Much has happened during the year 2012. The common man has seen, heard and experienced a lot during the past 366 days, enough to last him a lifetime. He has seen the ugly face of power politics and bowed down his head in embarrassment as one scam after another exploded. He saw huge sums of money being siphoned off by ministers and political heads when contracts were drawn up hand in glove with corporate India, and stashed away in opulent banks in richer countries. He witnessed favours being doled out to relatives of powers that be, ministers riding piggyback on the differently-abled and callously making money on them, unabashed political leaders roping in staff like drivers and maids as directors of companies floated by them, ministers threatening women in public, fights in the parliament, honour killings by khap panchayats, rape and molestation of young women across the country including the infamous incident in one of the nations prestigious law colleges, sexual abuse of staff in premier management institute, murders of RTI activists, persecution of girls for expressing their views through the social media, suicides of youth in prestigious educational institutions.......the list is endless. There has been enough grist for the media to sensationalise and glamorise. The television channels vied with one another claiming to be the first to break the news, gave away innumerable awards eulogizing oft projected socialites, corporate honchos, stars and also creating new icons in the guise of a social agenda; one channel went to the extent of tapping the conscience of the citizens taking up the social cause a little too seriously and then stopped abruptly as the anchor- star became busy with his career pursuits.... the media has had an eventful year and made the moolah.... The bewildered aam aadmi or the mango man/woman as the new nomenclature addresses him continues to grapple with the ceaseless turmoil which assails him. He carries on his battle against price rise, fuel hike, power (less) problems, contaminated water, garbage accumulation, new constraints imposed on LPG, skyrocketing real estate prices, loss of near and dear due to accidents thanks to the plight of our roads and traffic indiscipline..... this list is endless too. But the worst ever problem is universal corruption. The youth of the country are fortunate to live in an era where they can get what they want including bikes ( free petrol), mobile, food and drink of their choice, exciting avenues of entertainment, partying all fully funded, unconditionally by parents. Promiscuity, which is coming to be accepted as the norm is the added bonanza. But it is also tearing apart the fabric of cohesive family units in the form of break ups, divorces, psychological issues, loss of productive years, violence, murders etc. The masses continue to languish in poverty. Women persist doing backbreaking work, contend with alcoholic husbands and sons, abuse, gender biases, deprivation of opportunities for education and a life of dignity and respect. But the good news is that progress is happening too. New trends are coming up. Progressive young minds are ushering in innovation and change, setting up new enterprises. There has been a sprouting of the social consciousness, especially among the youth. The need for Change has come to be accepted. There is an aura of youthfulness and hope everywhere. A few optimists like us believe that this change will eventually catch up and bring back honour and dignity to the nation. We will live in a country free of corruption, where all citizens will have equal opportunities and will be treated with equal respect. We will live in peace and harmony. The Best is yet to come....... Ciao!

It is heartening to know Indian culture is in safe hands. Despite being busy, women, whether working or homemaker take the effort to celebrate festivals with fervour. It is the reality we see around us, though not often discussed or dealt with. While we are transitioning to a global era, we should ensure that our children are not affected by the cultures and customs they emulate from other countries. Multiple dating is something which must be discouraged by all institutions that deal with children and young adults. Schools, the media and family must play a role in educating our children about the emotional consequences of multiple dating. over seventy thousand students globally.

Which was your first choreographed song and how you get it?

What role does Dance as a performing art play in your life?

It is the reason for my existence, my gift and my mission. Whether it is singing, performing or choreographing; each aspect of the performing arts completes me. Not only does it give me peace but it also helps align my mind, body and soul. For me, it is a complete Sole to Soul experience. When and how did you realize your passion for dance and how did choreography come to be your profession?

My first venture into choreography for Bollywood films was Dil To Pagal Hai. Shah Rukh (Khan)s wife Gauri used to dance with me. Both of them insisted that I meet Yash uncle for his new movie and he was looking for a choreographer like me. I was very sceptical as my style was too western for Bollywood. On meeting Yash uncle he was convinced that he needed me for the movie and placed complete faith in me. I went on to win a national award for the movie! How did SD academy start? When I took up dancing, I was also made to realize the power of performing arts to heal and the importance of sharing it with others. So over twenty years back, I started Shiamak Davars Institute for Performing Arts (now, Shiamak Davar International India Pvt. Ltd.) with just seven students, five of whom were family and friends. It was started with an inspiration to help people disconnect from their worries and just let go through dance movement.

Where I do feel reality shows are a brilliant platform for people from across the country to showcase their talent and get instant recognition, I also do believe that just being a good dancer doesnt make one a choreographer. There is little knowledge of technique, barely any training and there are pieces picked up from the internet; I dont think this is justice to the art form. One must be original and bring out their soul through their ability, and I think the viewers are now very well versed and can gauge this ability. Most of the choreographers are directing movies; are we going to see your name being added to the list?

I have in fact been looking forward to directing a movie but past commitments have delayed the process.Yes, you will see me donning the hat of a director very soon! What would you advise to upcoming choreographers or dancers? What do you think are the plus points of young choreographers/ dancers? What are their drawbacks?

Performing arts was in my blood since childhood. I always participated in plays and musicals though at that time I considered singing as the meaning of my existence! I would perform in my living room for my family and friends all the time! Dance happened much later and with master classes abroad, I realized my talent for dance. But it was through the guidance of my spiritual guides, the Bhavnagiris, I understood that dance was my gift and I had to share it with the world. The time you decided to take up dance as a profession was not encouraging to young men like you. We heard your mother stood by you. Please recount the difficult times you had when you decided to take up dance as a profession, your mothers support as well as what gave you the courage and determination to go forward.

What is your niche when it comes to choreographing?

I have always insisted on originality. Thats why today my work is very me. People often watch it and say, this is so Shiamak! So now I just call it Shiamak Style which is a blend of indo contemporary and modern movement with an emphasis on technique. Even for Bollywood, there are lots of jazz elements, there is a structure accompanied by the grandeur of sets, props and costumes. For the latest rage hip hop, I have my own style, Shabop that adds ethnicity to the movements.

Like I said, they need to primarily find out their niche, their ability and their talent. This needs to reflect through the originality in their work. One must be constantly inspired, ready to try different things. Also, as a choreographer they must first train themselves, have complete knowledge, training and technique to be equipped to pass it on to others. There is no substitute for hard work, dedication and commitment to the art. Are you associated with any social activity? Through dance how do you reach out to fulfil your social responsibilities?

I come from a family of educationists, so I completed my studies and found support from my parents to take up dance professionally. The time when I started off, dance was not acceptable, especially for men. Moreover, I brought in the western jazz style which was completely alien to people here. Not only was I constantly judged, but people coming to the dance class were also scorned upon for wearing tight clothes. My parents stood by me like my pillars of strength and as the word spread about the quality of work that I was doing, I didnt even realize when the school grew from seven students to now,
10

Could you share one of the most memorable dancing experiences with us?

