A Detailed Lesson Plan In Science and Technology III (Chemistry) I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Given the needed materials and appropriate teaching aids, the students are expected to: A. name simple salts and acid salts, B. give examples of simple salts and acid salts and their uses, and C. appreciate the importance of salt in our everyday living II. SUBJECT MATTER: A. Topic: Naming of Salts B. Science concepts: 1. In chemistry, salts are ionic compounds that result from the neutralization reaction of an acid and a base 2. There are several varieties salts. Salts that hydrolyze to produce hydroxide ions in water are basic salts or simple salts that hydrolyze to produce hydronium ions in water are acid salts. 3. Different salts can elicit all five basic tastes, salty, sweet, sour, bitter and umami or savory. 4. The name of a salt starts with the name of the cation followed by the name of anion. Correct! C. Motivation Today, before we proceed in our new lesson, I will group you first into six. The basis of your groupings is the color of your name tags. You May now find your group mates. You must stay in the area intended for your group.

Did you get me? You may now find your groupmate and go to the area assigned for your groups. Class, I prepared six different dishes for you to taste. But before that, please choose your groupleader and they will be the one to pick the strip of paper containing the name of the dish your group will taste. Then afterwards you are going to describe the taste of the said dish. The leader will report in front the descriptions made by your group. Is that clear class? Ok, so lets get started! Group leaders, come infront and pick your dish! (The teacher will give the respective dish to the different groups)

( The groupleaders pick their own dish.) I think, I gave you enough time to taste and describe the given dish. Now lets hear the report from the different groups. The descriptions of each member of the group about the food they ate. Let us give our self a round of applause for an activity is well done. It seems that all of you have the same description of their dishes. What is the common to the dishes? What is the taste common to them? So what do you think is the ingredients of your dish that is missing? Yes, lina? Very good!

If our foods do not have salt, what is their taste? Yes lina? Exactly! That signifies that salt is need in preparing our foods or most of our foods. Ofcourse not all foods require salt. D. Lesson Proper Salts are classified into three. They are simple salt, acid salt and complex salt. Class, for today we will focus our discussion with the first two classifications. The simple salt and acid salt. Lets start with the simple salt. How would you describe a simple salt? or what is a simple salt? Very good! (the teacher will explain further about simple salt. She will add the concept mention by the student/s.) Do you know how to name salts? How to name simple salt? What are the rules that we need to follow? In naming simple salts, we will use the rules in naming binary ionic compounds.

What are the simple salts in the samples I flashed? Lets check if your answers are correct. Lets have NaCl. At what group does Na belong? Very good!

Group 17 maam. How about Cl? Excellent! (the teacher will do the same with the remaining examples) Now, let us name the samples of simple salt you identified. Just like what I have told you while ago, the rules that we will follow are the rules in naming binary ionic compounds. Identify the name of the cation first . What is rule number 1? (using a sample the teacher explains rule number 1) What is rule number 2? (using a sample the teacher explains rule number 2) Combine the names of both cation and anion. What is rule number 3? (using a sample the teacher explains rule number 3) (the teacher gives seatwork and board works to the groups using flash card method) Congratulations group 1 for earning the highest score! Now, let us proceed to the acid salt or polyprotic salt. What is acid salt? Acid salt is compose of metal and polyatomic ions with the presence of hydrogen. Denoting the acidity of the polyatomic aions. Identify the name of anion. Then, attached the suffix ide

If you compare it to simple salt, it is made up of two ions, a cation and polyatomic ion. But hydrogen ion is present in the polyatomic ion. (the teacher shows sample of simple salt and acid salt.) Simple salt: MgCl2 Acid salt: NaHCO3 Identify the name of the cation first . How to name the acid salts? What are the rules we need to follow? What is rule number 1? (using a sample, the teacher explains rule number 1) What is rule number 2? Identify the name of polyatomic ion starting with the prefix bi or the word hydrogen followed by the name of polyatomic ion. Combine the names of both cation and polyatomic ion.
