Around Town Page 2 ---------------Milestones ChurchChat Page 3 ---------------LibraryParks &Recreation Page 4 ---------------Sports Page 4 ---------------See attached photo (L-R) Thomas Watts-Norwalk, Andrea Mesenburg-Huron, Lisa AumanNew London, Cherry Stacey-Castalia, Sarah Jackowicz-New London NORWALKFisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk was recently honored with an A Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. The A score was awarded in the latest update to the Hospital Safety ScoreSM, the A, B, C, D or F scores assigned to U.S. hospitals based on preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. Fisher-Titus is one of 15 percent of the 2,619 U.S. hospitals rated by Leapfrog to earn an A score. In Ohio, Fisher-Titus was one of 35 hospitals out of 111 rated that received an A score. Leapfrogs Hospital Safety Score was compiled under the guidance of the nations leading experts on patient safety and is designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and their families. Our patients safety and well-being are top priorities of our Medical Center employees and physician team, said Patrick J. Martin, President of Fisher-Titus. This designation reflects the continual focus on patient safety expected at the Medical Center. Just recently, Fisher-Titus implemented new innovative germ-zapping room-disinfecting technology to keep high risk areas in the hospital even safer from microorganisms that cause infections ensuring an extra level of protection for patients. In addition, FisherTitus has received a variety of awards on the state and local level for successful hospital safety programs and superior employee safety. The Medical Center also is a member of the Huron County Safety Council. Hospitals like Fisher-Titus Medical Center that earn an A have demonstrated their commitment to their patients and their community, said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. I congratulate FisherTitus Medical Center for its safety excellence, and look forward to the day when all hospitals will match this standard. To see Fisher-Titus Medical Centers scores as they compare nationally and locally, visit the Hospital Safety Score website at www. hospitalsafetyscore.org, which also provides information on how the public can protect themselves and loved ones during a hospital stay. People can also check their local hospitals score on the free mobile app, available at www.hospitalsafetyscore.org. Calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Groups nine-member Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospitals overall capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries, and medical and medication errors. The panel includes: John Birkmeyer (University of Michigan), AshishJha (Harvard University), Lucian Leape (Harvard University), Arnold Millstein (Stanford University), Peter Pronovost (Johns Hopkins University), Patrick Romano (University of California, Davis), Sara Singer (Harvard University), Tim Vogus (Vanderbilt University), and Robert Wachter (University of California, San Francisco).

Lady Tigers Fall 53-46 in Milan
For the last game before Christmas break for area basketball teams, the young Huron girls squad travelled to Edison High School. The Chargers came out in an aggressive full court press that seemed to stun the Tigers for much of the first quarter. Then, led by sophomore Audra Wiseharts 10 second quarter points, Huron roared back from a double digit deficit to trail Edison by only one point, 23-22 at the half. Unfortunately, the visitors were never able to game control of the game during the second half and lost 53-46.

Sock it to me
EHOVE Global Business Management students recently participated in a worthwhile cause called Socks for Seniors to help local senior citizens. Global Business Management student Brittany Miller (South Central HS) played a major role in planning and volunteering her time for this cause. I got involved in this cause because it helps seniors who are in need of many supplies, including socks, said Miller. Classmates helped Miller collect socks and manage boxes throughout EHOVEs buildings across campus. A total of 177 pairs of socks were collected and distributed to Twilight Gardens Nursing Home in Norwalk. This was a great initiative and well done, said Global Business Management Instructor Jen Steinbrick participated as well. This was a great cause and very successful. A great idea for the future as well. I was shocked with how many pairs of socks were donated, said Miller. Mrs. Steinbrick was a great help and was very helpful at directing me on who I should see to approve this effort, said Miller. EHOVE Career Center is a leading career tech school in Milan Township. This high school and adult education facility draws students from a variety of locales, and serves multiple school districts in Erie, Huron and Ottawa Counties.