There are many! Performing for Bill Clinton, Richard Gere, at the World Economic Forum (Davos) and Commonwealth Games are all memorable experiences. More recently choreographing for the Hollywood blockbuster Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol was an incredible experience. Do you think dancing reality shows are becoming an easy step for upcoming choreographers to join Bollywood?

In 2004, I started my own not for profit organization, Victory Arts Foundation (VAF) that uses dance as therapy and reaches out to populations including the lesser privileged, HIV/ AIDS affected and those with special needs, without discrimination. They perform at various shows with me, and are real examples of how dance can really heal.

If you had not evolved as a choreographer, what would you have been today?

Singing, acting, dancing, directing! Doing something related to performing arts!

Hailing from South India, a majority of the band members studied in the prestigious Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. This is where the vocalist Harish and the percussionist Ganesh met each other and started off with short jamming sessions as a way to pursue their passion for music. The duo stuck to the tradition that started out in college even after graduation.

oung minds think out of the box. And from one such eureka experience sprung Agam, a Bangalore based Contemporary Carnatic progressive rock band. Agam is a forerunner in this genre of music.

Ooh la la la Moment
Launched in 2006, Agam received its big break in the year 2007 when it participated in a band hunt called Ooh la la la, hosted by the Tamil television channel Sun TV. The judge of the contest was none other than A.R. Rahman. The maestro was impressed by the bands potential and adjudged them one of the winners of the contest. Agams success in Ooh la la la brought them to the mainstream, and the band, thus, started performing in concerts and music festivals in Bangalore, Chennai, and Hyderabad.

A Different Style
Agams musical style is Carnatic Progressive Rock. Their music is a holistic blend of both Carnatic music and rock that gives birth to a completely new kind of sound. The fact that the band is based out of the culturally rich and highly receptive Bangalore works in their favor. Agam draws inspirations from Traditional Carnatic music and progressive rock acts like Dream Theater.

Garnering a Fistful of Musical Space

Post-2010, Agam started gaining more popularity nationwide and started playing in many popular and high profile music festivals such as the Chennai Sangamam, the MAD Festival the Fireflies Festival, Octoberfest, and the Storm Festival. The band is also a favourite at venues such as Hard Rock Caf, both at Hyderabad and Bangalore, and Kyra, Bangalore Apart from these, Agam

Excerpts from an interview with Agamthe Band-

Q Q

Why Carnatic Progressive rock?

How was Agam formed?

Agams musical journey started in 2006, in an apartment studio where Harish and Ganesh, whose friendship dates back to early college days, started experimenting with various compositions of music under the name Studio F6. In 2007, Agam was born. The current line-up features Harish on the vocals, Praveen on the lead guitars, Jagadish on the Rhythm guitars, Vignesh on the bass guitar, Ganesh on the drums, Swamy on the keyboards and Sivakumar on the ethnic percussions.

Our first real success was winning a music reality show on television by legendary musician A R Rahman. We played with the idea of transforming the traditionally-rooted music form, Carnatic, into something more contemporary, which eventually gave rise to a brand new genre -- Carnatic Progressive Rock. This time our music appealed to both the conservative Carnatic lovers and the head banging crowds.

biggest crowd-pleaser tracks Rudra and Boat Song and not to forget Malhar Jam that also featured in second season of Coke Studio at MTV. Our Launch happened on 11 October 2012 in Hard Rock Cafe, Bangalore, and we had two of the biggest names in Independent music grace the occasion and launch our music - Indian Ocean and Swarathma.

Q Q Q

Apart from the live scene, is Agam planning on more platforms?

Tell us more about the Album Launch

Who are Agams sources of Inspiration?

Dream Theatre, Iron Maiden, Opeth, Baiju Dharmajan, AR Rahman, Indian Ocean, Shakthi, Sivamani and the Holy Trinity of Carnatic Music.

The debut album called The Inner Self Awakens features 6 tracks - each one reflective of the varied musical influences that the individual musicians bring in. For the album, the band roped in multi-award winning producer, Ashish Manchanda, whose body of work includes the likes of AR Rahman, Amit Trivedi and bands like Avial. The soundscape of the album is diverse and versatile, with the musical spectrum ranging from traditional Vedic hymns to progressive rock/metal. The album also features a bold experiment - a track called Swans of Saraswathi which is a progressive rock/metal treatment of a traditional Carnatic classical composition. The song assimilates the essence of raga Hamsanadham and the complex, intricate time signature changes inherent to progressive rock, to produce a sound which the band believes is unique and a first of its kind. The album also features two of their

We already do mainstream / commercial works including background scores, jingles, theatre and music under the label Studio F6. This helps us reach out to a different segment of audience. We are also looking forward to an opportunity to score music for movies.

Whats next in the agenda? Any plans of going international?

What is your best on Stage Experience?

Next in the agenda is to make new materials. Some ambitious collaboration is also in the agenda. International platform is definitely on the cards and should happen soon.

Kyra Bangalore, the first gig for Agam (June 2010) Vibha Dhwani, where we debuted our flag ship songs Swans of Saraswathi and Boat Song. We got our first very standing ovation! Storm Festival, Coorg - this one gig turned a lot of things around in our musical journey.

Tell us about the charity events done by Agam.

We composed the song Live Again, that featured multiple award winning Indian musician Shreya Ghoshal, for breast cancer awareness in the country and we have also done concerts for charity organizations like Vibha Dhwani and Project Utthan. Coordinated by Pooja Goud

Favourite city to perform in?

Of course we love to play at the bands home town,Namme Bengaluru but closely followed by our other favourites - Hyderabad, Chennai & Cochin :)

What makes Agams Music stand out from the rest of the music out there?

There have been many experiments around Carnatic music in the past. The one thing that stands out with our music is the melody structures in the vocal rendition and guitar leads are predominantly Indian classical.

