There is a modest and essenal places in every
liturgical celebraon for human rhetoric, but it is a
modestplace,subordinatetotheproclamaonofthe
wordofGodinscripture,subordinatetothesymbolic
aconofthewholeassembly.Impliedinallthisisthe
convicon that what is most important about public
worship is that we gather the sisters and brothers
together for a fesval, a special occasion, a
celebraon of the reign of God (not yet terribly
evident in daily life nor in the instuons of society),
that helps all of us feel so good about ourselves, so
important, so dignied, so precious, so free, so much
at one . . . not as escape, not merely in disncon to
daily roune, but in judgement, in the Lords
judgement on those ways and instuons. A
celebraonofthereignofGodthatgoeswaybeyond
the ght, drab, raonalisc, pedagogical exercises we
somemestomakeofitallthosedreadfulthemes
that we loveinto a large, broad, full human
landscape, where Jesus is truly the rstborn of a new
humanity,andwhereourotherliturgicaltools(fesval
excessandcoloursandtastesandtexturesandodours
and forms and touches) penetrate the Babel of our
words and points and arguments to heal the human
spirit and to raise it up in the covenant communitys
vision of new possibilies. Good liturgical celebraon,
likeaparable,takesusbythehairofourheads,lisus
momentarily out of the cesspool of injusce we call
home, puts us in the promised and challenging reign
ofGod,wherewearetreatedlikewehaveneverbeen
treatedanywhereelse.
