VII Read these descriptions of two holidays in two different countries. Then circle the correct words. Festivals Many people in Japan are Buddhists, and they believe reverence for ones ancestors is very important. Obon is an annual Buddhist holiday. It is believed that during this time, ancestors spirits return to the world to visit their relatives. The holiday is traditionally celebrated in mid-August. As part of the celebration, families hang lanterns outside their houses to guide their ancestors spirits. There are also special dances called bon odori. Families visit their relatives graves and make altars in their homes where they leave food offerings. At the end of Obon, the lanterns are put into rivers to guide the spirits back to their world. Mexico has a similar holiday. During the first days of November, Mexicans celebrate the Day of the Dead. The traditions vary throughout the country, but in general families build altars in their homes to welcome their dead. They often guide the dead to the houses with flower petals spread outside the door. Families spend the nights of November 12 in the cemeteries. First they clean the family grave site and light candles. They spend the night in the cemetery, eating and drinking together.
