Five to Watch in 2013
Brad Keselowskis against-all-odds run to the
Sprint Cup championship breathed new life into
a Sprint Cup Series landscape in which no one
other than Jimmie Johnson or Tony Stewart had
won a championship in seven years.
The championship gives Keselowski, 28, a status that cant be
bought or promoted. He wasnt merely the champion. He became
NASCARs man to watch.
There will be others, if for no other reason than because 2013
will be a new year. Everyone knows that Keselowski, Johnson and
Stewart -- not to mention Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle
Busch, Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth and the rest -- will play
major roles in the next season.
Who else will the cameras favor?
CLINT BOWYER
Surprise! It was Bowyer, not Johnson, who finished second to
Keselowski. The two are similarly personable and, at times, simi-
larly controversial. Bowyer will undoubtedly be a popular dark
horse when predictions are made regarding 2013.
CARL EDWARDS
Three times (2005, 08, and 11) Edwards contended for cham-
pionships. In each case, he slumped the following year. In each
case, he came back part of the way the next season and made a title
run the third. If the pattern holds, hell make the Chase again next
year.
RICKY STENHOUSE JR.
Stenhouse, with two
Nationwide Series champion-
ships in tow, is well prepared
for the big time. Replacing
Kenseth at Roush Fenway isnt
going to be easy. He will prob-
ably have his struggles, but
few would be surprised to see
him in victory lane.
JOEY LOGANO
Five years ago, the betting
line would have favored
Logano to win a championship
ahead of Keselowski. Now, at
the well-seasoned age of 22,
Logano is Keselowskis team-
mate, and the plan is for the
two to give Roger Penske a
cohesive team as well as a
title.
DANICA PATRICK
The evidence suggests she
is far from ready to be a com-
petitive force in Sprint Cup,
but the money is there and she
has a full-time Cup ride team-
ing with Stewart and Ryan
Newman. Shes getting better,
but the learning curve has to
accelerate quickly.

(c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc
Three times now, Carl Edwards has contended for the championship
one season only to slump the next. If the pattern holds true, hell be one
to watch in 2013. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo)

USAC Dirt Midget Association, Josh Harrington/Wells River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupe, Adam Pierson/Bond
Auto Parts DIRTcar Sportsman Modified, Dawn King/Hornet Queen, Michael Phelps/Hornet Stinger.
Bear Ridge Speedway Hosts Awards Banquet
Bear Ridge Speedway honored the champions
from its 45th Anniversary Season of dirt track
stock car racing on Saturday, December 2. More
than 370 drivers, crew members, sponsors, fans,
and officials filled a sold-out banquet hall at the
Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee for the gala, and
more than $25,000 in prizes and point fund
purses was awarded.
Adam Pierson, of East Corinth, headlined the
guest list as the Bond Auto Parts DIRTcar
Sportsman Modified Champion. Pierson, 28,
collected his eighth title in just 12 years of racing
at Bear Ridge Speedway. Pierson posted two
wins and 14 top-five finishes in 19 races for his
third consecutive Modified crown. Kevin
Chaffee, of Fairlee, was the runner-up, followed
by Gary Siemons of Orford, NH. Eddie Patterson
of Websterville won the Rookie of the Year
title.
Josh Harrington, of Topsham, was honored as
the Wells River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupe
champion for the third time in four years after a
three-win season. Terry Williams of Wells River
finished second ahead of Bradfords Jason
Horniak. Jesse Smith of Topsham was Rookie of
the Year.
Two-time feature winner Scott Holcomb, of
North Granby, CT, collected his first USAC Dirt
Midget Association title in the divisions second
year. Holcomb edged Joe Krawiec of Bristol, CT
and multi-division star Chaffee for the crown.
Jeffrey Champagne of Westfield, MA was the
Rookie of the Year.
Fifteen year-old sensation Jordan Fornwalt, of
Bradford, was named the A Notch Above
Automotive Limited Late Model champion after
a dominant 13-win season. Mike Greene, Jr., of
North Haverhill, NH, Brian Chaffee of West
Topsham, and Rookie of the Year Sam Comeau
of Hebron, NH were next.
Danny Doyle, of Barre, took his second
Weglarz Property Service Fast Four champion-
ship with a six-win campaign, and was joined at
the banquet by his two-week-old daughter Chloe.
Chuck Simmons of Bradford was second, fol-
lowed by Tim Martin of White River Junction.
Groton driver Eric Langs 13 victories netted
him the KDD NAPA Auto Parts Hornet title for
the second straight year. Rookie of the Year
Brandon Gray was the runner-up.
Dawn King of Springfield was crowned the
Hornet Queen champion over Alicia Taylor of
Moultonboro, NH and Ashley Racine of St.
Johnsbury. Michael Phelps of South Ryegate
took the Hornet Stinger youth division title over
Leah McGinley of East Barre and Geoff Durphey
of Springfield.
Special awards were given in several catego-
ries, headlined by the prestigious John Poor
Memorial Award, given annually to one driver
from each of the Modified and Coupe divisions.

