Continuous Steam Injection

Heat, from steam injected into a heavy-oil reservoir reduces the viscosity of oil and increases its mobility thus making it easier for the steam to push the oil through the formation toward production wells.

PAB1042 UTP 2010

Cyclic Steam Injection

Steam injected into a well in a heavy-oil reservoir introduces heat that, coupled with alternate soak periods, thins the oil allowing it to be produced through the same well. This process may be repeated until production falls below a profitable level.

Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage

Steam injected from the top horizontal well creates a distillation chamber and the reduced viscosity oil drained downward by gravity within this chamber towards bottom horizontal well.

In-Situ Combustion
In an in-situ combustion process, the formation is ignited, and by continued injection of air a combustion front is advanced through the reservoir. Mobility of oil is increased by reduced viscosity caused by heat and solution of combustion gases. And oil can easily flow towards production wells.

Immiscible Gas Injection

Gas is injected below minimum miscible pressure such that it sweeps the oil in front of it towards the production wells. This process can also be used to mitigate permanently the CO2 produced from Power Plants.

PAB1042 UTP 2010

Miscible Gas Injection

Gas is injected above Minimum Miscible Pressure such that gas becomes miscible in oil in the formation. Viscosity of oil is reduced providing more efficient miscible displacement.

Water Alternating Gas Injection

Gas and water are injected alternating helping to correct displacement front and resulting higher recovery.

PAB1042 UTP 2010

Chemical Injection
EOR method in this category may include surfactant, polymer and alkaline injection. After a reservoir is conditioned by water preflush, specific chemicals are injected to reduce interfacial tension (help release oil) and/or improve mobility control (reduce channeling). This action is followed by injecting a driving fluid (water) to move chemicals and resulting oil bank to production wells.
