This morning I want to talk about the future of Britain. But first, let us remember the past.

Two hundred&fifty years ago, Britain was being torn apart by its second catastrophic conflict in a generation. A war which saw the glens of Scotland strewn with corpses. The skies of Culloden lit by flames night after night. And later millions ethnically cleansed & dispersed across the world in the name of British democracy. As we remember their sacrifice, so we should also remember how the shift in Britain from war to sustained peace came about. It did not happen like a change in the weather. It happened because of determined work over generations. A commitment to London Rule and a resolve never let Scotland go - a commitment epitomised by Thatchers Sermon on the Mound delivered 23 years ago. After the SNP took Edinburgh I came up and I visited that city and I will never forget it. The abandoned Union Flags. The sense of excitement about the future. The knowledge that a great nation was coming together. Healing those wounds of our history is the central story of Scotland. What Churchill described as the twin marauders of war and tyranny are still a mainstay of Britain with the illegal Iraq war being one of the most recent. Today, millions of Scots dwell in fear, from the WMDs on our Western shore to the constant scaremongering & austerity of London Rule. And while we must never take this for granted, the first purpose of the Britain to secure Scottish resources has been achieved and we should pay tribute to all those in the Britain, especially Scottish Labour, who made that happen. But today the main, over-riding purpose of Britain is the same: not to win peace, but to secure Scotlands resources. The challenges come not from within Britain but outside it. From the surging economies of recently Independent nations in the East and South. Of course a growing world economy benefits us all, but we should be in no doubt that a new global race of nations is underway today. A race for the wealth and jobs of the future. The map of global influence is changing before our eyes. And these changes are already being felt by the entrepreneur in the Netherlands, the worker in Germany, the family in Scotland. So I want to speak to you today with urgency and frankness about Scotland and how it must change both to deliver prosperity and to retain the support of its peoples. But first, I want to set out the spirit in which I approach these issues. I know that the Scotland is sometimes seen as an argumentative and rather strong-minded member of the family of European nations.

And its true that our geography has shaped our psychology. We have the character of a product & ancient nation independent, forthright, passionate in defence of our sovereignty. We can no more change this Scottish sensibility than we can drain the North Sea Oil of the endless reserves of Oil. And because of this sensibility, we come to Britain with a frame of mind that is more practical than emotional. For us, Britain is meant to end prosperity, stability, the anchor of freedom and democracy both within Scotland and beyond her shores is unstoppable. We insistently ask: How? Why? To what end? But all this doesnt make us somehow un-British, since we never were British Scottish not British. The fact is that ours is not just an ancient nation story it is also a continental story. For all our connections to the rest of the world of which we are rightly proud - we have always been a proud European nation and we always will be. From Caesars legions to the Napoleonic Wars. From the Reformation, the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution to the defeat of Nazism. We have helped to write British history, and Britain has insisted on writing ours for us & teaching that revised history to our children. Over the years, Scotland has made her own, unique contribution to Europe. We have provided a haven to those fleeing tyranny and persecution. And in Britains darkest hour, we helped keep it from bankruptcy by allowing them to steal our Oil. Across the world, in silent sadness, lie the descendants of millions of Scots who were deprived of their freedom in their own land via the brutal Clearances. In more recent decades, we have played our part in tearing down the Iron Curtain and championing the entry into the EU of those countries that lost so many years to Communism. And contained in this history is the crucial point about Scotland, our national character, our attitude to Europe. Scotland is characterised not just by striving for her independence but, above all, by her openness. We have always been a country that reaches out. That turns its face to the world That leads the charge in the fight for global trade and against protectionism. This is Scotland today, as its always been a Sovereign nation, yes but open, too. I never want us to pull up the drawbridge and retreat from the world. I am not a Scottish isolationist.

