Working Towards Level 3b

Maths targets for ________________________________________________ Date set Target Solving Problems I can choose and use appropriate operations (including x/) to solve word problems, and appropriate ways of calculating: mental, mental with jottings, pencil and paper. I can make and investigate general statements about familiar numbers and shapes. I can develop an organized approach as I get into recording my work on a problem. 1st star 2nd star 3rd star 4th star 5th star Date Achieved

I am beginning to develop my own ways of recording. I can check my work and make appropriate corrections.

I can respond to What if? questions.

I can use and interpret mathematical symbols and diagrams. I can choose my equipment appropriate to the task, including calculators.

Calculations

I can use mental recall of +/- facts to 20 in solving problems involving larger numbers. I can +/- mentally 2 digit numbers using known facts and place value. I can add and subtract numbers with 3digits using written methods. I can use mental recall of the 2, 3, 4, 5 and

10 multiplication tables and derive the associated division facts.

I can solve whole-number problems involving x and , including those that give rise to remainders. I am beginning to understand the role of =, the equals sign, e.g. solves balancing problems such as 7 10 = 82 . I recognize negative numbers in contexts such as temperature. I recognize some fractions that are equivalent to 1/2 +/- 1,10,100 to any number. I can round up or down after simple division.

I can multiply a two-digit number by 2, 3, 4 or 5. I can find a small difference by counting up (bridging through 10 or 100).
Numbers and the number system

I can read and write whole numbers to 1000.

I can multiply integers by 10 or 100. I can recognize multiples of 2,3,4,5 and 10. I am beginning to use decimal notation for money. I am beginning to relate fractions to division. I recognize simple fractions that are several parts of a whole. I can count back through zero.

I can use my understanding of place value to multiply/divide whole numbers by 10 (whole

number answers). I recognize and record fractions that are several parts of the whole such as 3/4, 2/5.
Measures

I am beginning to use notation for m and cm.

I can read labelled divisions accurately. I can use standard units of time in a range of contexts. I can read simple scales, e.g. increments of 2, 5 or 10. I can read a 12-hour clock and generally calculate time durations that do not go over the hour.
Space and Shape

I can classify 2D and 3D shapes using mathematical properties. I can sketch a simple reflection.

I recognize horizontal and vertical lines. I can sort objects and shapes using more than one criterion, e.g.pentagon, not pentagon and all edges the same length/not the same length. I can plot positions on a grid.

I recognize right angles in shapes in different orientations. I recognize right-angled and equilateral triangles.

I can relate 3-D shapes to drawings and photographs of them, including from different viewpoints.
Handling Data

I can solve a given problem by organizing, extracting and interpreting information presented in simple tables and lists.

I can construct bar charts and pictograms where the intervals or symbols represent a group of units (2s, 10s). I can interpret data in Venn and Carroll diagrams (2 criteria). I can construct bar charts and pictograms, where the symbol represents a group of units, e.g. I can represent sorting using one or two criteria typical of level 2 and 3 mathematics, e.g. shapes sorted using properties such as right angles and equal sides. I can read scales labelled in twos, fives and tens, including reading between labelled divisions such as a point halfway between 40 and 50 or 8 and 10.