Vivacious, bright, articulate and highly talented -this best sums up Dr. Ambika Kameshwar. A passionate lover of arts and theatre, she dons multiple roles in life, that of dancer, educationist, singer, choreographer and music composer. Recently, in a brief sharing of special moments with Eves Times, Dr. Ambika waxed eloquently about her lifes mission- RASA.

started singing at five years of age and also commenced dancing by age six. Dance and music are like my eyes. I find immense joy and grace in performance. I am eternally grateful to God for having opened wide the doors of opportunity to grow, and expand, and in the process, discover myself, says Ambika. I have learnt a lot from the wonder of theatre. Whenever I start imparting the nuances and intricacies of dance and drama to my students, I experience the totality of the moment. Every aspect of Indian theatre has its own magical impact. Dr. Ambika Kameshwars PhD was on the topic Natyabhinaya and Indian theater; her post doctoral thesis was on the use of theatre arts as a holistic developmental tool. Dr. Ambika now heads a team of dedicated people who aspire to give children with special needs an opportunity to achieve their maximum potential through the methodology she has devised herself- the theatre. The Indian theatre has myriad tools like storytelling, art, craft and lots more besides.Theatre is not really apart from real life, for instance, vachika abhinaya is used when you speak, and angika abhinaya is use of gestures, aryabhinaya, when you give attention to detail and to the costumes or apparel worn. When you are finally able to connect to the moment, it is sattvikabhinaya, explains Ambika. You start learning to respect that real life too is like the theatre, and

there are co-actors as on stage. We as a family are devotees of Sri Ramana Maharishi. When I was around 18 years of age, my father had ventured out to start the Ramana Maharishi Institute in Bangalore. Another friend of his had started a similar institute for the visually challenged. Once, he asked me to teach these children dance, and this experience proved to be a very touching and moving experience for me. They used to touch my hands to learn the mudras, touch my feet to know the steps. It was an infinitely moving experience for me. I found great passion, positivity, dedication and commitment in them. Dr. Ambika got engaged and married at around this time, and once she shifted to Chennai, her co-sister who was working in the Spastic Society if India invited her to teach dance to those students. I was only too happy to volunteer and continued to teach them dance and music. It was from these myriad experiences that I learnt that the magical touch of theatre, dance and music will benefit all. I devised the methodology I use now at RASA during those days. In 1982, my journey commenced. By 1985, my methodology had received recognition and news about this spread far through word of mouth. Finally, in 1989, with a team of likeminded people, I decided to start RASA- short for Ramana Sunritya Aalaya. When it was conceived, it was just a

dream. Today, it is a dream come true, thanks to all who have been involved with Rasa. As Rasa grows and touches more lives, it celebrates the joy in movement and the eternal triumph of the human spirit. The State Bank of India supports Rasa in all its endeavors. Rasas mission is to understand deeply the values of life through exploration and performing Indian dance, drama and music. It provides opportunities galore for individuals to develop and display their talent and thereby contribute towards the promotion of our rich Indian culture and heritage. Rasa focuses on use of theatre arts as a holistic development tool. It also aims for the rehabilitation of children and people with disabilities. All of us were born with a natural sense of movement which can be tapped and channelized to help us explore and achieve our full potential. Children too become more aware of their minds and bodies and their innate capabilities, explains Ambika. Rasa reaches out to more than a hundred students in its three branches in Chennai based at Abhiramapuram, Thiruvanmiyur and Mehta Nagar. Children with mental retardation, cerebral palsy, Downs syndrome and autism are brought in for rehabilitation. The students and adults of Rasa are

She has also been honored with the Kalaimamani Award for the year 2004 by the TamilNadu Government. Life is all about movement, rhythm, love and laughter. With rasanubhava, I wish to enjoy and touch the lives and hearts of many. Life is indeed beautiful. Live each moment in its entirety, smilingly concludes beautiful Dr. Ambika Kameshwar.

Dr.

Padma Shri Gayatri Sankaran needs no introduction. She is a distinguished Carnatic music vocalist of the All India Radio and also the first visually challenged musician to receive the prestigious Padma Shri award from the President of India. Not only is she a renowned vocalist but also a PhD in music from Madras University. Gayatri began her tutelage in music at the tender age of three and a half years, under her own mother Smt. Subbulakshmi Gurunathan, who was also a vocalist at the All India Radio. Her mother used to sing repeatedly to her and Gayatri developed a keen ear for music that has stood her in good stead all her life. But tragedy struck pretty soon and Gayatri lost her mother at a tender age of six. Yet even after the unfortunate and sudden demise of her mother, Gayatri continued to learn music at her home town Samalkot in Andhra Pradesh, under the able tutelage of Allamaraju Someswara Rao, a renowned vocalist with All India Radio at Vizag. Gayatris grandmother used to accompany her to her classes and helped her to take

notes. At age 11, Gayatri gave her first recital marking her entry into the arena of Carnatic music. By the time she was thirteen, Gayatri had decided to make a conscious move to Chennai to pursue her passion for music. She was admitted to Kalakshetra after Rukmini Arundale heard her sing and recognized the innate talent in the young girl. Gayatri continued to learn music for six years at Kalakshetra under the guidance of Pudukkodu Krishnamurthy and Vairamangalam Lakshmi Narayanan, both eminent vocalists. She also learnt to play the violin from Pakkala Ramdas. The year 1998 proved to be a turning point in her life. She was accepted as a student by the legend, Padma Bhushan Shri Lalgudi Jayaraman. From him, she learnt swaragnanam, manodharma sangeetham, explored the vast depths of our musical tradition, and also learnt the nuances of being a performing artist. I used to practice for four to five hours a day, and allotted three to four classes a week, each

erman-born American physicist, Albert Einstein once said, The gift of fantasy has meant more to me than my talent for absorbing positive knowledge Imagination is more important than knowledge. You need the power of imagination to fantasize. The following celebrities fantasize about the ensuing New Year, how a genie could change their lives. No wonder they are creative people, hence each fantasy is unique. Singer Sukhwinder Singh finds that a genie approaching and telling him to ask

for a boon is in itself a big fantasy. He considers that it would be the biggest mistake of that genie because he would ask her to stay back and marry him! On the other hand, he clarifies, If it is a male genie, then I would ask him for a female genie as the boon and marry her. Then wow, what a life it would be after that. I would tell her to remove traffic congestion from the roads so that I could zoom all over the city without stagnating in a jam for hours or maybe she could give me wings to fly around. She would pamper me, she would cook lovely Punjabi food, she would flirt with me and she would clean the pollution

from the air and food. She would run all my errands while I would be spoiling her completely. As my wife she wouldnt have to do anything else except for lifting her magic wand to say abra-kadabra and the wish would be fulfilled. In my childhood, I had dreamt of a big white palace. I shall ask her to take me on a tour of such beautiful peaceful palace. Wow, what a fantasy! Film and TV actor, Eijaz Khan wants the genie to enable his car to travel in the air, minus any petrol. He explains, A flying car would make a great possession and also make my life simpler.

very year marks a new beginning. Its like a new canvas, waiting to be splashed with fresh colours and bright dreams waiting to be fulfilled. For some, the New Year is all about celebrating with friends and family. For others, it is about harbouring hopes of a better planet. We sent Delhi reeling into the realm of New Years fantasies and heres what we found.

Joshua Nath,Media Professional, New Delhi I wish all the alcohol bottles disappear on New Years Eve so that people enter the next year healthy and booze free. I also hope whoever I get in touch with this New Year, the person goes away happier after encountering me. Another New Years fantasy is to make 50 sandwiches for a bread party where Ill invite all my friends. Last but not least, I hope the government abolishes cycle rickshaws for any able person under 30 years of age and starts free cycle driveways for everyone in Delhi.