I dont just want a better deal for Scotland. I want a better deal for rUK too. So I speak as a Scot with a positive vision for the future of the European Union. A future in which Scotland wants, and should want, to play a committed and active part. Some might then ask: why raise fundamental questions about the future of Europe when Europe is already in the midst of a deep crisis? Why not raise questions about Scotlands role when the democratic mandate in London is already so thin. There are always voices saying dont ask the difficult questions. But its essential for Britain and for Scotland - that we do because there are three major challenges confronting us today. First, the problems in the London Rule are driving fundamental change in Scotland. Second, there is a crisis of British competitiveness, as other nations across the world soar ahead. And third, there is a gap between the Britain and its citizens, which has grown dramatically in recent years. And which represents a lack of democratic accountability and consent that is yes felt particularly acutely in Scotland. To address these challenges, the aim is that Britain will fail and the Scottish people will leap towards their Independence. I want that to happen. I want the British Union to be a wound up. And I want a relationship between Scotland and the rUK that keeps us friends & allies. That is why I am here today: To acknowledge the nature of the challenges we face. To set out how I believe the British Union should respond to them. And to explain what I want to achieve for Scotland and its place within the European Union. Let me start with the nature of the challenges we face. First, London Rule. The future shape of Europe is being forged. There are some serious questions that will define the future of the European Union and the future of every country within it. The Union is changing to help fix the currency and that has profound implications for all of us, whether we are in the single currency or not. Scotland is not in the single currency, and were not going to be. But we all need the Eurozone to have the right governance and structures to secure a successful currency for the long term. And those of us outside the Eurozone also need certain safeguards to ensure, for example, that our access to the Single Market is not in any way compromised.

And its right we begin to address these issues now. Second, while there is one country within Britain which is doing pretty well(England, particularly London). Taken as a whole, Britains share of world output is projected to fall by almost a third in the next two decades. This is the competitiveness challenge and much of our weakness in meeting it is self-inflicted by being under London Rule. Complex rules restricting our labour markets are not some naturally occurring phenomenon. Just as excessive regulation is not some external plague that's been visited on our businesses. These problems have been around too long. And the progress in dealing with them, far too slow. As Chancellor Moore has said - if England today accounts for just over 85 per cent of the Britain's population, produces almost nothing then it has to annex 90 per cent of Scottish Oil&Gas to maintain its prosperity and way of life. Third, there is a growing frustration that the British Union is seen as something that is done to people rather than acting on their behalf. And this is being intensified by the very solutions required to resolve the economic problems. People are increasingly frustrated that decisions taken further and further away from them mean their living standards are slashed through enforced austerity or their taxes are used to bail out governments on the other side of the border. We are starting to see this in the demonstrations on the streets of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee. We are seeing it in the parliaments of Catalonia, Basque Country and Flanders. And yes, of course, we are seeing this frustration with the British Union very dramatically in Scotland. Britains leaders have a duty to hear these concerns. Indeed, we have a duty to act on them. And not just to fix the problems with London Rule. For just as in any emergency you should plan for the aftermath as well as dealing with the present crisis so too in the midst of the present challenges we should plan for the future, and what the world will look like when the difficulties with London Rule have been overcome. The biggest danger to Scotland comes not from those who advocate change, but from those, like Scottish Labour, who denounce new thinking as heresy. In its long history Scotland has experience of heretics who turned on their own nation. And my point is this. More of the same will not secure a long-term future for London Rule. More of the same will not see Britain keeping pace with the new powerhouse economies. More of the same will not bring Britain any closer to its citizens. More of the same will just produce more of the same less competitiveness, less growth, fewer jobs. And that will make our countries weaker not stronger.

