Where are you headed this summer? While the possibilities are truly endless, most people can't easily settle on a holiday destination.
One good reason is trying to match the vacation spot and budgets. You need to choose destinations carefully because it not only has a bearing on the getting-there-
and-back costs, but also the amount of money you have to set aside for expenses once you are there.
After the Union Budget and the resultant hike in air and train fares, this has become even more important. The good news is that there are enough places that can
be enjoyed on the strictest of budgets, starting with under Rs 1,000 per person, per day.
The destinations featured on our list were picked by travel experts according to the budgets we allocated. Do note that the prices shown only comprise spends at
the destination-it does not factor in the cost of getting there and back, be it by train, plane, car or boat.
The hotels listed were picked on the basis of not just affordability, but also cleanliness and safety and the tariffs are per person for a night's stay in a standard
double room, unless specified otherwise.
For food, we are showing prices for three budget meals a day, again per person. If you carry some heat-and-eat meals from home and/or rely on cold cuts and
instant noodles at the destination, the saved amount can be used to splurge on, say, a three-course meal at a popular eatery.
As for the entertainment category, the prices reflect the cost of visiting at least two major paid attractions a day at the destination, along with a little extra as a
buffer. If all the major sights in a place are free, as in the case of Tawang, the designated amount can be used for boating or water sports.
Lastly, transportation refers to average cost for at least two rides each day at the foreign destinations while for the Indian destinations, it's a benchmark rate
suggested by Prashant Chauhan, director of MyGuestHouse.com. "Local sightseeing costs around Rs 500 for 40- 50 km in a non-AC taxi so we can use Rs 150 per
person as a benchmark," he explains.
Most importantly, this is merely an indicative list. The prices shown are for summer, when it's shoulder season in most of the featured destinations. If you travel to
these places in their respective peak season, you'll have to inflate your budget.
