set up a $70,000 discretionary fund to pay for a host of political causes and
environmentalists are going to Canberra today to protest against the Fed
Govt climate change policy with anyone taking part having the fare paid by
the council if they declare themselves supporters of Climate Change Balmain
Roselle. Delaney reports that the Telegraph says the transport is organised
by Greenpeace but the Council says it was told the protesters are a local
group and not 'lawbreaking types'.Delaney says this is apparently the first
time ever a Govt of any variety has openly and blatantly broken the
convention of not using public money for party political purposes. Delaney
notes Govts use money for advertising, which he calls a grey area, but he
asks what benefit there is in this for the ratepayers of leichhardt. None, he
says. Delaney asks what next and calls for it to be stopped.

the first sitting of Federal Parliament for 2009. Damien Lawson, organiser of
the Climate Action Summit and spokesman for Friends of the Earth, says that
people across the country have convened to discuss the next moves for the
climate movement. Lawson says the last few years has seen remarkable
achievements, including the end of the Howard Govt, the success of former
US Vice-President Al Gore, the election of US President Barack Obama and
growing awareness of climate change. Lawson says that many climate and
environment non-government organisations were 'caught off-guard' by the
change in Fed Govt, and Lawson says that more needs to be done to lobby
the new Govt. Lawson says that he believes the Emissions Trading Scheme
should be delayed until after the Copenhagen Conference. Lawson speaks
about the presence of the Australian Conservation Foundation and the World
Wildlife Fund at the Climate Action Summit.
