Mayors message
2012 a good year for local
government. PAGE 6
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Shamong Sun
Now that the holidays have passed, the
Shamong Township Committee has begun
planning for 2013.
One of the top priorities includes the
budget and if there will be tax increases.
The 2012 municipal budget was a total of
$2,737,782.97.
Mayor Jon Shevelew doesnt believe a tax
increase will be necessary.
While we are very early in the budget
process, as always, the committee looks at
tax increases as a last resort, said
Shevelew. We continue to do a good job in
controlling our expenses but until we have
final numbers from Trenton regarding our
share of tax revenue we won't be able to
lock down our numbers.
While a tax increase may not be a priori-
ty on the list of tasks for 2013, creating rev-
enue for Shamong Township is.
We continue to look for additional
sources of revenue to offset the township's
operating expenses. We have been moving
ahead with plans for a township cemetery,
said Shevelew.
Currently, the closest cemeteries are lo-
cated in Medford and Southampton, forcing
Shamong residents to make funeral
arrangements in neighboring towns.
The project, however, could be helpful to
the township.

The 2012 IMAA Recreation Soccer Season has come to an end. Thanks goes out to all the dedicated
coaches, parents, and most importantly the players for making it a great experience for everyone.
The town is truly lucky to have had the chance to strengthen the program this year thanks to the
many wonderful volunteers that helped along the way. The expansion of the new fields at the new
Stoney Creek Complex is hoped to create an even better experience for the upcoming 2013 season.

Burlington County Freeholder
Joseph Donnelly recently an-
nounced the county would once
again recycle Christmas trees
free of charge.
To be eligible for free disposal,
residents or municipalities
should bring the trees to the Re-
source Recovery Complex in Flo-
rence and Mansfield as a separate
load- that is, not mixed with
trash. No artificial or flocked
trees can be accepted.
All plastic bags, ropes, decora-
tions, garland, tinsel, ornaments,
lights, stands, wires and nails
should be removed.
Each town handles tree, brush
and yard waste differently, so resi-
dents should contact their munic-
ipality to see if they offer curb-
side collection of Christmas trees
for recycling.
For details on treecycling call

day, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., or Saturday, 7

All dogs over six months of age
are required by the state to be
properly licensed. All 2013 dog li-
censes are currently available at a
cost of $5 if your dog has been
spayed or neutered and $8 if not.
Please provide proof of spay or
neuter and a valid rabies certifi-
cate when requesting a new dog
license.
Rabies must be valid through
to Nov. 1, 2013 in order to qualify
for a 2013 license.
A free rabies clinic is sched-
uled for March 23, from 9 a.m. to
noon at the Shamong Municipal
Garage.
Dog licenses will be available
at that time for your convenience.

The Tuesday, Jan. 1 recycling
collection has been rescheduled
to today, Wednesday, Jan. 2 due to
the New Years holiday.
Please be sure you place your

This project could provide a
significant source of ongoing rev-
enue for the township, and we are
hoping to bring these efforts to
fruition during the coming year,
said Shevelew.
According to the mayor, the
possibility of building a commu-
nity center may be on the 2013
agenda.
We began discussing the pos-
sibility of building a community
center for the town, said
Shevelew. There has been an on-
going need to provide indoor fa-
cilities for use by various commu-
nity groups. We have begun to ex-
plore our options in that area and
will be looking for input from the
community over the next few
months as to the type of require-
ments that need to be met.
Currently, there is no timeline,
location for the project or approx-
imate cost.
The township was awarded a
grant over a year ago for the
Stoney Creek soccer complex.
The second phase of construc-
tion for our soccer complex at
Stoney Creek was completed this
past fall, said Shevelew. And
with any luck, and some fast
growing grass, we should begin to
see use during 2013.
There have been no updates on
the PSE&G clear-cutting issue
stemming from August.
The residents of Packenah
Trail filed a petition with the NJ
Board of Public Utilities in Sep-
tember for some sort of resolu-
tion.
Public utilities seems like the
best option and well see where
that takes us, said township
manager Sue Onorato in Septem-
ber.
The petition was filed well be-
fore Hurricane Sandy made land-
fall in New Jersey.
PSE&G responded to the peti-
tion after 22 days, two days later
than the 20-day deadline.
Following the destruction of
Hurricane Sandy, PSE&G has
been undertaking the task of
restoring power to thousands of
customers who were without elec-
tricity as a result of the storm.
We do not believe they re-
sponded in a timely manner,
said Onorato. With the storms
that blew through the area back-
to-back, Im sure theyre busy
with more than [the clear cutting]
issue, but they had time before
the storm hit.
Currently, the township is wait-
ing for another response from
PSE&G.
Shamong Townships reorgani-
zation meeting will be held on
Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m. Immediately fol-
lowing will be a regular meeting
at 9:25 p.m. at the municipal
building located at 105 Willow
Grove Road.

