Topic 1: The HPV Vaccine Debate

Information Necessary to Understand Topic

Potential Sources

Basic Overview: It helps protect against cancers or other diseases that occur from sex.

What it Does Protect Against: 1. Anal cancer 2.penile cancer 3. vaginal cancer % of Cervical Cancer Protection: 75% How Many Shots:3

What it Doesnt Protect (Think!): 1. Anal cancer 2.penile cancer 3. vaginal cancer % of Genital Wart Protection: 90% Is there a shot for boys? What is it called? Gardasil

My Level of Agreement: Highlight or Underline One (I think this is.) Really Really Bad For Good for Society Society Potential Advantages Potential Disadvantages 1.protects against few cancers 1. does not insure protection + -

2. possibility of cancer 3. not very responsible -

2. can be more sexually active + 3. teaches you to think first +

Does this promote promiscuity or should we take advantage of something that could potentially help us? Yes it makes people feel more assured when they have vaccines, so they take advantages of it.

Cost:$130 Level 5/Extra Credit/Going Beyond: Define Herd Immunity and explain how it applies to the debate. Herd immunity is the idea of if one person gets a vaccine, there is a less probability others will get the disease.

Topic 2: Emergency Contraception (Plan B)

Information Necessary to Understand Topic
before, to prevent pregnancy.

Potential Sources

Basic Overview: Emergency contraception is used after sex, rather than

Intended Use (Why people use it):

Emergency contraception provides up to five days in which to potentially prevent pregnancy.

How close to failed / no contraceptives: (Time Frame?) 3 days

Do You Need a Prescription?: For those under 17, a prescription is needed

Cost: $10- $70

My Level of Agreement: Highlight or Underline One (I think this is.) Really Really Bad For Good for Society Society Potential Advantages Potential Disadvantages 1. only 3% of women taking them 1. no protection for STDs become pregnant if taken 24 hours of sexual intercourse + 2. only need prescription if under 2. nausea 18 + 3. has a shelf life of 2-5 years 3. irregular period + -

Mechanism of action-how it works: Emergency contraceptive pills prevent pregnancy primarily, or perhaps exclusively, by delaying or inhibiting ovulation

Does this promote people not taking accountability for their choices or provide an alternative to someone not wanting to get pregnant? Yes, people feel they can rely on this pill, so they do not have to worry about future consequences that come with becoming sexually active

Level 5: How is this similar/different than the abortion pill (RU-486)? It is different from the abortion pill because when taking emergency contraceptives, the woman has
not ovulated yet. The baby has not formed yet in the womans womb.

Topic 3: The Condom Availability Debate

Basic Overview:Condoms availability is a highly controversial topic. Some believe condoms should be actively promoted to help prevent disease .

Provide one stat on teen pregnancy.

34 percent of teenagers have at least one pregnancy before they turn 20

Provide one stat on teen pregnancy. 79 percent of

teenagers who become pregnant are unmarried.

My Level of Agreement: Highlight or Underline One (I think this is.) Really Really Bad For Good for Society Society Potential Advantages Potential Disadvantages 1. lower teen pregnancy rates 1. condoms do not reduce pleasure + -

Cite: http://www.teenhelp.com/teenpregnancy/teen-pregnancy-statistics.html

Cite:http://www.teenhelp.com/teenpregnancy/teen-pregnancystatistics.html In your opinion do these statistics warrant public educations involvement? That is not for me to say because this is purely based on morality and values. What does a schools condom availability program look like? Who gets condoms, where, when and how? Someone comes in to discuss the importance of a condom, but it does not promote sex. It promotes safe sex to those who are going to be sexually active.

2. easily obtainable +

2. teens will be more likely is involve themselves in sexual activity 3. teens will heavily rely on condoms -

3. lower the chances of getting diseases +

So the big question is how would condom availability affect the student body? Does it promote unhealthy behavior or are you providing a healthy outlet for those that will do it anywaysif so is it even a schools place to get involved ? It shows that safe

sex is promoted, not just sex. So this is not the worst thing in the world.

Level 5/Extra Credit/Going Beyond: What does your research say/cite? Do condoms make a difference? Cite at least 1 study and the results.

Time Frame: 30 days

Approved Locations? Fire station, adoption center, clinic

1. give baby a safe home + 2. stable home + 3. loving parents +

1. hateful parents 2. not sufficiently provided for 3. baby never gets to know real parents -

What happens to parental rights? You no longer have a say in that childs life.

What is Illinois Law exactly?

Does this promote people not taking accountability for their choices or provide an alternative to someone not able to provide for a child?

Level 5: How do state laws vary on this?
