Cristian Rodriguez October 29,2012 AP US History Period 5 American Revolution DBQ The early stages and the aftermath

of the American Revolution set tone to a new uprising nation. After obtaining independence from Great Britain, American society demanded immediate change at no cost. From 1775-1800, American society changed dramatically. It changed when the people began to view a common enemy, the rise of feminism, and when the people began to rely on their self-government. The American Revolution gave an end result of viewing a common enemy. In Madisons The Federalist portrays the British Government as abusive (Doc.I). By James Madison portraying the British as abusive gives them a reason why the colonists should separate from their rule if they are going to oppress them. Thomas Paines Common Sense inclusively tries to convince the public that its logic to separate from a tyrannical rule that the British held within the colonies. His book as a result influenced patriotic pride and convinced them to take up arms against the Red Coat Army. The Pennsylvania Packet of 1779 attempts to make the Red Coat Army seem a threat to American Independence (Doc.B).By having the British Army represented as a threat to their independence, the people should consider in taking severe and extreme measures in order to protect it. Another outcome of the revolution was the rise of feminism. As the United States began to develop, the traditional patriarchal society as well began to emerge. However, many women stood up and began demanding equal rights and privileges men had like Molly Wallace when she addressed this to the Young Ladies Academy (Doc.J).Women speaking up demanding equal rights was rare in society because they were viewed to be simple maids of their homes. During the revolution, many women boycotted British goods as a form of protest such as the Daughters of Liberty and helped support the patriots by supplying them with clothing, food, etc. women involved in the revolution demonstrated that they can support and help gain independence hence their limitations. Women in addition took arms against the Red Coat Army (Doc.A). Women taking up arms in warfare contradicts the traditional view of a household subjects; furthermore demonstrates that females have strength to fight in war like men do. American society became more reliant on their self-government. Before obtaining independence, all the colonies met in Philadelphia concerning the war between them and Britain, also known as the Second Continental Congress. By the colonies gathering, they created an army and a navy in which they depended on in order to obtain independence.

In the Medal of the Philadelphia society for the Promotion of Agriculture of 1786 makes reference to the high value farming had in society (Doc.F). Separating from British rule meant no supplies from their behalf and had to become more reliant on their own crops in order to maintain a stabilize economy. The American Revolution had a very positive effect in American society. The view of a common enemy, the rise of feminism, and reliance on self-government helped shape a solid and unified nation. As future encumbrances emerged, the U.S has been able to become more mature and aware of new solutions to different problems.
