Task 4

ICP Media (Publisher on NME) Second-largest UK consumer publisher, with about 22% of the market (lost prime position to Bauer, which took over Emap in 2008). Locked in battle with Bauer (Emap) for leadership of men's and women's weekly markets. Has history page. In November 2009, the company underwent a restructuring, with just three divisions covering men, mass-market women and upmarket women. In April 2010, it set out to review its 80 specialist titles, which was seen as a forerunner to selling some smaller titles. Four months later, it sold the iconic lad's magazine Loaded to Vitality Publishing, publisher of gay lifestyle title Attitude, though doubts were raised as to whether Vitality had the resources to revive the struggling lads' mag. Other titles IPC sold included: Cage & Aviary Bird, Aeroplane, MiniWorld, Ships Monthly and Park Home & Holiday Caravan to Kelsey; Classic Boat to Chelsea;. Late 2006 and early 2007 saw a focus on websites: Now; whatsontv.co.uk; Instyle; a homes portal, www.housetohome.co.uk to add to three existing homes websites based on specific titles; and the appointment of several digital executives. IPC was formed in the 1960s by the merger of Britain's three largest magazine publishers: Newnes, Odhams and Amalgamated. It was known as the 'Ministry of Magazines' but its core weekly titles - including Woman, Woman's Own and Tit-Bits - saw big sales declines in the late 1950s and again in the 1970s, with steady declines inbetween and since. For example, Woman fell from almost 3m sales a week in 1958 to a tenth of that in 2010. I believe ICP media would be a good publisher for my magazine because it has lots of experience with music magazines but does not have one that specializes in UK rap although there may be lots of competition from the other music magazines such as NME.

Time Inc. (Publisher of Vibe) Vibe is a music and entertainment magazine founded by producer Quincy Jones. The publication predominantly features R&B and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers. After shutting down production in Summer 2009, Vibe was purchased by the

private equity investment fund InterMedia Partners and is now issued every-other month with double covers, with a larger online presence. The magazine's target demographic is predominantly young, urban followers of hip-hop culture Time Inc. is a subsidiary of the media conglomerate Time Warner, the company formed by the 1990 merger of the original Time Inc. and Warner Communications. It publishes 130 magazines, most notably its namesake, Time. Other magazines include Sports Illustrated, Fortune, People, InStyle, Life, GOLF Magazine, Southern Living, Essence, This Old House, All You and Entertainment Weekly. It also owns the UK magazine house IPC Media, whose major titles include What's On TV, NME,Country Life, Marie Claire and Nuts. Time Inc. also owns the rights to LIFE, a well known magazine that has been published in many different formats. Time Inc I believe Time inc. would make a suitable publisher as it has a lot of experience and has other rap magazines but they mainly focus on American rappers so there is still lots of room for a UK rap magazine as there is little competition
