Overall Result Determination
The IESOL examination comprises three parts: Listening, Reading and Writing. To pass the examination, you need to achieve at least a pass in two of the three parts and at least a narrow fail in the third part. There are three possible overall grades: First Class Pass, Pass and Fail. The table below shows what the requirements for each grade are.

Assessment of Listening and Reading

The Listening and Reading Sections of the examination are assessed based on the number of correct answers you give. No marks are deducted for wrong answers, so your total for each of these sections is the total of your correct answers. The only exception to this is questions 1 and 2 in Part 4 of the Reading Section of the C1 (Expert) level, which are worth 2 marks each. All other questions in all listening and reading tasks at all the levels of the IESOL assessment are worth one mark each.

Assessment of Writing
The Writing Section of the IESOL exam requires the candidate to produce two pieces of written language. At level B1, there are also closed tasks requiring the candidates to fill in forms and identify and correct errors. Details of the task content of each part as well as the maximum marks awarded are given below. The weight of rucksacks has become such an issue for schoolchildren that some schools are banning their use during school hours, weighing those that look too heavy for the student and even calling in special doctors to warn students about the dangers of carrying heavy loads.

The heavy backpack problem has become so common that many schools, especially secondary schools, have backpack policies. This means that teachers who think that a student is carrying a backpack that is too heavy may tell that students to lighten their load. 5

Often, schools provide lockers or cubbies for students to keep books

in when they aren't being used. Another technique becoming popular is called "double booking," in which two sets of books are used, one for students to keep at home and another set kept in the classroom. The middle grades are of most concern because primary school students do not carry as many books and older students are presumed to be more physically developed or able to bring books to school in cars. On average, secondary school students have about five textbooks.

Experts say that for every 20 lbs. of bodyweight, you should only carry 3 lbs. in your backpack. This equals 15%. Other recommendations go as low as 6% of your body weight. This means many students are at risk for real injuries!

If it were up to me, the weather would be hot and sunny every day. Good thing it's not up to me. The Earth needs rain and snow. Without a reliable supply of water, we would have nothing to drink, nothing to sustain our crops. Swimming pools would be empty. Lawns would have no grass. Electricity would be expensive. Plants would die; animals would follow.

Such a water shortage may sound extreme, but it's happening right now in parts of the western United States. An area called the Colorado River Basin, which stretches from Wyoming to Arizona, is in the middle of the worst drought in at least 500 years. Rivers in this region are at their lowest levels ever recorded. If the drought continues, the results could be disastrous. The river basin is a major source of water for big cities, including Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. Entire ecosystems depend on this water, as do ranchers and many other people who live and work in the area.

Extreme weather and natural disasters are a normal part of life on Earth. Tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes destroy houses and kill people. Droughts are also menacing. They can last for decades. No one knows how to predict or stop them. In fact, many things that people do make the problem worse. The worst thing that people do is waste water.

Experts say that major droughts in the 1200s and 1300s may have driven the Native American Anasazi out of places such as Mesa Verde in Colorado and Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. "Water is life," says geologist John Dohrenwend of Teasdale, Utah. "If you don't have it, the land can't support life." Out West, rivers and flood plains make up just 3 percent of the land area, Dohrenwend says. But these 3 percent support a full 90 percent of the region's plant and animal life.

Scientists are just beginning to understand the conditions that lead to droughts. They're finding that small changes in the flow of air and water can have a huge effect on climate around the globe.

If people want to continue living with cheap electricity and clean water, they'll need to find ways to use less of the precious liquid. In fact, the drought in the western U.S. might just be a wakeup call for all of us, no matter where we live. "In some ways, the problem sounds like a simple one of not enough water" Dohrenwend says. But it's really more complicated than that. "When you start to look at what goes on in a river flowing from the mountains to the sea, all the things we as human beings use it for, and all of what actually happens during a drought, a lot of what is going to happen isn't necessarily obvious," he says. "It could cause things we don't want to happen much sooner than we might think."
