Kim Dotcoms new and improved file storage site Mega has launched with half a million users creating accounts in the first 14 hours. This has meant the site has reached maximum capacity and is already showing signs of buckling under pressure. There is much speculation that the website could be branded illegal like its predecessor Megaupload, but Dotcom and his legal team are adamant Mega is legal and are already making plans for the future. We want to give back, so we will be hiring New Zealanders here - we want to have customer support here, we will hire developers in NZ, web designers, said Dotcom. In the coming years we hope to create a few hundred jobs.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has revealed that he will be involved in a new Conan film. Not only that, it may be shot in NZ. In a recent interview Schwarzenegger said, I have asked them (Universal) now for the last ten years to get serious about the Conan series and to not look at it as a B-movie or just a cheap action movie. He also mentioned, one of the places theyre looking very closely right now is Jacksons studio in New Zealand. He says the studio is rushing to get this underway - they really want to get it done, so they want to start shooting sometime around the end of this year.

After nearly as much speculation as Lance Armstrongs believability, it has finally been revealed that Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) is making a come back later this year. Ron wont be starting his OWN channel and outing OPRAH on her rumoured diet enhancing drug taking. Instead he reunites with Brick Tamland, Champ Kind and Brian Fantana to ride the classy airwaves of Channel 4 News San Diego. Its a big call but we really hope they get this right.

SOUND CITY
We are very excited to partner with Red Bull to bring to life the Red Bull Thunderdome - our aim is to build a 3am house party right in the middle of the festival with the best of Auckland and abroad battling it out inside one of the strangest venues in the city Laneway Festival co-promoter Mark Kneebone says. The Thunderdome will be an enclosed area, shut off by huge black-out drapes with air-conditioning, lights, PA and DJs battling it out with their craftiest tunes. With room inside for 120 people to dance, rave and allow their wildest dreams to come true The Thunderdome will add a new dimension to an already power packed festival. The Red Bull Thunderdome will kick off mid afternoon and runs through to the end of the festival with the following lineup: Phelps & Munro , A Place to Bury Strangers DJs, DJ Mirror Balls and Squeeky Eye, Beach Pigs , Golden Axe , 95bFMs Pennie Black and Zac Arnold , Stinky Jim and Geezer Guy, Slutz with Kidz, This Is The Way The World Ends and Mellow Grave.

Sound City is a feature length documentary, directed by Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), about the human element of music, the lost art of analogue recording, and the history of Americas greatest unsung recording studio, Sound City. Sound City opened in 1969 and soon became known for churning out one rock and roll classic after another. Many of the seminal albums of the 70s, 80s and 90s were put on tape within these walls: Classics by Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Metallica and Nirvana. As technology advanced the human element was no longer necessary. Technology not only levelled the playing field, it also changed the game. Studios all over the world began to close their doors. Sadly, Sound City was no exception. Now its time for Dave to give something back. Hes invited many of the greatest recording artists to ever grace Sound Citys halls to help him make a new album on that legendary Neve console - which he purchased when Sound City closed its doors. Together, we see them explore the human element of making music and the lost art of analogue recording.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds are set to release their new album (fifteenth studio album) Push The Sky Away with a special live show at Her Majestys Theatre in London in Feb. Following on from 2008s Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!, it was recorded by regular Bad Seeds and Grinderman collaborator Nick Launay at La Fabrique studios, a 19th century mansion in the south of France. Although their sound tends to change considerably from one album to another, you can bet on the band blending together disparate genres, and tracks that provide a vehicle for Caves lyrical intrigue with violence, death, religion and love.

fEBRUARY
Formerly called BluesFeast, organisers have renamed the event, which has previously attracted nearly 1000 people for eight hours of music. Why? It better reflects what they are about and encompasses more than just toe-tapping blues. Theres also a fine selection of food and wine on sale, as well as boutique beers and other delicious drinks.
Foals new album Holy Fire will be the Oxford-based indie bands third, following debut album Antidotes and 2010s Total Life Forever. Holy Fire was recorded with producers Flood and Alan Moulder in London, and while the band has described the album as having some heavier moments and some dirtier moments, there are still plenty of the traditional sounds that the Foals are known for. The band released their second single My Number ahead of their recent Big Day Out performances in Australia, which has a real Curtis Mayfield groove and plenty of funk to it.

An iconic band for an iconic city attractions 150th birthday. Although the band is not turning 150, they are marking more than 20 years of great Southern hits and will be playing them at the anniversary celebrations of the Dunedin Botanic Gardens. Its a prestigious occasion, but The Chills will be adding a nice touch of rock n roll to the event.
Azealia Banks originally intended to release her debut album Broke With Expensive Tastes in September last year, but announced in August it would be delayed until February 2013. And while there werent many details on why, there are plenty who are keen to see what this Harlem rappers got up her sleeve, particularly after the single 212 from her four-track EP 1991; the beats, her effortless delivery, the genius sampling of Lazy Jays Float My Boat, whats not to like?! Yes we are excited for Azealias super-slick layered rhymes and the stark contrast between her rough raps and sweet singing style.

