The past year has been one of the busiest ever for Jeff at the firm, especially this month (which partly accounts for the lateness of this letter). His workload has been such that he has been assisted at the office almost every day by Attorney Lobo, our 12 year old little black dog of unknown parentage. Lobo may not be aiding productivity, but his presence is a great stress reducer and he is more popular with clients than Jeff (while charging lower fees). Jeff is as active as ever on boards of charitable organizations like our community foundation and our health systems medical group. In May he became president of our Boy Scouts council, New Birth of Freedom Council, which now covers six counties and serves more than 11,000 Scouts. It is a great organization with fine camps, a strong program, an able staff, thousands of dedicated volunteers, and a large, capable board. Jeff took the helm just in time for a couple of major eruptions of controversy at the national level over Scouting, presenting challenges which Jeff and the council are still working through to pursue their mission. On nights and weekends, Jeff has been researching and writing a book on the history of our church for th its 250 anniversary. Poring through old, barely- legible records from as early as the 1700s, Jeff is telling the churchs story in the context of American and local history. Now working through the 1920s, Jeff has hundreds of pages and thousands of footnotes behind him and less than 90 years to go. We pray that we can report this project finished next year.

Joseph Ties the Knot Our Ugandan son Joseph returned

to his hometown in Africa to be married this month to his longtime partner Carol. Their children, Joy and Joe Brian (2 and 1), participated in the elaborate ceremony. The family lives in Chicago, but is staying in Uganda till next month.

Cindy, the biker chick, rode her Harley a lot this year, adding thousands of miles to her odometer, as she headed to work at her volunteer job, to church, and to numerous Red Robin restaurants around the state, as well as participating in the MDA Ride for Life. She has become increasingly involved in our restaurant company this fall, and to better understand operations, she took the intense nine-week management training courseworking long hours in every position, taking inventory at 5 a.m., memorizing recipes, shelf lives, cut sizes, legal requirements, and much more. Of course, she aced the final exam. With her interest in genealogy, Cindy continues as our church archivist, th an important post this year as the church celebrated its 250 anniversary. She researched the 178 people interred in the church burial ground and compiled a book about them which will be published next year. She and Jeff recently led the youth group on their bellies through the cramped and dusty crawl spaces beneath the old church to some concealed subterranean tombs. She also attended a Red Robin conference at a Mexican resort, but her favorite pastime is spoiling our granddaughters, whom we are lucky to see almost weekly.
