a foreshadowing of evil or an apocalypse -We hear whispers (non-diegetic sounds) this could mean an unknown entity causing havoc in the world - The girl has a very unusual behaviour, not typically would be seen someone her age. The whispers seem like they are meant for her which means she has a connection to these unknown entities
