IE 4613/6613: Homework 6 Due 4/5/12 at 5:00 P.M.

Directions: Complete the assigned problems below. You may work in groups on the problems; however, you must submit an assignment that you completed INDIVIDUALLY. 1. A laboratory weighs filters from a coal mine to measure the amount of dust in the mine atmosphere. Repeated measurements of the weight of dust on the same filter vary normally with standard deviation of 1.2 mg because the weighing is not perfectly precise. The dust on a particular filter actually weighs 123 mg. Repeated weight measurements will then have the Normal distribution with mean 1=123 mg and standard deviation 1=1.2 mg. a. What is the probability that the laboratory collects a random sample of n1=25 weight measurements and found an average measure of 123.5 mg or higher for this filter? b. The coal mine is trying to adopt a new method to decrease the amount of dust. Assume the new method would change the average weight for a particular filter to 2=115 mg with a standard deviation of 2=2 mg. If the laboratory collect a random sample of n1=25 from the old method and a random sample of n2=16 from the new method, what is the probability that the sample means from the new method, x2 , will be at least 9 mg lower than the sample means, x1 , from the old method?

2. A set of data were collected for the length of a specific part. A random sample of 20 parts was measured. The sample mean was 5.16 inches with a standard deviation of 0.32 inches. Calculate the standard error for the sample mean.

3. The sample mean of the grades of 40 freshmen is used to estimate the true average grade of the freshmen class. If the average grade is found to be 76, and the standard deviation of all grades is known to be 10: a. Construct a 95% two-sided confidence interval on the true mean scores. b. Construct a 95% lower-confidence bound on the mean freshmen scores. Compare the lower bond of this confidence interval with the results in part a. What does it tell you?

4. An Izod impact test was performed on 20 specimens of PVC pipe. The sample mean is

x =1.25 and the sample standard deviation is s=0.25. Find a 99% lower confidence bound
on Izod impact strength.

5. Collect a sample of the average temperature in Starkville for the month of March (You can find data online at http://www.weather.com/weather/wxclimatology/daily/39759). a. Assume that we know from history that the standard deviation for temperature is 1.5 degree Fahrenheit. Construct a 95% two sided confidence interval on the true mean temperature. b. Assume that we dont know the overall standard deviation, construct a 95% two sided confidence interval on the true mean temperature.