Leela Sinha, Designer, New Delhi New Year would be perfect if it would start with a nightout with all friends and family members. There should be no limitation of food, beverages and time in outlets across the city.

Achintan Gupta, Business Development Manager, New Delhi. My New Year fantasy is to see Delhi as a corruption-free city and that Delhi Metro spreads to all parts of Delhi/NCR. I would also like the educational system to ensure merit takes the driving seat.

Angelene Kaur, P s y c h o t h e ra p i s t , New Delhi My New Year fantasy is to see free hotels and restaurants for dogs so that street dogs in the city always have something to eat and a place to rest during extreme weather conditions.

Subhajit Chandra, Trainee, New Delhi My New Year fantasy would be to see that women in Delhi can travel safely at night without the fear of getting raped or molested.

Recipe for the perfect winter beverage

Rishi Wadhwa

ith winters falling in full fledged we bring to you some typical Bambaiya or Mumbaiya recipes to stay warm. A beverage specially made for winters makes the winter cozier and warmer, especially when you slurp together with your loved ones. Traditional western winter beverages include hot chocolate, mulled apple cider, Tom and Jerry, buttered rum and mulled wine. Anyone will leap at the thought of having freshly made steaming Masala Chai on a chilly day. Rishi Wadhwa culls some really interesting alcohol and non alcohol beverages that you can make at home this winter. All these recipes have been shared by Crystal Mendonca , Executive Chef of Hotel Peninsula Grand, Andheri East, Mumbai.

SPANISH THICK HOT CHOCOLATE (Serves 12)

Hot dark chocolate can bring warmth to your body, increases blood flow in the body, is heart healthy and most importantly, is a treat too. To make it a healthy and low calorie winter drink, use low fat dark chocolate with skimmed milk. Hot chocolate is always tempting but is a calorie rich food. So, be careful if you do not want to put on winter weight. INGREDIENTS 250 gm semisweet chocolate, grated ( or use semisweet chocolate chips) 2 cups milk teaspoon cornstarch, dissolved in a little cold water teaspoon instant coffee METHOD Heat the grated chocolate and the milk in a saucepan. Mix in the instant coffee. Stir to completely mix and make sure the chocolate is melted. When it comes to a boil, add the dissolved cornstarch. Bring back to a boil 3 times, whisking vigorously and removing from the heat each time it starts to bubble to prevent the mixture from boiling over. Ladle into cups from a suitable height to make it nice and frothy. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Dream
Bhagya Ayyavoo

Living a

very great dream begins with a dreamer. The dream began for Jagadeesan Vishnuvardhan when he was a 10-year-old boy watching Indian tennis star Leander Paes win the bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Little did Vishnu know that he would partner Paes during his Olympic debut at the 2012 London Games. Success took its time in Vishnus career. But the first installment finally arrived in July.

Living a dream - your debut at the London Olympics can easily be tagged that... do you believe all that hard work and persistence finally paid off?

1.

time and it was only 2 years since I was introduced to the sport. So to partner with such a legend is an amazing feeling. And to win the first match against all odds was even greater. How would you describe this year - 2012 - in your career graph? How important will that be couple of years down the line?

Yes, absolutely. Its a dream come true for me to play in the London Olympics. The outcome is not my contribution alone, but the hard work, sacrifice and the persistence of my whole team. Not many Indian tennis players have had the opportunity to represent the nation in both singles and doubles - that too in their debut Olympics. And partnering with Leander Paes is a great honor. You may probably be the lone Indian youngster to have achieved that. Has it sunk in yet?

3.

2.

My progress has been very slow every year. 2012 is a very important year as it gave me opportunities to play bigger events and make a mark for myself. It will be a year of new beginnings!

4.

Who is the biggest inspiration to you?

Leander is a huge inspiration for me. And my earliest memory of Olympics is because of Leander when he was the first athlete from India to win a medal. I was just 10 years old at that

My coach and my family, they have succeeded despite all odds.

Eschewing Negativity

the end of the years drawing to a close, and its time to rethink those resolutions! Im going to tell you something about choices, and the benefit of making responsible decisions. Have you heard of the saying, You made your bed so lie on it? Among a few evergreen sayings, this one rings true in our everyday lives. Right from choosing a dress to wear, to deciding the path of our lives, we have the indomitable weapon of choice right in our hands. But it is a tightrope walk, a walk down a path that necessarily needs you to be conscientious in your every turn. Id like to share my story with you. When I headed to Law School, people were sure Id join my fathers firm. But I was dead-set on the UN. Law School ended, and I found my quickest way into the UN. I worked hard. Sometimes, I saw results. Most times, I didnt. And it happened with every place UN, or non-UN, nonprofit or for-profit, that I worked with. A little while after I began, I saw a movie called the Whistle-blower. It was a powerful story, a film that showed all the chinks in the UN armour. The movie got me thinking. Do I want to work with a global organization that has so many discredits to its name? Yes indeed, the UN is far from being perfect. But isnt that the case with everything else in the world? Take the USA for example. It is the worlds biggest warmongering state, and indulges in flagrant violation of sovereign rights of other countries. And yet we beautify the country as a global super power. We love it, its sitcoms, we love Hollywood. We love its writers and actors. We love its FMCGs and embrace McDonalds and GAP with fervour. We want a bite of the Big Apple. We adopt its language as ours. There are two sides to every coin. To say that working with the UN or wanting to work with the UN makes a person inherently bad is stretching logic a little too far. I am a lawyer. If Id chosen to be a practitioner, who can guarantee that a client I might represent may not be on the wrong side of the law? Does representing such a client make me bad, by extension? Well, not really. It is an occupational hazard, this stigmatization. Had I a bad client, my duty would be to represent him to the extent that his case allows me to but my greater duty, would be to serve a bigger purpose that of assisting in exposing the truth. And that would be the true victory, even if my client be slighted in the process. So make your choices, but do the right thing. Dont fall prey to negativity or wrong activities because of the choice you made. If you join a bad system, work to change it. If you join a good system, work to preserve its goodness.

