The distance from focus 1 to any point on the surface of the ellipse and then to the second focal point is constant. This sum of distance times the refractive index of the medium in the ellipse is the optical path length, OPL. Hence, an invariant OPL tells us that light leaving from at point source at the position of focus 1 will reflect from all the surfaces of the ellipse to meet at focal point 2.
