Two hundred acres have been
preserved in Medford and Sha-
mong townships by YMCA Camp
Ockanickon.
The preservation was funded
through Camp Ockanickon and
the New Jersey Pinelands Com-
mission.
According to a release, the
commission transferred a total of
$436,563 from the Pinelands Con-
servation Fund to Camp Ockan-
ickon, which used the money to-
ward the purchase of the proper-
ty located next to the camp. The
total cost of the preservation was
$1.1 million.
According to the Pinelands
Commission website, The
Pinelands National Reserve was
created by Congress under the
National Parks and Recreation
Act of 1978. The PNR is the first
National Reserve in the nation.
The PNR encompasses approxi-
mately 1.1 million acres covering
portions of seven counties and all
or parts of 56 municipalities.
The region is 1.1 million acres
in size and occupies 22 percent of
New Jersey's land area. It is the

The district was awarded $4,500
for their excellence in safety by
the Burlington County Insurance
Pool Joint Insurance Fund at the
Dec. 11 board of education meet-
ing.
The district received $1,000 for
financial excellence for maintain-
ing a 5-year average loss ratio
below 50 percent, $1,000 for finan-
cial excellence for maintaining a
loss ratio below 50 percent and
$2,500 as part of the safety incen-
tive program as the Elite 2 win-
ner.
Its great. Its a real testament
to the work of the safety commit-
tee at the Shamong schools, said
Superintendent of schools De-
lores Szymanski.
According to Szymanski, the
money will be used as an ear-
mark to install additional key-
pads on the doors so people wont
prop the doors open anymore.
The idea is to create a safer
environment inside, said Szy-
manski.
Home and School Association
The Home and School Associa-
tion funded three wish list prod-
ucts to benefit additional learn-
ing in the classroom.
The products donated, Nutri-
tion Nuggets for $209, Light ORa-
ma to IMS for $387 and Reading
Eggs for $649 were all donated to
Indian Mills Elementary School.
We already have the program
in the kindergarten classes, said
Syzmanski. The technology
teacher requested it for addition-
al support and continuity.
During the weekend of Dec. 7
through Dec. 9, the association
held a soccer tournament to raise
money.
In total, 190 students participat-
ed and $3,000 was raised.

A
s the holiday season begins to
wind to a close, we want to
take this opportunity to thank
everyone who stepped up to help those
in need. This time of year usually
brings out the best in people. Judging
from the number of announcements
we received from our readers regard-
ing donation drives, it looks like this
year was no exception.
This year, Hurricane Sandy created
a great need in many communities.
Food banks were running low after
sending supplies to those communities
hit hard by the storm. The same with
those who help with clothing, and even
toys.
In many instances, that meant that
nonprofits and those who work every
day to help folks who are struggling
had an even more difficult task. Dona-
tions, supplies and funds that, in other
years, went to fill traditional annual
needs instead went to the storm vic-
tims. Theres no doubt that even more
generosity was needed this year than
in most just to get by.
Over the past few weeks, we have
had the pleasure of publishing stories
about efforts to lend a hand. Indeed,
many of these efforts were to help
those impacted by the storm. But, like
always, there were the usual Toys for
Tot drives and more. We dont keep a
formal count of the number of holiday
fundraising event stories we publish
from year to year, but it certainly
seemed that, in 2012, there were many
more than in years past.
So, we thank those individuals and
groups who organized these efforts.
And, on behalf of them, we also thank
everyone who picked up an extra can
of non-perishable food, an additional
bag of dog food, one more toy and
more. To all of those who reached a lit-
tle deeper into their wallets this year to
help out, your generosity truly made a
difference.
We wish everyone a happy holiday
season and hope for a hurricane-free
2013.
in our opinion
Happy holidays!
A thank you to everyone who helped to brighten the season for those in need
Stepping up
Hurricane Sandy created an even
greater need for toys, food, clothing
and more this holiday season. Judging
from the number of donation efforts
we saw, local communities really came
through for those in need.
Beginning this month, veterans with ap-
pointments for the Veterans Administra-
tion Hospital in Philadelphia no longer
need to contact the County Division of Mil-
itary and Veterans Services to arrange
transportation.
That is the only change we are making
to veterans transportation, said Freehold-
er Deputy Director Joseph B. Donnelly.
This eliminates our veterans having to
contact us as a third party to get a ride to
the VA Hospital. They now will deal with
SenHan Transit directly.
Veterans Transportation is a fixed route
to the Veterans Hospital and is available
Tuesday through Friday each week. The
pick up and drop off locations are:
American Legion Post 294 in Pem-
berton
Crossroads Plaza on Rt. 38 in Lum-
berton
Kmart Shopping Center on Route 38
in Moorestown
Shoppes at Cinnaminson on Route
130 in Cinnaminson
Reservations are required and can be
made in advance any day from 9 a.m. to 4
p.m. weekdays and as soon as veterans
have their appointment but must be made
no later than 11 a.m. the day before their
appointment. Transportation is provided
only for veterans with medical appoint-
ments.
Doctors appointments at the VA Hospi-
tal should be made for between 9:30 a.m.
and 1 p.m. The bus leaves the VA hospital
at 2:30 p.m. for the return trip.
The Veterans Transportation Service
was instituted by the freeholders in 2000 as
a fixed bus route service to Philadelphia
one day a week because of the lack of park-
ing around the VA Hospital and rising
bridge tolls.
The service has expanded to four days a
week and last year provided 2,321 trips for
county veterans to and from the VA Hospi-
tal. So far this year, 2,176 trips for veterans
have been provided.
SenHan, the transportation provider for
Senior Citizens United Community Servic-
es, began operating all paratransit services
for the County, including Veterans Trans-
portation, on Jan. 1.
A $2 cost share is requested for each trip.
Additional information is available on the
SCUCS web site at www.scucs.org or by
calling 1 (877) 603-5111.