neighbor too. There is no age bar to get your heart broken. And funnily even the most mature woman, be it your stony faced aunty next door or the large hearted roly-poly owner of the corner shop, crumbles into a sausage roll when her heart is broken. It is like a toothache. It festers inside you and unless you decide that you need to see a dentist and get it pulled out it is going to stay there , reminding you each time you have a sweet or sour moment. Surviving a relationship can at first seem like the most impossible thing youve ever done. Emotions are deep and intense. Whether you the one breaking off or wanting to stay, it still hurts. Fortunately, this difficult point of your life is doable and can be accomplished, leaving you a stronger person. Sometimes someone can crack open something that feels very safe and make you unreasonably vulnerable: you will live to tell the story of this shock. And here is how you are going to make it. Some tips to get over the PMS syndrome. For a change, lets not spring clean and throw away your exs stuff. Keep them with you. Why is it that you have to smash every doll, tear every card and weep your way through the trauma? Preserve them, as a chapter of your life thats now ended. Lock them safely in a vault, safe, but meant to be forgotten. P.S the poor soft toy he gifted you doesnt deserve the punches you aim at it, nor is your ex going to wake up with a jolt. Goners are goners! Save the toy Working your way through three bottles of rum, sloshed enough so that you can call him and either moon over a lost love, or chanting a string of cuss words has been tried and tested in films, sitcoms and by your friends. Its done to death and your ex is going to be expecting your call. So save the drama and settle for a nice cupcake and a good book instead. Who said you cant get high on sugar? It gives you the happy high you want, and youd still remember everything if you end up making a fool of yourself. Your ex is not going to be jealous about your present love life or the number of men you go through, like clothes, simply in the name of revenge. So spare yourself from the rebound rampage and settle back to enjoy singledom. Its not a bad world at all. Stop cursing happy couples around you. Being bitter, mean or bursting into a tidal wave of tears at seeing a couple being happy is being a sour pot. Surely you did have your happy times with your ex. Thats done and over. Let them have theirs! A wild makeover is only going to tell the world that a freak is born. So spare yourself from ghastly haircuts, piercings and holes in unwanted body parts, and getting tattooed across your forehead, and getting suicidal. Remember, you are growing to grow out of this phase and you will be mortified seeing your made over self! It is just a matter of sooner or later. Lastly, in context of the time we are in; do not hope for the world to end on 22/ 12/2012. For heavens sake, the world does not need to go down the drain for your silly ex. (A survey showed that 60 % girls who faced a breakup from October have been fervently praying the Mayans keep their word). Last but not the least, its OK to cry. Hearts are broken because they are meant to be healed, and the first thing you can do is to accept that you have been cheated, and stop making excuses for your ex. Even in the happiest crowd you will feel alone, retail therapy will feel great when you are blowing bucks but you will come back to an empty house and an emptier wallet. Shredding pictures, sleeping in the shower, and turning anorexic are clichs tried, tested and retested by the dumped half over centuries. Spare yourself from the PMS and you will live to tell your breakup story.

For Your Eyes Only

This is quite a situation youve got yourself into my friend; however we will find a way out. Although friendship is supposed to be the simplest form of any relationship it doesnt mean that it cant get complicated. And in your case it might have just gotten a little complex. When we get into any relationship, our aim is to first construct a solid base for the current relationship. After having created a strong base, we now seek extensions of the current relationship. What I mean by this is that, in order to ensure that the relationship you are interested in stays strong, you must ensure that the people who exist in and around the relationship are accepting or inviting of you. So in reference to your situation, in order to ensure your relationship with your boyfriend is strong, you were trying to ensure that his friends approve of you and accept you into their group as well. Its only the most logical thing to do! However sometimes things may get a little carried away. We may start out with one thought or idea in mind and end up doing something completely different, its just the way life works. So what may have started as a causal friendship developed into closeness and has been nipped in the bud before it turned into something totally different. Sigh! But while there is relief, there is an air of tension too. Now that the relation between you and the friend has become so strong, you are unable to accept this sudden distance and he was left with no choice at all but to take a drastic action. You see for him it was like a life or death situation, it was either friendship or complete damage for him. So he made the wise choice of choosing friendship over anything else. But where did that leave you, stranded between the devil and the deep blue sea! Well its time to shake off the dust and get up my friend. You see Ms. Lonely, if maintaining relationships was that easy, there wouldnt have been such a demand for shrinks. The reason being that each relationship, big or small (I mean you and me, to mergers between

multinational companies) takes great effort. There is a lot that goes into creating, building and nurturing your relationships. So though I wish I had more of a solution for you, this time I have only advice. Learn to see relationships through the eyes of the others. Your friend must be feeling a lot of pain right now and the last thing you want to do is to make him feel worse by fighting for the friendship with your friend itself. He must be treading a really lonely path right now and there is no one with whom he can share his trouble with or someone to even understand his emotions. Im sure he must have felt something really strong for you to have made such a stern decision, so I can only imagine how he is dealing with this all by himself but this is something that he should deal with alone. Nevertheless you can do something to make things better.Try to forget the sudden change and trace your memory back to the times when you two were best buddies. Think of the times when you both shared joyous moments. Reminisce the good times that you shared together. This will help you deal with the awkwardness. And to ensure that things come back to normal between you and him, I feel that you should just reassure him that there is nothing to worry or isolate himself for, and give him the same advice of reminiscing the good old times. Make a pact never to break the pact! And hopefully things should go back to nearly normal. I once told my best friend, a relationship is much like a flower, its most beautiful while it blooms but quite ghastly when it dies, so in order to ensure that it lasts long you must treat it delicately and give it all the necessary nourishment it needs. But the most important of all is to compliment it because it does not know how beautiful it is unless you compliment it. If I had a flower for every time I thought of you...I could walk through my garden forever. Alfred Tennyson

Dont walk behind me; I may not lead. Dont walk in front of me; I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend. Albert Camus
Im quite confused. Im in a situation where I feel stranded and alone. My boyfriends close friend became my close friend over the last three years. Initially it was very formal but as time went by we became immensely close. So close that I think it confused our feelings, however we still maintained our relationship as friends until he started to isolate himself from me. I dont know why he did that and now I feel lost and lonely and I dont know what to do. Please help.

THE UNDEFEATABLE TRIO

Chandrika Radhakrishnan

have come across a few people who strive to live by the law laid down by Confucius a few centuries ago. Subbiah, Suman and Swarna are superior people who seek what they want within themselves. It is such a refreshing change. We all overreact to the adversities of life. We very rarely count our blessings and we tend to blow things out of proportion despite having all our senses intact and seemingly blessed. I had the fortune to visit Enable India in Bangalore, whose tagline is,Empowering persons with Disability and meet some of the wonderful people who looked at adversity in the eye and managed to overcome it in the best possible way. They did not continue to bemoan their fate, instead took their lives firmly in their hands and continue to do so. A handsome and cheerful Subbiah started losing his sight when he was fifteen. When he was in his 11 grade, he found it difficult to use the microscope. Doctors told him that he had Retinitis Pigmentosa and the condition cannot be arrested. He still refused to have a scribe during his 12th board and the school supported him by placing a light just above his desk as he could see better with the light. The teachers and friends advised him to write slowly as this problem could lead to overwriting. In his own words he plays light the turmoil that he underwent during his final examination. I followed the instructions but my enthusiasm for my favourite subject, Math, made me forget the advice and I wrote the exam in such a tearing hurry that I failed in the examination. He continues with a self deprecating shrug. I, who had taught so many students, ended up failing all because my handwriting was indecipherable.