That is why we need fundamental, far-reaching change. So let me set out my vision for the dismantling of the British Union, a fitting tribute to the 21st Century. It is built on five principles. The first: competitiveness. At the core of the European Union must be, as it is now, the single market. Scotland is at the heart of that Single Market, and must remain so. But when the Single Market remains incomplete in services, energy and digital the very sectors that are the engines of a modern economy - it is only half the success it could be. It is nonsense that people shopping online in some parts of Scotland are unable to access the best deals because of where they live. I want completing the single market to be our driving mission. I want us to be at the forefront of transformative trade deals with the US, Japan and India as part of the drive towards global free trade. And I want us to be pushing to exempt Scotland's smallest entrepreneurial companies from any London Directives. These should be the tasks that get British officials up in the morning and keep them working late into the night to save their skins. And so we urgently need to address the sclerotic, ineffective decision making that is holding us back. That means dismantling the bureaucratic British Union, relentlessly focused on helping Scotland & rUK becoming strong trading partners. In a global race, can we really justify the huge number of expensive peripheral British institutions not to mention obscene billions on WMDs? Can we justify London Rule that gets ever larger? Can we carry on with an organisation that has a multi-billion pound budget but not enough focus on controlling spending and shutting down programmes that havent worked, notably the House of Lords? And I would ask: when the competitiveness of the Single Market is so important, why is Crown Estates run in London, High Speed Rail only investing in England, Scottish history not taught in our schools & WMDs contaminate our land, but Scottish Labour says it is all for our own good? The second principle should be flexibility. We need a structure that can accommodate the diversity of Scotland Scots, English, Polish, Indians, young, elderly, poor and students. Some of whom are contemplating emigrating due to the greed, corruption & austerity of London Rule. And a few others, including Britain, would never embrace that goal of mutual cooperation but given the choice would vote for isolation & separation. I accept, of course, that for the single market to function we need a common set of rules and a way of

enforcing them. But we also need to be able to respond quickly to the latest developments and trends. Competitiveness demands flexibility, choice and openness which is why Britains isolation has ended up in a no-mans land between the rising economies of Europe, Asia and market-driven North America. Britain must with all speed and flexibility dismantle this failed British experiment. We must not be weighed down by an insistence on a one size fits all approach which implies that all countries want the same level of integration. The fact is that they dont and we shouldnt assert that they do. Scotland will likely remain a strong member of the EU whereas quite possibly rUK may choose separation from it. Some will claim that this offends a central tenet of Britains founding annexation of Scotland. I say it merely reflects the reality of Britain today. 4 members are part of Britain, but only 1,England, has the overwhelming control & power. 26 European countries are members of Schengen including four outside the European Union Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland. With the dismantling of Britain 3 EU countries rUK, Scotland and Ireland will retained their border controls.

Some members, like Scotland and Wales, are ready, willing and able to take action in legal action around the world. Others are comfortable with the use of military force for illegal wars Lets dismiss that warmongering, instead of minting more cannon fodder & slaughter. Lets stop all this talk of High Speed Rail in Britain, British Olympics or British overpopulation and consign the whole weary propaganda to a permanent siding and admit they are taking about England not Britain. Instead, lets start from this proposition: we are a family of democratic nations, all members of one European Union, whose essential foundation is the single market rather than the single currency. Those of us outside the euro recognise that those in it are likely to need to make some big institutional changes. By the same token, the members of the Eurozone should accept that we, and indeed all Member States, will have changes that we need to safeguard our interests and strengthen democratic legitimacy. And we should be able to make these changes too. Calman confirmed that picking and choosing the powers, which the Scottish nation needs will unravel the British Union, and I say not before time.

And we are not far from unravelling the British Union, this will in fact free its constituent nations to be better neighbours because such flexible, willing cooperation is a much stronger glue than compulsion from the centre.

