WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
Biomaterials, recognized as a new class of materials in the Materials Science community, are being developed in last few decades for human health care. The design and development of biomaterials requires the integration of the concepts and expertise from two widely different disciplines, i.e. Materials Science & Engineering and Biological Science. While such integration is not an easy task by any means, the researchers have put their extensive efforts in this direction. The importance of the field of biomaterials and Bio-Engineering as an area of interdisciplinary research is increasingly being noticed in the Engineering community and it is being reflected with the new Bio-Engineering initiative at IISc, Bangalore as well as academic courses on this subject is being taught at undergraduate and graduate level in many of the topmost universities, including in IITs. In order to ensure continuous growth of the field of Biomaterial science and Bio-Engineering in India, BIOMAT 12 has been planned to educate and train the young scientists from various academic institutions / R&D labs of 35 years of age or below.