DAVID BOWIE
THE NEXT DAY
MARCH
Hes chosen to go on a Summer Holiday down to our part of the world. Its hard to believe the British pop crooner is still a) active, b) agile and c) still singing like he did at the peak of his career. Did we mention he is 72 years old? Daym!
Tue 08 Jan (Bowies 66th birthday) was a magical sort of day for Bowie fans, with the release of a new single, Where Are We Now?, produced by long term collaborator Tony Visconti (hes been producing Bowies albums since Space Oddity in 1969!) and recorded in New York. There has been much speculation, rumour and wishful thinking over the years about a new Bowie album, and seemingly out of the blue its announced his 30th studio recording and first album in 10 years is set for release this March. No doubt The Next Day will have an instantly familiar sound, because its David Bowies voice, and Visconti has also revealed that fans can expect funky, sleazy, and psychedelic songs, alongside several that rock out. Bring it on we say!
Its baaaaack! Taking over a different location, Silo Park, means the annual festival is bigger and runs alongside the waterfront, with plenty of shade, more grass, tables, chairs and umbrellas to get into the summer spirit. Now in its fourth year, the site location will still be the most unique music festival location, not to mention a nek level line up.
The members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs - once lovingly labelled by Rolling Stone as the goth, the nerd and the slut - have been busy over the past few years with solo projects, collabs, even composing and curating an orchestral work (Nick Zinner) but not too busy to do another album. Due for release in April, Mosquito will be the Yeah Yeah Yeahs fourth album and their first since 2009. While news of the new album had fans cheering, the response to the album artwork has been more like WTF? Created by Korean-born animator Beomsik Shimbe Shim, the neon-hued cover depicts a screaming spiky-haired baby in the clutches of a giant purple mosquito. But regardless of this interesting development, were expecting the edgy post-punk, dance floor-friendly tunes will sway punters in the end.

THE IMPOSSIBLE
GENERAL RELEASE
Managing to be both a darkly hilarious, rollickingly entertaining ride of a movie and also nearly three hours long, with scene after scene of densely crammed, unmistakeably excessive Quentin Tarantino dialogue, Django Unchained is his most exciting, accessible and satisfying film for ages. While there may be a bit more of a comic feel than Inglourious Basterds and a tale that hinges on an unlikely buddy bounty hunter pairing rather than Basterds ensemble, this is another Tarantino tale that sees him mete out punishment on historical evil through his characters. Rather than taking on Nazis, Django (Jamie Foxx) uses a chance encounter to wreak vengeance on the brutal oppressors of American slavery here. And boy do they deserve it, with Tarantino pulling no punches in depicting slavery as bitterly violent and revoltingly dehumanising, with some rather harrowing scenes

of abuse giving his hero an inarguable justification for a killing spree thatll have you cheering him on. Foxx does a great line in quiet Western hero, driven by emotions that when not internalised are more often revealed in action rather than words. And as in Basterds, Christoph Waltz revels in the opportunities Tarantinos script provides him in a gleeful performance as Djangos mentor, German bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz. The films other odd couple, plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his house slave Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson), also prove memorably entertaining in their roles, the cast as a whole matching Tarantinos own creative enthusiasm - a combination that makes this a must-see.

Transformed from a grungy nightclub into a classy, art dcor style venue, the first thing you notice about No 1 upon arrival is the impressive wall of top shelf spirits. Scaling the white brick wall, lit by beautiful lights, is every kind of whiskey, vodka, gin, rum (and more) you can think of. By day, the unassuming venue can host small groups or large work parties for a light tipple over lunch. Surrounded by bookshelves, the expansive space feels cosy, yet unobtrusive. By night, the bar is pumping with great beats and the top shelf spirits are coming down.

Ashes To Ashes
YOuR NEED TO KNOW WITH BAT FOR LASHES As one oF the indie realms more sullen darlings, Bat For lashes has an unmistakable brand of hypnotising, sullen charm. natasha Khans floats in the gloom, putting alchemists to envy as she channels it into compositions of haunting grandeur. What started out as writing on the side (after hours as a nursery school teacher) eventually made its way into the music consciousness- snapped up by hype machines proclaiming her as the next big thing. they were right. heres the history: Fur and Gold made its debut in 2006, earning nominations for the Mercury Music Prize and several categories of the Brit Award. Gaining confidence and picking up a steady snowball of public acclaim, Khan donned a desert-born alter ego named Pearl for 2009s Two Suns. Within weeks, the single daniel had spread through the blogosphere and gained the approval of the music world. Khan snagged the Ivor novello Award for Best contemporary song and received a nomination for MtVs Breakthrough Video of the Year for that track alone. After headlining music festivals, touring with coldplay and generally working herself to the bone, Khan decided to step back from the spotlight. I was very unrooted and felt Id lost myself a little bit. so, my main preoccupation was to feel sane again. After taking advice from close friends and people who love me, I decided to stay at home, make myself nice meals, go out for walks- I just sort of battened down the hatches. three years since her last release, Khan has finally made a return to the scene with her much-anticipated latest offering. Building on the experience over her years, the musical maturity was noted by critics media-wide: The Hanged Man appeared on top lists for all the heavyhitters, climbing to the higher tiers of those such as Rolling stone, Pitchfork and nMe (amongst many others). trumping her writers block and crushing the notorious, artist-defining challenge of the third albumKhan is well and truly back. A single listen to laura confirms just as much, and promises a laneway youll be bragging about for years yet.

