Businesses, community members raise money for charity during second Midnight Madness
Alex Diakonis
Special Writer
In the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping, businesses in Manchester show that it still is the season of giving by donating 10 percent of their Midnight Madness sales to charity. The shoppers chose a charity to receive the sum of money by selecting the charitys name from a list at the register of participating businesses; the charity with the most votes at the end of the event wins all the money raised. Many of the participating businesses kept longer hours; some stayed open until midnight when they regularly close at 8 p.m. While the event brings more shoppers, business owners and managers look forward to the opportunity to give back to the community, which supports them. The Manchester Pharmacy, which also sells gifts and flowers, participated Friday. Jay Demski, pharmacy manager, said he felt positive about the event. It feels great, he said. We definitely strive to give back. Were really happy to be involved.
He also said that Fridays cold, windy weather might have kept some of the shoppers away noting that it was not as busy as it was in the previous year. Steven Hahne, the manager of McLennan Gardens and organizer of Midnight Madness, was shopping at Manchester Pharmacy for gifts for his family. I dont feel like fighting the big crowds, he said. The idea for Midnight Madness came to Hahne when he was told by many people that they felt like he did. They did not like fighting the mall crowds and want the opportunity to buy gifts from local businesses. I heard from retailers that they want more business and customers said that the businesses werent open late enough, said Hahne, [Midnight Madness] is really is a winwin. Chris Moyla, owner of Ollies Pizza and Grinders, said that he was not Bohnett, a history buff and local author, selected the Manchester Area Historical Society as his favored charity.

Hundreds of children in need throughout Washtenaw County had presents this year due to the Magic of Christmas charity with help from some area police agencies, schools and many others. More volunteers and organizations are helped than ever before, although the need for their efforts continues to be high. Debbie Williams-Hoak, a former professional golfer in the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour who currently teaches, started the charity 17 years ago. The charity wouldnt be possible without everyone who rallies together to make an effort to help others during the holidays, she said. She said they all enjoy coming together to do something good. Everyone says how much fun it is, she said.
The Marketplace:
City police sponsored 11 local families, wrapped gifts for the children and then delivered them with the help of city reghters. The agencies participated in the Magic of PLEASE SEE MAGIC/3-A Christmas charity, which is helped 185 families throughout Washtenaw County this year.
