BALFOUR BEATTY CONSTRUCTION – THE STREETS OF BUCKHEAD

project, Ben Carter Properties says. “The Streets of Buckhead

will completely transform nine acres situated along world-
famous Peachtree Road, surrounded by some of the nation’s
wealthiest neighborhoods,” the company declares.

Phases of Buckhead
Balfour Beatty’s work on Streets of Buckhead encompasses the
entire first phase of the development, Macon says. The initial
phase, he explains, includes the construction at three separate
parcels of land.
Parcel A includes 215,000 square feet of retail space and
320,000 square feet of underground parking with 900 spaces.
Parcel B will consist of 60,000 square feet of retail space and
an 80-foot high bell and clock tower, while the third, Parcel
C, includes 117,000 square feet of retail.
In addition, Balfour Beatty will construct 150,000 square feet of
below-grade parking and 420,000 square feet of above-grade park-
ing at Parcel C, which forms the podium structure for two 13-story
apartment towers (with a total of 400 units) that have been pro-
posed by homebuilder Wood Partners. “Balfour Beatty is under
consideration for the residential tower award,” Macon reports.

Increased Awareness

Streets of Buckhead is also aiming for LEED certification,
Macon adds. While the project is being built on a Brownfield
site, Balfour has worked closely with Ben Carter Properties
and the State of Georgia Environmental Protection Division.
Balfour Beatty Construction also has focused on using local
materials within 500 miles of the job site as part of the
LEED initiative.
Macon notes that he personally worked on a project five years
ago that was the first LEED Gold office building project in
the Southeastern United States. “It’s come a long way since then,”
he says, explaining that awareness of green practices has
increased in the construction world.
“Everybody’s just a lot more knowledgeable about the process
than five years ago,” he says. “Knowing is half the battle.”

Strong Support
Currently, Pritchett says, Balfour Beatty is 40 to 45 percent com-
plete on Phase I of the Streets of Buckhead. The company has
maintained the schedule while assisting Ben Carter Properties
with various program changes, he says.
However, locals have been very supportive of the project,
which is expected to revitalize the area. “[The Buckhead area] got
