2.3 Sentence Completion Eliza: Professor! Professor! Higgins: Come in.

. Eliza: I have received a letter from The Morning Star regarding the interview that I attended last week.. Higgins: Are they offering you a job. Eliza: I dont know. Higgins: (With a puzzled look on his face) Did you read the letter? Eliza: Yes, but there is a problem. (She gave a sheat of paper to Higgins. It was the letter.) The letter ran thus: Dear Madam, We are sl~cl to inform you that you have elc~1-o the interview that was conducted on the 2nd of this month. We apologize for the inconvenience caused due to a negligence on the part of our staff who prepared the selection list after the interview. Thank you, Higgins: Yes, whats the problem? Eliza: Two important words are smudged and I dont know if I am selected or rejected. Higgins: Its not a big problem at all. The second sentence is a clue. Eliza: How? Higgins: It says that the staff has shown negligence while preparing the selection list. It means that your name was left out. It means you have been selected. (Higgins took his pen, wrote something on the letter and gave it to Eliza.) Dear Madam, We are pleased to inform you that you have cleared the interview that was conducted on the 2nd of this month. We apologize for the inconvenience caused due to a negligence on the part of our staff who prepared the selection list after the interview. Thank you, Eliza: Yes! Yes! Now, I understand. Higgins: Eliza, sentence completion is a skill that a professional should possess, because they might come across such problems in their daily work. Your success in filling up the gaps depends on your proficiency in a language. This is the reason, for including sentence completion task in some of the tests. Eliza: How to develop this skill? Higgins: You must develop a good reading habit. However, when you appear for language tests, you must follow some strategies to answer these questions quickly. Let me explain. (Prof Higgins raised his hands and began to speak.)

Strategies to crack Sentence Completion questions. Step 1 Read the question. Do not see the options. Step 2 Try to complete the sentence with a word from your vocabulary, and that fits the context of the blank. Note words like no, not, rarely, seldom, because they play a significant part in choosing the word. Step 3 If you find a word from your vocabulary, look out for the word or its synonym in the given options. If you find the word, mark it as the answer. Step 4 If you do not find any word, try to find the part of speech to which the word to be filled, belongs. Eliminate other options that are not in the same word class. If one or more options belong to the same word class, consider the options one by one, and choose the correct answer. Step 5 If you do not get any clue, consider the options one by one and choose the right option. Illustrations Question 1 If negotiations are to be fruitful, there must not only be sincerity on both sides, but there should also be ____ in each others sincerity. After reading, the word show strikes the bell. Option [C] is showed. Shyness is showed through abnormal behaviour in various ways. This is not the correct answer: showed is in active voice, where as the structure of the sentence requires a passive voice verb past participle. Option [A] manifested is the right answer.
