Chess is incorporated into the scholastic curriculums of approximately 30 nations across the globe. Educators around the world acknowledge that chess is a powerful tool for developing higher order thinking skills, creativity, numerical and verbal aptitudes, and memory. Brooklyns Intermediate School 318, a Title I school, has successfully used weekly lessons in chess as a means of boosting the students cognitive flexibility (the ability to see alternative solutions to problems, to think outside the box, to negotiate unfamiliar situations) and cognitive selfcontrol (the ability to inhibit an instinctive or habitual response and substitute a more effective one) with remarkable results. (How Children Succeed by Paul Tough) Did you know that St. Thomas of Villanova also offers this opportunity to its students? Look in your family envelope this month for Chess Wizards information and sign-up sheets. What are you waiting for? Not since the 19th century has anyone who started playing after the age of 14 become a chess grand master. Join Chess Wizards today!
