Presentation Title: Graded Range of Motion Therapeutic Exercise - A Safe and Effective Treatment

Short Description:

This practical session will teach a system of therapeutic exercise that is safe, effective, and easy is to
understand and prescribe. Participants will learn the exercises and how to prescribe them, then practice
them with supervision by the instructor.

Abstract:

Learning Objectives - Participants will derive the following from attending this session:
1. A basic understanding of the therapeutic benefit of exercise.
2. A basic understanding of the dangers posed by the wrong types of exercise at the wrong
times.
3. An understanding of the indications and contraindications for the use of these techniques.
4. A practical knowledge of how each exercise is derived, practiced and prescribed.

Presentation Outline:

1. Introduction
A. Brief discussion of types of therapeutic exercise and their application.
1. Stretching
2. Strengthening
3. Graded Range of Motion
4. Conditioning - aerobic and anaerobic
5. Plyometrics
6. Activity-specific training
B. The role of gravity and weight bearing
C. Principals of formulating exercises
D. Principals of prescribing
2. Demonstration of exercises for each area of the body, followed by practice and critique.

Target Audience: Licensed Naturopathic Physicians who use Physical Medicine and Rehabilitative Ex-
ercise in their practice or who would consider adding it if it were easy and safe; naturopathic students;
other practitioners licensed to perform manipulative treatment.

Biographical Sketch:

Andrew Perry, ND has had a Naturopathic Physical Medicine focused practice for 25 years. Prior to his
Naturopathic Career, he practiced as a Licensed Massage Therapist for 5 years. He has been privileged
to study and preceptor with many famous physical medicine practitioners in both the Naturopathic
Medical Profession, as well as other disciplines. He taught Naturopathic Manipulation and Orthope-
dics at NCNM and was Chair of their Physical Medicine Department from 1989 through 1994. He has
presented at numerous AANP and OANP Conventions, and his current efforts for the profession include
being a contributor to NPLEX, a Principal Author of the AANP Position Paper of Naturopathic Manipu-
lation, and a team member of the Foundations Project. Andrew has maintained a focused dedication to
the development of a unique identity for Naturopathic Manipulation in the interdisciplinary world of
Manipulative Treatment.

He is an veteran amateur athlete and racquetball player and is internationally certified by IPRO and AM-
PRO as an Advanced Racquetball Instructor.

Dr. Perry also holds a BA from New College of California, an AA from Mesa Community College in
Mesa, AZ, and a GMT Degree (Graduate Massage Therapist) Degree from the American College of
Natural Healing Sciences. He is licensed as an ND in Oregon and California.