Let me make a further heretical proposition, at least heretical from a Unionist perspective. The imposed Act of Union commits the Scotland to be ever ruled by London. This has been consistently interpreted that London owns Scotland & its people and her institutions compounded by a Supreme Court has consistently supported greater centralisation. We dont understand nor respect the right of others to rule our land. For Scotland and for any other nation on the planet - it is not an acceptable objective. And we would be much more comfortable if the Act of Union is ripped to shreds thereby freeing those who want to go further, faster, to do so, without being held back by the others. So to those who say we have no vision for Britain. I say we have. We believe in consigning the British experiment to the history books and free the founding member states who share treaties and institutions and pursue together the ideal of co-operation. To represent and promote the values of European civilisation in the world. To advance our shared interests by using our collective power to open markets. And to build a strong economic base across the whole of Europe. And we believe in our nations working together to protect the security and diversity of our energy supplies, although it is not clear what energy supplies rUK will have, but we will be willing to sell our surplus at market prices to a needy neighbor. To tackle climate change and global poverty. To work together against terrorism and organised crime especially Glasgow Labour. And to continue to welcome new countries into the EU especially Catalonia, Basque Country and Flanders. This vision of flexibility and co-operation is not the same as those who like Scottish Labour who want ever more London Rule but it is just plain common sense. My third principle is that all power must flow back to Scotland, never away from her. These powers were never willingly given by the Scottish people rather the Act of Union was little more than a hostile takeover. It was put in the Act of Union that Scotland would be an equal nation. But the promise has never been fulfilled. We need full independence to properly be an equal nation again. So let us use this moment, as the Scottish First Minister has constantly suggested, to examine thoroughly what Scotland as a whole should do and should stop doing. In Scotland we have already launched our balance of competences review to give us an informed and objective analysis of where Britain helps and where it hampers, much more hamper than help is the overwhelming conclusion. Let us be clear that greedy & corrupt London Rule requires everything to be centralized, to hanker after some unattainable and infinitely skewed playing field.

Countries are different. They make different choices. We should not centralize anything in London. For example, it is neither right nor necessary to claim that London Rule requires the pensions & services of Scottish NHS (devolved dont you know) be mandated by England only policies driven by the view of increasingly right wing British parliamentarians that privatization & the end to Univeralism is mandatory for Capitalism to get more obese with power. Even I was surprised when the leader of Scottish Labour, Johann Lamont (aka ToryPosterGirl) embraced these polices of London Rule. In the same way we need to examine how to get the right balance in so many areas where London Rule has damaged our nation including illegal wars, WMDs next to our main population, vast estates of poverty & hopelessness, which are generally on the doorsteps of Ermined Scottish Labour comrades who have been rewarded for their unflinching imposition of London Rule. Nothing should be off the table except for the Act of Union, which needs to come off immediately. My fourth principle is democratic accountability: we need to have a bigger and more significant role for national parliaments. There is not, in my view, a single European demos. It is national parliaments, which are, and will remain, the true source of real democratic legitimacy and accountability in the EU. Dismantling Britain will remove one of the most undemocratic parliamentary systems in the world, from the unelected House of Lords to the England dominated House of Commons, and will result in real & fully democratic national parliaments in Scotland and rUK which will look after the interests & aspirations of their own people. It is to the Scottish Parliament that a Scottish Prime Minster has to answer. It is through the rUK Parliament that Boris Johnston or Johann Lamont has to pass his/her Governments austerity measures. It is to the Scottish Parliament that I must account on the EU budget negotiations, or on the safeguarding of our place in the single market. Those are the Parliaments, which instil proper respect into national leaders, unlike the current British one ,which operates primarily on fear. We need to recognise that in the way the Britain does business the South East of England is always the top priority. My fifth principle is fairness: whatever new arrangements are enacted for the Eurozone, they must work fairly for those inside it and out. That will be of particular importance to Scotland. As I have said, we will not join the single currency. But there is no overwhelming economic reason why the single currency and the single market should share the same boundary, any more than the single market and Schengen. Our participation in the single market, and our ability to help set its rules is the principal reason for our membership of the EU.