The Green Acres legislation
that appropriates funding for the
acquisition of land for the pur-
pose of conservation and park or
recreation development projects
was approved recently by the
General Assembly. Assembly Re-
publicans Scott Rudder and
Christopher J. Brown advocated
for the legislation.
New Jersey is known as The
Garden State, and the funding
provided by these bills will help
ensure that our residents and vis-
itors to our state will continue to
enjoy the natural resources we
were blessed with, said Rudder.
The Blue Acres program plays
an increasingly important role in
protecting property which is at
the forefront of our concerns
since last years hurricane and
Superstorm Sandy.
Rudder sponsored two biparti-
san bills approved by the Assem-
bly.
The first bill, A-3368, appropri-
ates $45 million from the 2009
Green Acres Fund and $12 mil-
lion from the 2009 Blue Acres
Fund for the potential acquisi-
tion of such lands by the state.
Voters previously approved these
appropriations three years ago.
The second bill, A-3369, appro-
priates $55 million from the 2009
Green Acres Fund and $2.4 mil-
lion from the 1995 Coastal Blue
Acres Fund for potential land
purchase by local governments.
Brown, also sponsored A-3368,
and voted to support both meas-
ures.
The bills released send an im-
portant message that New Jersey
is committed to preserving and
safeguarding its diverse land-
scape, Brown said. We must
continue to safeguard the envi-
ronment and support programs
that protect farms, rivers and
forests, such as Green Acres, that
benefit the people who live and
work here.
Burlington County will receive
$650,000 in funding for acquisi-
tion projects, and Eastampton,
Medford and Evesham, all located
in the 8th Legislative District,
will also be awarded funding
grants under A-3369.
The Green Acres program is
intended to provide financial as-
sistance in order to acquire open
space for recreation and conser-
vation purposes.
The Blue Acres program is
overseen by Green Acres and pro-
vides State grants and low-inter-
est loans to help towns and coun-
ties purchase properties that may
be prone to damage caused by
storms. The 1995 Blue Acres
monies are available for buying
properties on a coastal barrier is-
land or within 150 feet of the
mean high water line of any tidal
waters.