Preliminary Reports Indicate Slight Rise in
Number of Deer Harvested During Rifle Season
Preliminary reports received from 140 agents throughout
Vermont indicate this years rifle season harvest total is slightly
higher than the average for the previous three years, according to
the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department.
As of December 4, 2012, with numbers still coming in, it was
reported that hunters harvested 4,897 deer during the November
rifle season. The average harvest as of this date for the previous
three years was 4,867 deer. Final numbers will be tallied after all
reports have been turned in and the information has been reviewed
for accuracy.
Archery harvest totals are also up slightly to 2,915, compared
with an average of 2,484 deer reported on the same date over the
last three years. Results for youth weekend are still being tallied,
but appear to be at or above the previous three year average.
Vermonts whitetail population is healthy, and the antler restriction
that started in 2005 has resulted in more numerous and older bucks
in the deer population.
Hunters this year saw the benefits of managing for deer herd
health, said Adam Murkowski, deer biologist for the Vermont
Fish & Wildlife Department. Preliminary analysis has shown that
not only are more deer being harvested this year but the physical
condition of these deer is indicative of a healthy and robust popu-
lation.
Harvest results will not be complete until all agents send in their
reports after the muzzleloader and second archery seasons end on
December 9.
A detailed annual deer harvest report will be available on the
departments website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com) by early
March. You can read previous reports on the department website
under Hunting and Trapping, by clicking on Big Game and
then on Big Game Harvest Reports. The reports contain infor-
mation hunters need to understand the health of their deer herd and
provides information on making informed harvest decisions.
Hunters shouldnt stop thinking about deer just because
Vermonts hunting seasons are coming to a close, added
Murkowski. Hunters wishing to know what steps they can take to
improve the areas they hunt for deer should visit the departments
website and the Big Game Harvest Report for more information
on deer herd management.
Hunters continue to provide the means for managing Vermonts
white-tailed deer populations across the state. Post-hunt deer den-
sities in most regions of the state remain at levels within manage-
ment objectives set in Vermonts big game plan for 20102020,
which is also available on the departments website.
There are regions in the state where some people feel there are
either too many or too few deer. Deer management will always be
a balancing act and require a continuous series of corrections to
keep Vermonts deer populations abundant, but not overabundant,
for all Vermonters to enjoy now and in the future. Vermonts
annual deer hunt yields more than 800,000 pounds of local, nutri-
tious venison worth millions of dollars in food value alone.
Squier Wins Prestigious
NASCAR Award
Thunder Road co-owner and founder Ken
Squier received the prestigious Buddy
Shuman Award during the 2012 NASCAR
NMP Myers Brothers Award Luncheon in
Las Vegas, NV. The award is given to an
individual who has played a key role in the
continued growth and success of Cup rac-
ing.
Ken helped bring not only a voice, but
also a face, to Cup racing, said Michael
Proud, director of marketing for Federal-Mogul who sponsored
the award. During every race there are dozens of drivers out there
battling for track position. He was the first to bring those drivers
personalities into the race coverage. That was a huge step that
helped make the sport much more accessible for millions of
fans.
The owner of Radio Vermont and former CBS broadcaster was
the 56th winner of the Buddy Shuman award. The award is in
memory of former NASCAR Grand National driver and chief
technical inspector Louis Grier Buddy Shuman, who passed
away in a hotel fire in 1955.
It is such an honor to receive an award like this, said Squier.
That was really something. I didnt expect it.
Squier is a popular figure in the motor racing world. He is well
know for deeming the Daytona 500 The Great American Race,
and has played a key role in many motorsports innovations such
as the in-car camera, as well as convincing CBS to cover the
Daytona 500 beginning in 1979.
The track Squier built at age 21, Thunder Road, now enters its
52nd year of operation. Squier was also the co-founder of the
Motor Racing Network, which is now entering its 34th.
John Poor was an important official at Bear Ridge Speedway for
many years and the award bearing his name is given to drivers
who elevate the sport of stock car racing through exceptional con-
duct on and off the track. Troy Comeau was awarded the John
Poor Memorial trophy in the Modified division, with Tim Hodge
taking the honors in the Coupe division.
Hodge was also the recipient of the Raymond Brown Memorial
Award in the Coupe division for performance on the track and
conduct in the pit area. Bob Shepard of West Topsham won the
award in the Modifieds, with honors also going to Brian Chaffee
in the Limited Late Models, Steve Bell in the Fast Fours, and Mike
Lique of West Lebanon, NH in the Hornets.
Josh Sunn and car owner Gary Corsi of Woodstock were named
co-winners of the Modified divisions annual Sportsmanship
Award. Teddy Salomaa of Bradford won similar honors in the
Coupe division, as did USAC Midget champion Scott Holcomb,
Late Model racer Brian Chaffee, Fast Four driver Steve Bell, and
Hornet racer Mike Lique.
Race fans voted Troy Comeau as the Most Popular Driver in the
Modified division. Similar honors went to Jeremy Beckley of
Woodsville, NH in the Coupes, Kevin Chaffee in the Midgets,
Sam Comeau in the Late Models, Danny Doyle in the Fast Fours,
and rookie James Fadden of Plainfield, NH in the Hornets.
The Big Als Photos What A Picture Hard Luck Awards were
given to Modified driver Bob Shepard, Coupe rookie Jesse Smith,
Midget veteran Scott Viets of Granby, CT, Late Model driver Matt
Ellsworth of Corinth, Fast Four driver Bobby Bell of St. Johnsbury,
and Hornet rookie Ryan Farnham of Fairlee.
Adam Pierson was given the Twin State Ford Lap Leader Award
for the Modified division with rookie Thomas Placey of Bradford
taking the honors in the Coupe class. Joe Krawiec won the award
in the Midget division, with Late Model champion Jordan
Fornwalt, Fast Four veteran Steve Bell, and Hornet champion Eric
Lang also leading the most laps in their respective divisions.
More than 70 prizes were given to racers by random draw; the
top prize was a brand new General Motors 602 crate racing
engine valued at nearly $3,000 and provided by Miller Auto Group
of Lebanon, NH, which was given to Coupe driver Teddy
Salomaa.
Bear Ridge Speedways 45th season of stock car racing is now
officially complete. The 2013 season begins on Saturday, May 4,
2013. Visit www.bearridgespeedway.com or call (802) 222-4052
