TASK 9 FORMAL PROPOSAL

Title of magazine I have chosen to name my magazine Slash; this is because its short and catchy and also conveys an edgy feel to it, which perfectly describes the style of magazine as it has got its own style of indie music. The word slash could also be used to represent a decorate cut, as in something quite different but beautiful and intricate. Choice of genre I have chosen indie/rock as my genre, as I wanted to challenge myself and focus my study and a type of genre I dont to very often but am still familiar with. But its a style of music I know a lot of people listen to and that it is popular amongst many. The magazine I have used as inspiration for my own is Q magazine because its mainly focused on indie style of rock and isnt stereotypically what youd assume rock is like as a genre. My Target audience Indie/rock music has a typical target audience of males of the age 16-21; however I am choosing to challenge this by aiming the magazine at both females and males aged between 16-21. However I have also decided to use a white female to be the front cover rather than a white male, this is since indie/rock music now has a wider target audience of females as well. And this would be effective so the magazine can be used to attracts all different types of readers and eliminate an element of sexism. Initial ideas for Front Cover For my front cover, I am planning to use a close up shot of a indie/rock female artist, who is dressed in dark or original clothing and with a more serious expression, maybe also using black and white images to make it look more effective and thus creating a powerful image. For the sell lines, I would like it to be related to the artist on the front cover, latest information of gigs and popular artists in the genre today. Initial ideas for My Contents page For my contents page, the masthead will be a large S to represent the name of my magazine, following by contents, which will be placed in contrasting colours in order to stand out. I will also place all the features along the side which will be categorized. Whilst on the other side, there will be 1 dominant image of the cover girl, followed by 3 smaller images of other artists (male), to show other features and variety in the magazine. I will also be adding an editors note to my readers. Initial ideas for my article For the double page spread, I intend to do an interview with the cover girl (but Ill make sure she looks very different to the cover image (clothes, background, type of shot etc) and it will be based on a female in the indie/rock industry. It will not be dominantly text based, as I will use the page to devote to a main image, this way readers are able to find out her personality by giving a visual

representation. I will do this by using one main image, perhaps with some smaller images scattered around the page but the focus on one main image. Initial ideas for photographs The front cover photography, I have decided to use a medium shot of my female artist. For the contents I will use the dominant image of an MCU shot of the artist. However I have also chosen to have 3 other images, which will be close ups of different features of the magazines, I will use a mixture of males and females to show the magazine can also attract males. Lastly for the double page spread, I want to use 4 different camera shots, to express the artist in the interview, I have chosen to use a close up to reveal facial expressions, a long shot to show her whole body language, a medium close up to focus the attention on her. And lastly a medium long shot to reflect what her style is like. Furthermore I have used these shot types, as they most commonly found within indie/rock magazines. Ill probably go for a plain background-maybe white with black shadows. For the cover, but would like a striking, mysterious kind of feel for the background in the article with all the focus of the characters facial expressions.
