ELWA YOUTH CAMP RESTORATION PROJECT

A Heart for Liberia, a Hand of Hope

A volunteer team has been put together to serve alongside ELWA Ministries Association in Monrovia, Liberia, to restore the ELWA Youth Camp (formerly named Camp Lawana). Our volunteers are responsible for their own expenses, but we need your help to cover the costs of building materials, paint, bunk beds and mattresses, which have been estimated at $52,000.
A Personal Story

In 1951, a small band of courageous missionaries, driven by a love of Jesus Christ and a dedication to His service, embarked for Liberia. On a 130-acre oceanfront site donated by the Liberian government, they established ELWA (Eternal Love Winning Africa), which eventually grew to operate a 50-bed hospital, a 400-student K-9 Christian elementary school, a youth camp and the first Christian radio built in all of Africa. My parents, Bill and Betty Thompson, joined the ELWA ministry in Liberia in 1953. My four siblings were born in Liberia and I called ELWA my home until I was eighteen years old. Growing up at ELWA, seeing God provide for us and learning about Jesus alongside hundreds of Liberian children at the ELWA youth camp are vivid memories for me and my sisters and brothers. When I was 12, attending the camp, I dedicated my life to God at the Saturday night bonfire. Unfortunately, the 14-year civil war which gripped Liberia has left many of the ELWA campus facilities in disrepair. With God's help, however, SIM (Serving in Mission) and EMAUSA (ELWA Ministries Association) have partnered on a 3year plan to completely restore the ELWA campus by 2015.

Please donate today!

My brother-in-law Perry Moore is a member of the EMAUSA board of directors, whose priority for 2013 is to restore the ELWA youth camp. In March, Perry and my sister Sally will lead a group of volunteers to work alongside Liberian citizens to accomplish this restoration. We plan to renovate, re-roof, and repaint all of the youth cabins, pavilion, the kitchen, and the storage facilities, as well as address any structural issues.

Former campers have said, "Camp Lawana not only thought me the Word. It also thought me how
to serve others. How memorize and apply it to my life. I made lifelong friends through Camp Lawana! It was the highlight of my summer vacations. ..." and "My last attendance at camp was in 1984. I was one of the two selected for Sunday morning chapel. The other person gave a testimony and I sang a solo while playing my guitar. Those foundations played a lasting role in my work for Christ."