THESE ARE THE DROIDS YOuRE LOOKING FOR. When WAs the last time you heard of a punk band garnering widespread critical acclaim? Yeah, I know. too long ago. the spotlights of the music scene have drifted off to calmer waters, latching onto all-tootame movements like chillwave and indie-folk (god I hate Justin Vernon so, so much). But dont you fret- things are in for a pleasant change. With the rocknroll ethos to their arsenal, this two-headed behemoth of sound have brought back grit and substance to the main stage. With their own special blend of crunch and clang, Japandroids are a band to be seen live. Arguably best-known for their on-stage presence, Brian King (guitar, vox) and david Prowse (drums, vox) rode a surge of popularity stemming from their frenetic and ear-splitting live shows. Marrying the gruffest of rocks chord progressions and punks general dont-give-a-fuck clamour, these pioneers of sound have stumbled onto something golden. We always need to figure out how a song can be super fucking intense the entire time. until that happens, its not done, mentions King. the duo toured extensively throughout the years 20092010, gaining popularity via word-of-mouth as they played over 200 shows in more than 20 countries. their initial sound was raw and untamed- primarily sprouting from the sheer urgency surrounding their first ePs and lP. Prowse muses over this fact. We didnt have a lot of time to record [Post-Nothing]. We just cranked it out as quick as we could, because we were recording it ourselves on our own dime, and we wanted to do it as fast as possible, basically. But it was this unabashed and fearless approach that catapulted them from obscurity to Pitchforks Best new Music choice with the track Young hearts spark Fire, effectively launching them into the international music consciousness. three years after their first album, the boys are back with their latest release: Celebration Rock. suffering through trials and tribulations aplenty, producer Jesse Gander managed to extract an offering of sound from the rockstar hooligans. the band reminisces on some favourite quotes from Gander in the recording process, pulling out gems like lets make this one a little more cruising down the highway, and a little less doing crystal meth on new Years... emerging several months later from the recording studio, Celebration Rock went on to soar in top lists from heavy-hitting names like spin, Pitchfork and Rolling stone. despite all the praise, Prowse still believes the journeys not quite over and done with yet. I think if you think of our lives as musicians, its craftsmanship. Were not artists, were more artisans. You know, I dont think we view ourselves as musical geniuses who can just make some sort of wonderfully beautiful record out of nothing. Its something that we work at. And if we keep working, hopefully well keep improving.

once you get past the all-new look of the games (Justin bieber-like) antagonist, fans will be relieved to hear that the franchises core essence is still intact. DmC is stylish, moody and oozing more cool than a tube of Macleans toothpaste (of the triple stripe variety). Dante is trapped in Limbo; a plain of existence between the real world and Hell, where evil can seep into our lives and corrupt our very souls. The offspring of both an angel and a demon (or Nephilim if you want to get technical), Dante is gifted/cursed with supernatural powers able to cast back the evil and save the human race from extinction. By cast back, we mean thrash the living bejesus out of. And its here that DmC excels. The combat has always been crucial to the franchise and despite a new team of developers at the helm, it retains the fluid and graceful feel to the relentless hack-slash n shoot gameplay. Due to Dantes mixed heritage, he can call on either angelic or demonic powers in the heat of battle, causing your attacks to be more virtuous, or rage-fueled on demand. By chaining together combos with a rhythmic finesse, the combat has depth and substance that seldom feels repetitive. Enemies require different strategies and despite the urge to use your fullon fire and brimstone powers, some will often require a more tactful approach and a calm demeanor rather than furious button mashing. DmC rewards players for gratuitous violence and every chained combo or special move earns you points to eventually give you a rank at the end of the level. Both newcomers and fans of the original game will feel right at home here, with enough variety and outlandish devastation to keep anyone entertained. A well-balanced upgrade system ensures that there are always new attacks and abilities on the horizon for you to pursue as well. Ninja Theory have been faithful to the original games, but still added enough of their own lick of originality to warrant the return. While there have been a few decisions that fans will disagree with, their stylish reboot of a beloved franchise is worthy of your hard-earned pennies if you enjoyed the original, or games like God of War and Bayonetta.
