NORTH OAKVILLE TODAY

13

By Michael Howie

For as long as she can remember, Chemayne Micallef has loved Christmas. She sang her first Christmas Carol on live television with her brother when she was 6 and was playing them on the piano within a year of that. Today, North Oakvilles Micallef is a platinum-selling recording artist with three Christmas albums that are becoming a part of the holiday tradition for families around the world. Its my favourite time of year, she said. Theres something kind of magical about Christmas music. And I love that around the world, on the same day, everyones tuned in to my arrangements, listening during their Christmas dinner or while sitting by a roaring fire. I get lots of feedback about the albums becoming part of families traditions. Micallefs Christmas albums, Christmas Hymns (vocal, guitar, flute and piano), Christmas Piano (solo piano) and Christmas Harp (solo harp and string pads) have sold well across the world on iTunes and Amazon. But theyve also been heard in Brad Pitts Year of the Dog as part of the soundtrack. Galaxie, a digital music provider, also routinely plays Micallefs traditional Christmas music. I remember walking into the Hilton one year and hearing my songs playing, Micallef said with a smile. That was pretty surreal. Lace em up and enjoy a free skate at River Oaks Recreation Centre on January 4 from 10:30 am to noon and help support Kerr Street Ministries food bank. The skate, sponsored by an Oak Park family (members of the Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre), will be a collection point for a non-perishable food item donation. Were always looking to support our community, both in Oak Park and across the town, said Michelle Knoll, Executive Director of the Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre. The anonymous family sponsoring this skate, and thereby helping raise much needed food for the Kerr Street Ministrys food bank, is an example to us all of how a community can come together for those who need a helping hand. The food bank is most in need of flour, powdered milk, diapers, cooking oil and canned meat. Find out more about upcoming community events in Oak Park by visiting www.opnc.ca.