What the superior man seeks is in himself; what the small man seeks is in others. Confucius

advice as she was working in the premier Arvind Eye Hospital and felt that it would be better that he joins the Indian Association for the Blind and it was there that he had the mobility training and mastered the art of living with his disability. He enrolled himself in Wakfboard College for BBE much against the wishes of the professors. Subbiah says in his usual happy demeanor, People feel anyone blind should take up the socalled easy subjects like history or study of languages irrespective of your desire and liking. I wanted to do Statistics, Economics and was given a months time to prove myself and go for a change in course if necessary. I stood first in all the 6 semesters and scored University first rank! It was the same attitude for even the extracurricular activities. I was taken to participate only in the final year for debate, quiz and our college ended with the rolling trophy for the year. Now with an MBA HR &Systems from Madurai Kamraj University under his belt he works as Account Manager in Enable India solutions in Bangalore. His sense of humour is so good that when he was asked if he had the same problem his friend had and if he signed for Retina India he says with a chuckle, Maam his problem is like plain Dosa and mine is Masala and hence difficult to get cured! When asked about his fear when he realized that he was going blind, he says that there was a stage when he thought that the only option for him was to learn singing. He says wryly,The thought of learning to sing, with my kind of voice made me rethink my goal! He went on to learn to play the Mridamgam, an instrumental music. One of Subbiahs hobbies is to read and he enjoys reading Bhagavad Gita. He loves to trek along the tough slopes of the Western Ghats as it challenges his innate quest for adventure. He is a fitness fad and says, I need to keep myself fit so that I can trek with ease. He loves to interact with people and his only advice to sighted people is, Dont make it your lifes mission to help us cross the road whether we want to or not!

Suman Damera

Swarna

He says that general knowledge helped him overcome his deteriorating sight. He knew all about Milton, Helen Keller and Surdas and he took the problems in his stride and has been doing so from his 17th year to his present 30s. He says in his inimitable style, You know maam, it is the attitude that matters and I decided to change my attitude and accept the fact that there is life beyond senses He moved to Madurai at his aunts

His parents have only two wishesa prayer for regaining his sight and another to get him married. Many of us find a scapegoat in fate or in God but he says that God is not a matter of belief, he has to be realized. When we asked if he feels that people need to be more empathetic he says gravely, a first for the evening and it stood out all the more for it was so alien to his nature. Empathy is not a skill to be honed. I believe it is innate in certain peoplepeople possess it or they dont. I am not sure if my friends had heard of the quote by William James but they surely live up to the same, The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitude. Suman Damera 28, a personable young man started losing his sight slowly only at 21 and by 23 -24 he was completely sightless though he has some light perception. He was in denial and wasted two precious years. In retrospect, he feels that there is no harm in hoping. On the other hand, hoping for miracles should not impede your progress. He being a software engineer is currently working at SAP Labs India Pvt Ltd as Accessibility Engineer for the past four months. He was in Enable India as a software tester for three and a half months. He has been successful in making a couple of software for the disabled He laughs along with his friend Subbiah and relates an incident when the two of them were forcibly made to cross the road even when they were least interested to do and were pondering on whether to buy some fruit or not. The duo laughed again when they said that many peoples perception of the blind is that they are capable of only singing in trains for some loose change or to be helped to cross the road. When asked if the disability did not make him less cheerful, he says that he was not this cheerful in the early days of his disability. He was afraid to hang out with his friends of his childhood days but as years passed by he found it easier. During the conversation he comes

up with many pearls of wisdom. He says that one should be engaged productively to forget a problem. He reiterates that one should not lose out on opportunity waiting for a miracle. His only grouse against the sighted is that when you dont actually have a problem you see everything as a problem.

They got married in 2009 and are proud parents of a 2 year old bundle of mischief. Her husband is very supportive of her. He does not mollycoddle her and does not listen to any excuses based on her disability. Naturally, she becomes very agitated when she talks about how neighbours are scared to talk to her and ask silly questions like, how do you eat? She becomes happier when she talks about the talking induction stove that enables her to do her motherly duties and she can cook, wash and do all things that sighted people do. Her only regret is that she is unable to see her two year old Jeevan and she manages to see him by touching his face and feeling him. Muthu a soft spoken thorough gentleman, who married her despite much opposition, feels that people are intellectually challenged. He argues on the word challenged and he feels those who are not rich are also economically challenged and are disabled. He supports her extensively but does not allow her to use her disability as an excuse for further growth. Muthu says they would adopt a second child as soon as the first is older as he does not want his wife to undergo the pregnancy and delivery again as she faced a lot of problems during the same due to her blood pressure. Some of the visually disabled people have only one or two suggestions for the sighted. Their request in their own words, Please dont hold our stick while helping us cross the road. When you take it away from us and drag us, we feel extremely insecure. They also feel that many of the sighted feel that they are also mentally lacking evident by the kind of questions they ask, How do you eat? or How do you have a bath? Their lack of sight makes them more perspicacious and more capable of handling things. They only need to have a place for everything and everything in its place. It is really heartening to meet these wonderful people and appreciate their admirable maturity and composure after facing so many setbacks in life. It really is a lesson for people who tend to see more clouds than the silver lining.

Obstacles dont have to stop you. If you run into a wall, dont turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it, says Michael Jordan.
Swarna was around 6 when she started losing her eyesight in one eye. Belonging to a small village all sorts of herbs and medicines were tried and she lost her sight in both her eyes by 10 -12 years. She went to Delhi to join the National Association for the Blind and had a mutually beneficial arrangement where she got her education and she had to look after the young children in the evenings. She completed her 12th from the National Open School and came back to Mangalore after her education. When in Mangalore she heard about Enable India from a friend and she joined the organization and started to learn computers. She is able to converse in Kannada, English, Hindi, Tamil though she says with a laugh that she is not good in any language. Enable India was good to her in many fronts. She even took part in Bangalore Marathon. It was here that she met Muthu (She calls him Muthu Sir) for he was her teacher and implementation officer in Enable India. They were friends to begin with and when he moved to Pondicherry for his job they continued to speak to each other over Skype. He proposed to her and she accepted. Cupid brought along many problems with it. Even her own mother had reservations about how a sighted person could be happy with a visually challenged lady. Ram

Kumar, Deputy Manager, State Bank of India is true personification of perfection and creativity. He stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration to many; what a person can achieve if he puts his mind to it and pursues excellence steadfastly. Born to Mr. Balasubramaniam and Ms. Sundari, Ram Kumar was a normal boy enjoying his childhood, until a mishap at school slowly plunged him into the world of darkness. When Ram Kumar was studying in the fifth standard, he had a fall in school which damaged the optical nerves. Even though he was operated upon, it was not successful and gradually he lost his vision.