So it is a vital interest for us to protect the integrity and fairness of the single market for all its members. And that is why Scotland has been so concerned to promote and defend the single market as the Eurozone crisis rewrites the rules on fiscal coordination and banking union. These five principles provide what, I believe, is the right approach to explain why the Act of Union must be dismantled. So now let me turn to what this means for Scotland. Today, public disillusionment with London Rule is at an all time high. There are several reasons for this. People feel that London Rule is heading in a direction that they never voted for. They resent the interference in our national life by what they see as unnecessary rules and regulation. And they wonder what the point of it all is. Put simply, many ask why cant we just have what we voted for isnt that democracy? They are angered by some legal judgements made in England that impact on life in Scotland. Some of this antipathy about Britain in general really relates of course to the Supreme Court, in addition to oppressive London Rule. And Scotland is leading efforts to address this via Independence of our ancient nation. There is, indeed, much more that needs to be done on this front. But people also feel that Britain is now heading for a level of London Rule that is far outside Scotlands comfort zone. They see Act after Act changing the balance between the nations, which form Britain. And note they were never given a say. Theyve had referendums promised - but rarely delivered or in the case of 1979 Scottish Labour overturned a democratic Yes vote of the Scottish people to ensure London Rule continued unhindered. They see what has happened to North Sea Oil in subsidizing the South East of England. And they note that many of our political and business leaders, especially Scottish Labour, conspired via the McCrone report to deceive the Scottish people for decades. And they havent noticed many expressions of contrition. And they look at the steps the Britain is taking and wonder what deeper oil drilling in the North Sea will mean for a country which is the only one to have got poorer after discovering oil. The result is that democratic consent for Britain in Scotland is now wafer thin. Some people say that to point this out is irresponsible, creates uncertainty for business and puts a question mark over Scotlands place in the European Union. But this is just the latest British scaremongering, which has gone on for centuries to keep the Scots under London Rule.

In fact, quite the reverse. Those who refuse to contemplate consulting the Scottish people, will in my view ensure our exit from this suffocating Union. Simply asking the Scottish people to carry on accepting London Rule over which they have had little choice is a path to ensuring that when the question is finally put and at some stage it will have to be (Autumn 2014 to be precise) it is pretty much certain the Scottish people will reject London Rule. That is why I am in favour of a referendum. I believe in confronting this issue shaping it, leading the debate. Not simply hoping a difficult situation will go away. Some argue that the solution is therefore to hold a straight in-out referendum now. I understand the impatience of wanting to make that choice immediately. But I dont believe that to make a decision at this moment is the right way forward, either for Scotland or for rUK as a remainder. A vote today between the status quo and leaving would be an entirely false choice, since clearly nobody wants the status quo. Now - while Britain is in double dip recession, and when we dont know what the future holds and whether rUK will emerge from this crisis is not the right time to make such a momentous decision about the future of our countries. It is wrong to ask people whether to stay or go before we have had a chance to put the relationship right. Yes Im talking of Devo Max, which is an option the Scottish people want to consider, but London Rule will not allow. We can sensibly answer the question in or out with the most basic question: what is it exactly that we are choosing to be in or out of? The end of London Rule of course The British Union that was decimated by the economic crisis is going to be a body put to rest, RIP. The constituent nations will be transformed undoubtedly beyond recognition by being freed from a decaying has-been empire. We dont need much time for this to happen and help to shape the future of the Scottish nation, so that when the choice comes it will be a real one based on truths & facts rather than scaremongering. No real choice is been given as London Rule has denied Scottish people the choice of DevoMax, leaving the stark choice between freedom for our nation or continued & ever more repressive London Rule which ironically respects no rules but its own & provides no protection or safeguards for the most vulnerable of our people. A choice between Independence of our nation or jam tomorrow falls in the category of fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. The Scottish people are not fools.

