Scenario 4: The Private Class Location: Osaka, Japan You work for a private language school in Japan and

a group of five Businessmen who work in the Sales department of a steel factory requested a course together. They need English for describing their products to foreign customers, negotiating contracts and prices, maintaining good customer relations, and socializing, as the latter is an important aspect of Japanese business culture. Three of the men are B1 however only one is comfortable speaking freely, one is a B2, and one is an A2 and struggles with learning the language. He is the oldest and the supervisor. You strongly suspect that the B2 learner acts as a translator for the rest during meetings. When you told your supervisor that they were mixed-level she apologized and told you that was the only way they were able to make the sale of 20 lessons as they insisted on learning together. They will meet at your language school once a week for 90 minutes. They are motivated to learn English and have good camaraderie but seem to be equally as interested in socializing with each other (in Japanese) as learning Business English. They are often very tired from a long days work. How would you approach this mixed-level course? What sort of material would you use?

Give an example of how you could develop tasks and source material to meet one needed function or skill.
