World of Wearable Art - WOW 2013 - National Design Talent Contest - Indian Entries

by Fashion Design Council of India on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 4:57pm The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) is pleased to announce the National Design Talent Contest. This competition is a talent search in the field of design across all leading design schools in India. The contest will culminate with the winners participating in the World of Wearable Arts Show/ Awards (WOW) held in September 2013 in New Zealand.

World of Wearable Art is a unique fashion celebration. The participants create art using the human body as the canvas. It is about getting away from the commercial aspects of fashion to express their art with complete freedom. There are no creative boundaries and wearable art is created from materials as diverse as car parts, fishhooks, business cards, sausage skins, human hair and salmon skins etc.

Based on the sections the participants needs to send in sketches. The jury will shortlist applicants who will get a chance to showcase their work in New Delhi. The Shortlisted applicants will be further judged and shortlisted by the WOW jury to arrive at the list of finalists whose creations will be showcased at the WOW show in New Zealand.

Please send us entries i.e. sketches, from your students or young alumni (max. of past 3 years) latest by January 14, 2013 to the official FDCI Address mentioned below. The participants are requested to send in details regarding:

1. Their respective Institute/College 2. Their Course 3. Currently in which semester 4. The year of passing out (a copy of your degree/ certificate) 5. Contact details.

The students will be given 3 weeks to prepare their garments once shortlisted.

SECTIONS - WOW 2013 - National Design Talent Contest

Based on the sections, the participants needs to send in sketches (maximum 6 sketches) of his/her collection along with the complete construction details regarding the garment. The participants are requested to send in details regarding their respective Institute/College, Course, Currently in which semester/ the year of passing out (a copy of your degree/ certificate) and contact details.

There are seven sections in 2013: Each section* has NZ$9,700 worth of prize money.

Please remember: Designers are responsible for ensuring their entry complies with copyright guidelines and that it does not infringe a third

partys intellectual property rights. WOW Ltd reserves the right to disqualify any entry which does not, in WOWs opinion, conform to the guidelines, or which infringes a third partys intellectual property.

Mainfreight/Duffy Books Children's Section:- Reinterpret the Tutu- Recreate the theatrical drama of the ballet tutu turning inventive ideas and interesting materials into a work of art to adorn the body. These garments are to be designed by adults for children to wear. Example: SYNCHRONISED SILLINESS, Karen Gurney, Rangiora

American Express Open Section:- This section has no thematic boundaries and gives the designer complete freedom in concept, construction and materials. This section encourages a high degree of originality and innovation. Example: DRAGGED THROUGH A HEDGE, Gillian Saunders, Nelson

Weta Workshop Costume & Film Section:- The Crazy Curiosities of the Creature Carnival - Strange surreal characters meet in a world without time. A place where dreams and nightmares come to life. From the beautiful to the bizarre, mysterious to the grotesque, create a costume that crosses the boundaries of wearable art and film. Example: LA DANSE MACABRE, Mercy Brewer, Auckland

Tourism New Zealand Avant Garde Section :- Where art and fashion collide! Create a wearable work of art that is revolutionary, extravagant and extrovert but still stylish and made with skill. Be driven by dreams and fantasies, not commercial reality or the usual restrictions of fashion. Example: IN THE OP, Ling Lai Kit, Hong Kong

Gen-i Creative Excellence Section:- Art Forms in Nature- Gather your inspiration from the many images of Ernst Haekel and create a work of art to adorn the body. The geometrical shapes and natural forms seen in the illustrations of Ernst heakel have influenced artists, designers and architects to this day. Example: KIN(D)A PUFFER, Heather Wallace, Wellington

CentrePort Man Unleashed Section :- Psychedelic Revival- Create a garment inspired by the psychedelic era of the 1960's. A period of intensified sensory experience, colour and vivid imagery. Consider the optical and visionary art movements of the sixties (OP Art) experimentation with optical mixing to achieve dazzling colour effects and kaleidoscopically swirling patterns. Create a garment to adorn the man with illusion, shape and form. Example: WOODEN BE SEEN DEAD, Dinah & Mark Walker, Auckland

Air New Zealand South Pacific Section:- Gather inspiration from New Zealands rich Maori culture or other cultures of our South Pacific neighbours. Celebrate what it is like to live in New Zealand and the South Pacific the sea, beach, flora, fauna, birds, insects and the wide and wonderful personalities of our unique cultures. Example: MARQUISE RAWAHI, Beatrice Carlson, Auckland
