Alexandria is the second-largest city of Egypt, with a population of 4.1 million.

It is the largest seaport and the country's window onto the Mediterranean Sea. Alexandria has an atmosphere that is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern; its ambiance and cultural heritage distance it from the rest of the country although it is only 225 km. from Cairo. It is home to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (the new Library of Alexandria). It is an important industrial center because of its natural gas and oil pipelines from Suez. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, Alexandria became the capital of Graco-Roman Egypt; its status as a beacon of culture is symbolized by Pharos, the legendary lighthouse that was one of the Seven Wonders of the World. . This Alexandria has been immortalized by writers such as E.M. Forster and Cavafy. Generations of immigrants from Greece, Italy and the Levant settled here and made the city synonymous with commerce, cosmopolitanism and bohemian culture; Lawrence Durrell described it as "The capital city of Asiatic Europe, if such a thing could exist". The Port of Alexandria is on the West Verge of the Nile Delta between the Mediterranean Sea and Mariut Lake in Alexandria, Egypt. The Port of Alexandria has had the distinction of being the largest receiver and shipper of military equipment on inland waterways in the continental United States. Alexandria Port is one of the oldest and main ports in the world. It is dated to 1900 B.C. were the pharaohs established a port west Pharoon and Pharous islands. This port was entitled Rakouda, to service coastal shipping and supply the island of Pharos (now Ras al-Teen). The port's proximity to Fort Polk's Joint Readiness Training Center in Leesville has attracted heavy use by the U.S. Army and other military units, which use the river to move equipment in and out for training exercises at the nearby military post. Considered the second most important city and the main port in Egypt, it handles over three quarters of Egypts foreign trade. Alexandria port consists of two harbours (East and west) separated by a T-shaped peninsula. The East harbour is shallow and is not navigable by large vessels. The West harbour is used for commercial shipping. The harbour is formed by two converging breakwaters. Industrial use of the port primarily includes bulk fertilizer blending, storage and distribution, aggregate transport for construction projects and creosote handling. With its existing amenities, as well as future planned expansion and enhancements to its infrastructure, the complex is an attractive site for business relocations and new enterprises as the Port is in Foreign Trade Zone # 261 authorized but not activated.