Richmond and Boston and is un-
derlain by aquifers containing 17
trillion gallons of some of the
purest water in the land.
The importance of the pur-
chase is the neighboring land had
some development potential,
said Pinelands Commission
spokesman Paul Leakan. The
[potential] development would
have had some environmental im-
pact. This preservation will open
the opportunity for education and
other programs out there. It gives
Camp Ockanickon more opportu-
nity.
The land preserved contains
two large bodies of water the
camp utilizes for ecological stud-
ies, according to the statement.
Of the land purchased, 160-
acres are located in Medford. The
remaining 40 acres are located in
Shamong.
Were thrilled to participate in
a project that will help protect the
Pinelands on two fronts, said
Nancy Wittenberg, executive di-
rector of the Pinelands Commis-
sion in a statement. First, this
acquisition protects land with ex-
tensive forests and swamps that
serve as headwaters of the Ranco-
cas Creek. Secondly, the camp
will use this property to expand
its education and recreational
programs, which will further
raise awareness and appreciation
of the Pinelands.
According to Leakan, 4,000
acres of land have been preserved
using money from the Pinelands
Conservation Fund. In total, the
Pinelands Commission has pre-
served 50 percent of the
Pinelands region, or half a mil-
lion acres.
Were always happy to pre-
serve environmentally impactful
land, said Leakan.
According to the statement, the
forests, swamps and streams on
the newly preserved property will
enhance and expand the camps
environmental education and
recreation offerings, said Keith
VanDerzee, CEO of Camp Ockan-
ickon.
Camp Ockanickon regularly of-
fers before- and after-school pro-
grams to approximately 100 area
schools.
We are committed to provid-
ing opportunities for our commu-
nity to learn, grow and thrive,
said VanDerzee. This purchase
is a reflection of that commit-
ment, and were grateful, honored
and proud that these entities have
chosen to support us in this proj-
ect.

I have contacted state and fed-

said Tyler.
Those seeking copies need only
provide their name, property ad-
dress, contact information, and
approximate date of purchase.
The clerks office staff will pro-
vide certified copies, and all fees
will be waived.
All property owners who are
dealing with damage and other af-
termath issues caused by the one-
two punch of Sandy and Athena
should reach out to the county
clerks office at (609) 265-5122 or
their federal and state representa-
tives listed below, to request a cer-
tified copy of their deed. Resi-
dents should reach out between
now and the end of the year, Dec.
31, to receive the documents.

I fully recognize that impor-
tant documents are often lost or
become unaccounted for in disas-
ters of this magnitude, said
Tyler. My intent is to make locat-

thing victims of Sandy and
Athena need to worry about as
they work to put their homes and

The Weather Channel with advertising on Elauwits hyperlocal websites in South Jersey,

checking in on their friends on Facebook, theyll be seeing your business.

The association pumps the
funds right back to the students
to help support programs, said
Szymanski.
Resignation
The board approved the resig-
nation of Karl Tower at the board
meeting.
Tower served on the board for
eight years and decided to focus
his efforts elsewhere.
He felt it was time to devote
more time with career issues,
said Szymanski.
The board presented him with
an award for his years of service
to the school. Additionally, the
Shamong Township Education
Association honored Tower for
his service to the school.
Currently, the district is in the
hiring process for a new board
member.
At this point we have run an
advertisement to fill the posi-
tion, said Szymanski. People in
the community have been send-
ing letters of interest and re-
sumes for the open spot on the
board.
Next meeting
Regular action was taken on
the agenda at the meeting.
The next board of education
meeting will be held Jan. 3, at 7
p.m. for reorganization. Meetings
are held in the Media Center of
the Indian Mills Memorial
School, located at 295 Indian Mills
Road, in Shamong.

Basketball season is upon the
schools. Indian Mills Middle
School boys basketball coach Dan
Giordano, girls basketball coach
Stephanie Sorino and cheerlead-
ing coach Tara Orichowskyj
wanted to try something new to
get their respective teams ready.
At the same time, they wanted to
create a positive event for the
community.
After weeks of discussion, the
concept came together as a
fundraiser for the Medford Lakes
Food Bank, run by another Indi-
an Mills Memorial School
teacher, Karen Formont.
A can of food or other non-per-
ishable item was the cost of ad-
mission to the afternoon of bas-
ketball after school on Friday,
Dec. 7.
The boys and girls squads split
into two teams each for the first-
ever green and white scrimmage
games.
Besides drawing an impressive
crowd of parents and fellow stu-
dents, it also brought in a remark-
able group of alumni.
It seems that whenever the
school does one of these events
for a good cause, past graduates
are drawn to it to help.
Hopefully, they can entice other
teams into participating in the
years to come and make it a big-
ger event for the food bank.