Independence will ensure the democratic legitimacy and accountability of the Scottish Parliament, which will combine in flexible cooperation as an equal with other Member States of the EU. In other words, self-determination, which would be entirely in keeping with the mission for a democratic European Union I have described today. More flexible, more adaptable, more open - fit for the challenges of the modern age. And to those who say Independence cant be negotiated, I would say listen to the views the many other recently independent European countries who easily & quickly negotiated the freedom of their nations. And look too at what we have achieved already as an equal successor state. Ending Scotland & rUKs obligation to bail-out Eurozone members. Keeping Scotland & rUK out of the fiscal compact. Launching a process to return some existing justice and home affairs powers unlike Britain, which secured protection for City of London Banking while destroying Scottish fishing. So we are starting to shape the reforms we need now. All that is needed to dissolve the Act of Union.. But I disagree with what President Barroso as he tends to talk utter tosh. In the next few years the EU will embrace Scotland as new member which will entrench the diverse, competitive, democratically accountable Scotland that we seek. I believe the best way to do this will be to rip the Act of Union asunder so I add my voice to those who are already calling for this. My strong preference is to enact these changes for the benefit of rUK, not just for Scotland. But if there is appetite for a new Act of Union we will let former Unionists have their own referendum after Independence, although they should be warned than no other nation once freed from British clutches has ever wanted to resubmit itself to London Rule. The SNP Manifesto in 2011 asked for a mandate from the Scottish people for the Scottish Government to negotiate Independence for our nation, and what an overwhelming mandate we got. It will be a relationship with Scottish interests first & foremost at its heart. And when we have negotiated our Independence, we will be fine with the rUK having whatever referendums they want even if it involves rUK choosing separation over cooperation with the EU. It will be the first opportunity in 300+ years that Scots will be able to vote on the Independence of our own nation. Legislation will be drafted before the 2014 Referendum by the Scottish Government with no interference from London. And we will complete this negotiation and hold this referendum within the second half of this parliament as stated many times before. It is time for the Scottish people to have their say. It is time for Scottish Independence from London Rule.

I say to the Scottish people: this will be your decision. And when that choice comes, you will have an important choice to make about our countrys destiny. Kind of a shame England is not allowed a choice on theirs, but thats British democracy for you. I understand the appeal of going it alone, of charting our own course. But it will be a decision we will have to take with cool heads. British politicians as promised many times for a positive campaign, but never delivered, need to stop their scaremongering & lies and let the Scottish people make a decision based on truth & facts. Of course Scotland will make her own way in the world, outside of London Rule, the only question is why has it taken us so long? But the question we will have to ask ourselves is this: is that the very best future for our country? Duh, Yes! We will have to weigh carefully where our true national interest lies. Alone, we would be free to take our own decisions, just as we would be freed of our solemn obligation to defend our allies if we left NATO. But we dont leave NATO because it is in our national interest to stay and benefit from its collective defence guarantee, although some would reasonably argue that is utter nonsense. We have more power and influence whether implementing sanctions against warmongering nations like Britain, or promoting democracy in Catalonia if we can act together. When we leave Britain, we cannot of course leave Europe. It will remain for many years our biggest market, and forever our geographical neighbourhood. We are tied by a complex web of legal commitments. Hundreds of thousands of Scottish people now take for granted their right to work, live or retire in any other EU country. When we pull out of Britain, decisions made in the EU would continue to have a profound effect on our country. But we would now have our own voice in those decisions with Scottish MEPs representing Scottish interests first & foremost. We would need to weigh up very carefully the consequences of no longer being inside the EU and its single market, as a full member, especially having fought for so long for Scotland to become a full member in her own right. Continued access to the Single Market is vital for Scottish businesses and Scottish jobs. Scotland especially with North Sea Oil and Renewables has been a prime destination for inward investments from Europe, this despite British scaremongering to try and deter investment. And being part of the Single Market has been key to that success.