I had plans of doing articleship and in the meantime, I sat for Bank Exams. Initially, I got selected for the clerical post. But I had also written my exams for the post of probationary officer, and within two days of my joining the bank as clerical staff, results were out and I was posted as Probationary Officer. I underwent two years of rigorous training in various aspects of banking. After this tenure, we were required to sit for a confirmation test. According to bank norms, any candidate procuring more than 75 percent in both the written test and interview is eligible for promotion as Deputy Manager. I am very proud to say that I cleared both and got appointed as Deputy Manager, Ram is all smiles as he says this. The year 2010 saw him giving vent to his innovative talents and he designed the talking ATMs for which he received the appreciation award from the CGM. Our AGM Girivasan wanted someone to design a website for our department, which is Alternate channels and payments, and I designed the website. December of 2011 is an unforgettable month for Ram; he was awarded the best employee award since the DGM had nominated him. The best was yet to come and in the same month, Ram received the National Award from the President of India for his innovative creation of the talking ATMs. A soft spoken young man, Ram is keen on pursuing his higher studies and completing his CA. I want to scale up the corporate ladder too, smiles Ram Kumar.

Ram is a multi-talented person; apart from browsing the net, he enjoys composing music, plays the piano and key board and pens lyrics. I want to make an album on Lord Shiva and the five elements. Lord Shiva and Murugan are my personal favorites. Ram Kumar is passionate about music and loves fusion of classical and western the best. Fusion music is what I am passionate about, he says. Recently, Mr. Gopinath of Nethrodaya awarded him the Trailblazer award in corporate communication. Ram Kumars personal philosophy is to stay positive, and to stay confident. AGM Sunder, State Bank of India had this to say about Ram Kumar, He is an excellently able person and I always talk about him to my family. Ram is a living example of a person who can move things in the right direction. Manager, Alternate Channels, SBI Mani Sathyamoorthy says, Compared to him, we are the disabled, we have a lot to learn from him. Even a few moments spent in conversation with Ram Kumar, leaves you feeling totally inspired and charged to indulge in the pursuit of perfection and excellence. Heres hoping that Ram Kumar scales greater heights of success in all his endeavors.

From the sixth standard, he was enrolled in Sitaram Vidyalaya and he continued his studies there. Needless to say, he was a very good student and he did extremely well academically. He took up commerce in his 11th and 12th standards and he came out with flying colors by procuring the 14th rank in the State board exams. Spurred on by this success, Ram joined Vivekananda College to pursue his graduation in Commerce. I secured centum in Business maths and came first in the State. I got the second rank in the state for Accountancy, and the first rank in the state for Sanskrit, beams Ram Kumar. Along with pursuing his graduation, Ram also enrolled for Chartered Accountancy and cleared his inter exams by 2008. He completed his B.com too with flying colors by coming second in the State.

polio-affected girl, Tasneem Shaikh said, We had a lesson in our 11th standard Hindi text, where the author, in an unknown city, was feeling weak with high fever. He was taken to his destination by a man, in a bicycle. This man cycled with only one leg since he had lost one of his legs in an accident! Tasneem herself runs a PCO in a Mumbai suburb. You cannot deny the fact that the differently-abled people live a productive life, may be even better than normal people, since they have the drive to achieve something more than normal people. The following three differently-abled people have overcome their life replete with struggle and achieved things anybody would be proud of. Rishi Buttan was born with cerebral palsy and has done MCA from Manovikas Institute of Higher Education. He then joined the Manovikas Charitable Society as Head of IT Administration. 25 year old Rishi lives in East Delhi with his family. Gaurav Dhawan is another student from the institute, who joined the Manovikas Community College (MCC) in January 2011. 21 year old Gaurav, born with mental retardation, is now working with Haldirams, the Bikaner-based savories and sweets shop that has gone global, after completing the Certificate of Hospitality Training Program. Many celebrities in Mumbai consult Ayurveda Doctor Sameer Mansuri, who is blind by birth. All of 36 years, this Ahmedabad-based doctor makes trips to Mumbai especially for people like Subhash Ghai, Salman Khan,Vivek Oberoi, Ashmit Patel and a host of other film and television stars and technicians and the elite from the corporate sector. The following is the observation of many customers at Haldirams. One cannot differentiate Gaurav, by his actions and the way he serves the customers, from other employees. The 6 months of training from MCC has changed his life and helped him to overcome the challenges and limitations in decision making, money concept and functional writing which were a Herculean task for him before joining the course. Now he has a university certification and is a good employee, and earns Rs. 6,500/- per month plus perks, medical insurance, life insurance benefits, etc. Gaurav has received all credits for his abilities which he learned in his life as well as during the face to face contact program at college. He has grasped the foundations of workability, core of the job demands, and understands the application of job skills and demonstrates the real life partical experience with the help of the faculty at MCC. It is shocking to note that Gaurav was actually thrown out of his home by his father due to his disability and now lives in Manovikas Independent Living Centre. He says, Initially when I started my journey, I faced many problems. After two or three years I reached Manovikas Charitable Society. It gave me a direction in life for studying and developed my other qualities. I joined the college with my own efforts and got my certificate. It completely changed my life and after my certification from IGNOU, I got the job in Haldirams. Now my parents are proud of me. I also gained my self-confidence. The parents of Rishi and Dr. Mansuri were shocked, unhappy and worried when they discovered their sons problems. However they were very supportive and the two grew by leaps and bounds and found only progress in their life. They credit their achievements to the support they enjoyed from their family. Both of them find that their families are now proud of them. The incredible thing about Dr. Mansuri is that he supported himself during his studies. Practicing for the last 14-15 years, Dr. Mansuri did not face any obstacles while studying. He states, While practicing yes, I had difficulties because I am blind. In fact I have created herbal packs for better and healthy skin, dandruff and hair fall. Initially people wondered how a blind man could understand beauty or treat them for different beauty or non-beauty related ailments. More than the eye, you need the power of reasoning and relevant intellect to understand the problem. We treat problems with food supplements and if one can understand their composition, effects and side effects then it is easy to comprehend the treatment. Future holds much hope for Rishi as well as people like him. He says, My future plan is to do Ph.D. in the sector of disability on the subject of Rehabilitation and Information Technologies. Dr. Mansuri adds, God is great and whatever each individual gets in life is according to destiny. Mine was to be blind, be a doctor and help others.

prosthesis and assistive devices had not reached our country. However, what hit me hard at the time of the accident was the attitude of the people who expressed pity towards the disabled.

The attitude was so upsetting that I decided to open an institution where able-bodied and disabled children would be put together for schooling, sports, and cultural activities, and all medical facilities would be made available so that they can play together, study together and avail employment opportunities this was my dream at that time . So I started saving my lecturers salary in a post-office account in the belief that the amount would later be used to establish a trust for the disabled.

Breaking Barriers, Illuminating Lives

Its a challenge to work for the challenged but disability is certainly not inability, says rehabilitation professional Dr Uma Tuli.

