Black Forest, Germany

The Black Forest covers a triangular section southwestern Germany, roughly 145 km (90 miles) long and 40 km (25 miles) wide. The Feldberg as highest mountain reaches about 1493 m (5000 feet) - excellent for skiing in winter and hiking or mountain climbing in summer. The name Black Forest (Schwarzwald) is a little misleading, as the forest is neither darker nor blacker than anywhere else. In fact, the whole area receives considerably more sunshine than the overall average for the rest of Germany. It is a bright, open land of tree-covered mountains, intermittent pine and birch forests and mountains alive with fairytale villages. There is hardly a section of the Black Forest that is lacking in beauty and charm. Weathered great farmhouses dress the landscape.

Freiburg, Germany
Welcome to Freiburg, sunny capital of the Black Forest, close to the French and Swiss borders. Freiburg is located in southwest Germany, between the Black Forest and the Rhine valley. For centuries it has been attracting people from near and far. Many have come to Freiburg and many have stayed. Today, Freiburg is one of the few German cities where both the population and the economy are growing. The large number of start-up companies in recent years has helped to make Freiburg the environmental capital of Germany. Today, the city of Freiburg has around 200,000 inhabitants, among them 30,000 students at the university, polytechnical colleges and the teaching college. Many research institutions also benefit from the proximity of the university. Typical: Freiburgs Bchle, little streams running through gullies, are one of the historic old towns trademarks. They are thought to have been originally designed to supply the city with water, and for sewage. Today, the streams create a pleasant atmosphere and in the summer entice people of all ages to have a bit of fun. But beware - the legend goes that those who accidentally step into one of the little streams will end up marrying a Freiburger.

Basel, Switzerland
Nestled in the border triangle of Germany, France and Switzerland, Basel is a city full of surprises. The choice of leisure facilities available in Basel is great. This is true not only because of its above-average cultural range, its many high-class museums such as its Kunstmuseum (Museum of Fine Arts), the Beyeler Foundation, or the Antikenmuseum (Museum of Antiquities). Besides culture, Basel also offers many other possibilities for amusing oneself: at sports, walking through the old town, or a stroll to the shops in the inner city. Passenger ships on the Rhine run regular excursions throughout the year. Visitors may also stroll through the town to see works by famous contemporary architects: Gehry, Botta, Diener & Diener, Herzog & de Meuron the last two have their offices in Basel, and Hotz. They all have set new accents in Basel in recent years. Basels foundation goes back to the first century BC, when the earliest fortified settlements were built on the Mnsterhgel (Minster Mount) In the 14th century, Basel liberated itself from its episcopal overlords, but kept the bishops crook in its coat of arms. But that century was also a period of great trials for Basel: first came the Black Death, followed in 1356 by a severe earthquake. One of the great moments in Basels history was the Great Council of Christendom, held in the city from 1431 to 1448, which brought the city to world attention. One of the results was the founding of Basels university, ceremonially opened in 1460. In 1501, Basel joined the Swiss confederation.