Happy New Year, Shamong!
It never ceases to amaze me at how fast
the years seem to go, as I get older. Despite
all of natures disruptions during 2012, I
hope the year was good for everyone.
It was a good year for our local govern-
ment.
Once again, we managed to come in
under budget without any increase in
taxes. As I finish my eighth year on the
committee, I am still amazed at the won-
derful job our township employees do in
getting things done while still protecting
our tax dollars.
The second phase of construction for
our soccer complex at Stoney Creek was
completed this past fall and with any luck
(and some fast growing grass) should
begin to see use during 2013.
Unfortunately, as a nation, we continue
to wrestle with a dysfunctional federal gov-
ernment. As I am writing this we all basi-
cally have one foot dangling over the fiscal
cliff.
Have you
stopped to think
how totally absurd
this whole thing
is?
Think about
how we got here.
The Congress,
along with the
president, agree to
set up a bi-parti-
san commission to
deal with the ever-
growing debt prob-
lem. They are sure that the commission
(Simpson/Bowles) will come up with solu-
tions that they all can live with. They are
so sure of this, that they place a bet.
If the commissions recommendations
are not implemented, they pass a bill that
will force the government to implement a
draconian solution that is scary enough so
that both sides will agree to the commis-
sions recommendations. Turns out that
neither side liked the commissions recom-
mendations so here we are, faced with the
draconian solution that nobody ever
thought would come to pass.
So what really happens if we go over the
cliff ?
At first, not much of anything, but then
it starts to get a bit complicated.
First off, everybodys tax rates will re-
turn to the rates in effect in the late 90s in-
cluding things like the estate tax and an in-
creased capital gains tax. That will in-
crease tax revenues this year by $536 bil-
lion. The government will also have to re-
duce spending by $110 billion between mili-
tary and operational budgets.
In addition, there are a few other annoy-
ing issues floating around out there. The
farm bill, which expires Dec. 31, will force
Mayor: 2012 a good year for local government
Jon Shevelew
MAYORS MESSAGE
T
here are all kinds of great rea-
sons to replace the $1 bill with a
$1 coin.
For example, the government says it
would save taxpayers billions of dol-
lars over the next several decades. And
who doesnt want to save billions of
tax dollars?
Vending companies, too, would like
to see the switch. Anyone who has
tried unsuccessfully to jam a dollar bill
into a machine that is, well, less than
perfect, understands the vending com-
panies sentiments.
The problem is that weve tried this
before, and it didnt end well. Remem-
ber, about a decade ago, the Sacagawea
coin? Before that, the Susan B. Antho-
ny? Before that? Well, there have been
dollar coins in the United States pretty
much since the Continental Congress
met.
Americans just dont seem to like
the $1 coin. Some complain that they
are too hard to distinguish from the
quarter. Others note that its much eas-
ier to cram 10 $1 bills into your wallet
than it is to carry 10 $1 coins in your
pocket.
Whatever the reason, Americans
have rejected a move to the $1 coin. Re-
peatedly and resoundly.
So lets forget about this idea and
focus on a few other monetary
thoughts that make more sense.
How about making $1 bills that last
longer than five years? That reduces
the need to pull old ones from circula-
tion and replace them with new ones.
And lets figure out a way to make
producing a penny cost less than a
penny, and make producing a nickel
cost less than a dime. Switch metals, or
just do away with them altogether. Es-
pecially the pennies. Not much you can
get for a penny these days.
But keep the $1 bill. At least for now.
At least until inflation puts it into the
category of the penny: not really worth
producing any longer.
in our opinion
The $1 coin
Havent we tried this already? And failed?
Dollar bill blues
Yes, removing the $1 bill from circula-
tion and replacing it with a $1 coin
would save tax dollars. Except, nobody
really wants to use $1 coins. Weve tried
to use them in the past, but society has
rejected them. So why bring up the
idea again?

This will drive the price of milk
up to around $8 gallon. This law
has been routinely waived, as far

all know, there is nothing that is
routine in this malfunctioning

Dec. 31. We have already seen
what happens to our credit rating
when the Congress cannot act
and this one could be just as bad
effectively raising the cost of

You can run campaigns based
on ideology. You can take all the
strong stands you want when you
are not trying to govern. But once
you have to govern, you must
quickly learn that the art of gov-
erning is compromise.
In a democracy as divided as
ours, you dont get everything you
want and neither does the other
side. But both sides have to give.
Its time to stop the rhetoric, do
the job they are getting paid to do

to medical specialists to folks new to the workplace.
We are involved with a multi-trillion/year deregulation
in telecommunications and now, in the deregulation of
energy! We work with numerous Fortune 100
companies on their back end. In Spring 2011, we
were featured on Prime Time Television based on what
we've done. We teach all aspects of the business.