So it was in 1981 that Amar Jyoti (Eternal Flame) started its humble journey, with 30 students 15 nondisabled and 15 disabled children under a tree. Soon, specific needs of the children were addressed and occupational therapists, counsellors and special educators were added to her team. After five years, they shifted to the land where the school stands proudly today. The entire campus is accessible to all students via tactile routes, ramps and disabled-friendly buses. The school has won accolades for its barrier-free environment.

What was the attitudinal approach of society towards inclusive schools back then and how has it changed now?
It was hard. People thought I was crazy. Dr Tuli battled cynicism and brushed away the brickbats in the very first year. She was able to change the attitude of society through their camp approaches and raising awareness among the masses that given the chance and the facilities, the disabled can achieve anything under the sun. Over the years, peoples attitude

have been married for over a decade. My family is very loving and supportive but of late I feel totally demoralized. I keep feeling that I have been giving too much of myself without paying heed to my own needs. I feel as if my alter ego is looking deep into my soul and probing me as to whether I have done full justice to my own life and my dreams. I know for a fact that my alter ego is right, but I am so very much into being totally family oriented to the point that they have started taking me for granted , and I dont relish this feeling at all. I feel dissatisfied and at an all time low. What can I do to get back on track in life? Rehana Shahid, Banglore
Answer: It sounds like you have lost your identity while merging with that of your family and hence the nagging feeling that you have had no life of your own. A woman, particularly in our country, takes pride in sacrificing a lot for the family initially! This short lived pride pushes her physical and emotional needs to the last in her priorities! It takes her some time to recognize that others took advantage of her benevolent nature and that she allowed people to take her for granted! And to add to it, for all her significant contribution to the family, none gave her the crown of martyrdom! She starts regretting that she hadnt accomplished anything in life, especially when compared to some of her peers who could boast of many achievements. Hope I am reflecting what your inner voice (the alter ego, as mentioned by you) conveyed to you. Lets do a reality check. Are you justified in feeling demoralized and thinking that you have been giving too much of yourself? Dont you believe that you would have made solid contributions to the growth of your family and isnt the satisfaction you derived from doing your duties more than any reward? Your life was not wasted. It is never too late

to pursue your dreams, though! Since you are now in cross roads you may be confused as to what to start with and how to go about it. Just venture on something you are interested in and you will see that things will unfold slowly and the path will be visible! You need to concentrate on two things from now on. One, not to stretch yourself beyond what you can, to please others. Decide on what your duties are and never fail to do them. Two, start working towards your dreams.Without paying heed to what others comment, make a beginning. When people see a change in you, they may resist accepting it; but in due course of time they will have no choice and to your surprise they would start treating you with respect! It is obvious that you are not feeling good about yourself now. Once you start your journey towards your personal goal, you will start respecting yourself and others will follow! To make you feel encouraged, I studied M.Sc Psychology after 29 years of break and started my career at 42! If I can do it, why cant you?

eople respond to the arrest of the girls for posting social media messages following the upshot of the death of a leader in Maharashtra and the consequences of posting a message in the social media. Reposting the fb message which said,

With all respect, everyday, thousands of people die, but still the world moves on. Just due to one politician dying a natural death, everyone just goes bonkers. They should know we are resilient by force, not by choice. When was the last time did anyone showed some respect or even a two minute silence for Shaheed Bhagath Singh, Azad, Sukhdev or any of the people because of whom we are free living Indians? Respect is earned, given and definitely not forced. Today Mumbai shuts down due to fear, not due to respect.

Balasaheb Thackarey was no doubt a great leader Maharashtra has ever seen in decades. Peoples love for him is very evident of the fact that about 20 lakh crowded outside Shivaji Maidan to witness his funeral, only the third instance in the history after the great Mahatma Gandhi and Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar. Regarding the girl being arrested, the charges that were made are completely baseless and curb the freedom of speech. Also, technically speaking, any crime through the cyber medium falls under the purview of the Cyber Crime department so was the action committed with their due knowledge and interference? I doubt. It seems that police have bowed down due to pressure from certain quarters!

Purvisha Peshwe

From chasing women out of bars and pubs to arresting them for expressing their views on a public platform, certain centres of power and influence have left no stone unturned in showing their displeasure for a liberal and modern society where people have the right to declare their viewpoints. I think the recent arrest of Shaheen and Rainu is outrageous. The entire purpose of an online public forum is lost if we are unable to express ourselves freely and have to think 10 times about the sentiments of the various senas, janta parties, dadas, sahebs and all the rest of their posies who might get stung by what we say. Since we boast about fostering a free, democratic society where the public has the power, each individual should be allowed to put forth his or her point of view devoid of any restrictions or obligations.

This is not the India I knew or was proud of. It is sad that various sections and factions of the country are feeling so insecure that they cry blasphemy for every little comment. The arrest of the two girls for comments on facebook is the downfall of democracy and is utterly shameful. Like someone tweeted, next time you want to protest go and torch a bus, pelt stones and destroy public property but dont express your dissent or opinion on any social platform. It is sad that when a facebook post sparked a revolution in Egypt, in India it led to arrest. Its time we looked inside and threw the demons out. Jithin Mathew Media student

I thought I could express my views and exercise the fundamental right of freedom of speech and expression, at least to share my thoughts with my peers and friends, who I collectively can converse with online at least. Turns out, I cant because there is law under Sec 66a in ITA against writing offensive or false messages. So my understanding of all it is that I can express myself freely but I should not be offensive or write a false message, which does make a lot of sense. But, as a citizen of this country am I also to understand that I cannot question any national affair? Am I to keep my attention only to my personal life only? Am I going to be incarcerated for this too? I think weve been governing under the same rules for 6 decades with plenty of new bills and laws introduced. I feel its time someone took a look at the loopholes and the overlapping laws. Being governed under a chaos of words leaves me a little unsettled. Rosanna Abrachan

Whether because of its very poetic nature or because of the great mystery it presents, or both, death is and has very often been glorified in many cultures through many different means. If we were to turn back the pages of history, one would find lot of examples of this shocking fascination of the human species. What makes it sad is the fact that there are no receivers for people who has a difference of opinion. The media in this space acted as a catalyst to these injudicious acts. The girls mentioned in the above article did as little as expressing their opinion on an issue. For that the punishment they got was as resolute as this.

Sonal . B

The instant reaction of many close on the heels of this incident was to refer to the proverbial Article 19a) that apparently guarantees freedom of expression. Has that provision actually come to the rescue of any? More so, it highlights a need to rework the Constitution to make it a document that is understood by all rather than few in saffron and long black coats interpreting it for the rest of the country. More so, it shows the callousness of the Mumbai Police on serving a single

vested interest where by and large, they are meant to serve the public. The same fate befell Aseem Trivedi when he attacked corruption through his cartoons. If you were to tell me that the Mumbai police were great connoisseurs of cartoons to deem what works and what doesnt, it would be a matter of pride. Were you to tell me that they were savvy enough to comprehend all that goes on a social networking site, it would still be something. This is more like the blind being led by the dead but, to where?