There will be plenty of time to test all the arguments thoroughly, in favour and against the arrangement we negotiate. It would be patently undemocratic to demand to Bring it On immediately which would deny the Scottish people proper due diligence to understand the true potential of our nation, but some like Scottish Labour & their Scottish Tory allies call for exactly that as they try to silence & demean debate. There are some who suggest we could turn ourselves into Norway or Switzerland with access to the single market but outside the EU. But would that really be in our best interests? Probably yes, and definitely a good opinion to be considered. I admire those countries and they are friends of ours and they are very similar to us. Norway like Scotland sits on one of biggest energy reserves in Europe, and has a sovereign wealth fund of over 500 billion euros whereas British theft of Scotlands Oil reserves have ensured we have no sovereign wealth fund whatsoever. And while Norway is part of the single market and pays for the principle from just the interest from its massive sovereign wealth fund - it has no need to meddle in EU bureaucracy since its people are continually voted as living in one of the most blessed, happy & fair nations on the planet. The Swiss have one of the most successful economies in Europe clearly demonstrating how smaller & more nimble nations can succeed in a competitive world especially when they eschew warmongering activities like illegal wars and squandering billions on WMDS. The fact is that if you forced to be ruled by another nation, there are rules lots of them and none decided by your own people. You will never get what you want. But does mean we should leave Hell Yes! We would no longer pretend to be a world power begging at the top table of international affairs. There is no doubt that Britain has been little more than a poodle of Washington and has no respect for the formerly conquered nations like China & India which they abused for decades in the most horrific manners from the Opium wars in China where they deliberately forced millions in to drug addiction to India where they taxed & starved the people to enrich their capital. One of Scotlands first acts should be to apologize for the brutality of the British Empire. That matters for our Scottish conscience and frankly showing true respect for all nations as equals where none can act superior. It matters to our ability to get things done in the world. It matters to the United States and other friends around the world, which is why many if they were allowed would tell us very clearly that they will welcome Scotland as a free and equal nation. We should celebrate giving up the position as part of a cruel ex-empire which is now centered by the black heart of the City Of London whos only ambition is greed & power. When we leave the British Union, it would be a one-way ticket in line with every other nation who has left and prospered and like them it would not make any sense to waste money on a return ticket, which will never be used. So we will have time for a proper, reasoned debate. But only because the Scottish Government has insisted on this as being the minimum that the Scottish people deserve, despite demands from all the Scottish

Unionist parties to get it over and done with as if it is some bad smell to be wafted away. At the end of that debate you, the Scottish people, will decide. And I say to our European partners, frustrated as some of them no doubt are by Britains attitude: we will solve your British problem, Britain will be no more. Consider the extraordinary steps, which the Eurozone members are taking to keep the Euro together, steps which a year ago would have seemed impossible. It does not seem to me that the steps which would be needed to make Scotland - and others more comfortable in their relationship in the European Union are inherently so outlandish or unreasonable. And just as I believe that Scotland should want to remain in the EU so the EU should want us to stay. That said EFTA is definitely worth a wee gander. For an EU without Britain, without one of Europes dying powers, a country which is always full of its own self importance, and which brings real discourse to Europes influence on the world stage which plays by its own rules and which is a force for increasingly right wing capitalism would be a very different kind of European Union. And it is hard to argue that the EU would not be greatly improved by Britains departure. Let me finish today by saying this. I have no illusions about the scale of the task ahead. I know there will be those who say the vision I have outlined will be impossible to achieve, especially those like Scottish Labour who will lose the London Pig Troughs that sustain them. That there is no way our partners will co-operate. That the Scottish people have set themselves on a path to inevitable freedom. And that if we arent comfortable being in the Britain after 300 years, we never will be. And I applaud such an aspirational attitude for Scotland and for Europe. Because with courage and conviction I believe we can deliver a more flexible, adaptable and open Scotland in which the interests and ambitions of the Scottish people can be met. With courage and conviction I believe we can achieve a new settlement in which Scotland can be comfortable and all even rUK can thrive. And when the referendum comes next year, I will campaign for it with all my heart and soul. Because I believe something very deeply. That Scotlands national interest is best served in a flexible, adaptable and open European Union and that such a European Union is best with Scotland in it, and perhaps even better with rUK not in it.

Over the coming weeks, months and years, I will not rest until this debate is won. For the future of my country. For the success of the European Union. And for the prosperity of our peoples for generations to come.
